A Station Eight Fan Web Site
Do you know of any plans to realese Gargoyles episodes or seasons in box sets of DVDs? Y'know...limited editions...once there gone that's it and that's all. If not can you push Disneyfor that? Especially as a series creator...
I've had some preliminary talks with Disney about releasing a DVD. Last summer they said the first DVD would come out sometime in 2003. Other DVDs would only follow if the first one sold well. I had a brainstorming meeting with them in November (?). It was very exciting. They were talking about releasing the whole first season with a commentary track and an extra or two.
Since then, they've been on the quiet side. To be honest, I don't know what to make of that. Hopefully, we're still on track.
Before I get to the questions, I'd just like to say how much I enjoyed the show and how amazed I am to find that I'm not alone in wishing to see a return to that universe. Having said this...on with the questions!
First, is it possible to obtain recordings of some of the episodes, particularly "The Mirror"? On the subject of "The Mirror" I must say that I was somewhat disapointed that subplot (the sparks of romance) between Goliath and Elisa never reached the level of developement I was expecting (or did it?). I honestly thought Elisa made a very good gargoyle, and I always wondered if that might also have been addressed in some way. Thank you once again for everything!
1. The first season was released on video, though you'd probably have to haunt e-bay to find copies of those tapes. Otherwise, the only thing I can recommend at this point is to record the eps off Toon Disney.
2. Well, I think the subplot was advanced in episodes like "Sentinel" and "Hunter's Moon", among others. As for Elisa being a gargoyle, that was always temporary in my mind.
A friend and I were talking about how wonderful it would be if there were Gargoyles novels (sort of like the Star Trek ones) A whole series. I know you've said before that you would be interested in doing something like that but you need a publisher. I was wondering, since Disney owns the characters and they have lots of books made for different shows and movies, would it be possible to get a publisher through Disney? They must have some contacts. I remember they had some small novels about the pilot episode of gargoyles. They could always try one novel and see how it does. It seems like you have a great deal of ideas ready and it's such a shame that nothing is happening with them right now. ie. new episodes, novels etc.
It is a shame, isn't it?
To my knowledge, Disney has shown no interest in publishing any garg-related novels, either through their own company, Hyperion, or through another publishing concern. I no longer have any contacts there, however.
But for the record, I'd love to write one or more garg novels. I even have multiple plots in mind. I'm dying to do it.
I was just wondering what you thought of the Gathering 2001 Music CD.
Have you ever played Gargoyles on Sega Genesis?
No. I don't have Sega Genesis. And I rarely play video games. Poor hand-eye coordination, don't you know.
Hi, are you really planning to release Gargoyles on DVD? If you are planning to release Gargoyles on DVD, are you planning to sell all the episodes of Gargoyles on DVD in a 6 disc pack? (Or however many discs it takes to put 78 episodes on) It would be neat to have a collotor's edition of Gargoyles in one case with all the discs with the episodes in order. I would be great for any Gargoyle fan. I hope that comes true. That would be great! Thanks for reading!
It's not up to me. I'm hoping that eventually Disney decides to do some kind of DVD release. But that's there call, not mine.
During The Gathering 1999 Radio play, the Players were not able to keep they're scripts, but at this years Gathering a copy of that script was auctioned off (Which I was out bidded for). Is there a way to get a copy. (Preferable autographed)
Sounds like someone's bucking for a wedding present.
When is (or was) the big day?
1.Why didn't Kenner make any action figures of the characters that we saw in the World Tour? They might have made some money with Griff, Arthur, Nokkar, Cuchullain, Golem or Fara Maku figures so why didn't they?
2.Whose idea was it to have the World Tour?
1. They only wanted to make toys based on characters who appeared in a large percentage of episodes. And sometimes, not even then.
2. Mine, largely.
Are you going to be able to make any kind of art gallery in the near future? I love your work and would be interested to be able to purchase picutres from the gargoyle and Max Steel series. My 3 year old son loves the show too, btw.
That's great. But I'm not an artist. Can't draw worth a darn. (I said darn because your son is only three.)
This question really isn't about the series, but:
Do you know where I might be able to find the complete gargoyles series on video or DVD or anything?
I've been looking everywhere for some kind of an idea where I could find it, but with no luck. Thanks for any help you could give me.
Not really, no. Sorry.
Have you tried e-bay? Or asking in the s8 comment room?
Where can *I* buy a copy of Cree Summer's CD?
Everyone eat Round Table pizza!
Oh! And sign up for G2002!
And write to Disney asking for Gargoyles DVD's! (Greg, you can tell Mr. Fukuto that I'll by Gargs on DVD, and I don't have a DVD player.)
I love Cree's CD. Have you tried a record store?
Dear Me. Weisman,
You recently mentioned that the most pragmatic thing to do currently would be to petition Disney for a DVD release. Who and/or what departments at Disney would you suggest writing to? Thank you!
I'm not 100% sure, actually.
Buena Vista Home Video, perhaps.
Walt Disney Television Animation.
Good evening Mr. Wiesman.
I've seen how the vidio version of Awakening cuts a lot of scenes that were on T.V., but I've also noticed that there were a few things added. Such as, a few very short scenes, like Goliath saying "godspeed" to the trio when they went for the disk (although, they cut more of the latter convorsation, and I don't know if Goliath WOULD say godspeed), I think there were some more small extras to. Some of the sound effects were enhanced as well (for better and for worse). SO, to get to my question. Do you know if the videos for the first season were made differn't from the TV version? Anything differnt, form deleted scenes, to extra scenes, ro better sound, to anything new at all, that would make it worthwhile to purchase or rent? And I'm sorry for wasting you time if you don't have a clue.
I can't tell you whether it's "worthwhile". They are simply different. Two different teams did the editing and the sound effects with two VERY different purposes in mind.
The series version, is in my mind, the true version. Though I was on the team that did the post-production on what became the Video version (though it was not originally created for video, but for a 35mm big screen preview at Walt DisneyWorld).
There is also yet a third version done by a third team (and I don't even KNOW who these people were) that was done for the syndicated movie version.
All might be interesting to view in comparison to each other. I certainly have copies of both of the first two versions. But I can't judge for you whether it's interesting enough to be worth your money.
I am a very big fan of the show and I have almost all the episodes on tape, however the disney channel here in England have never shown the end of season 2 or any of season 3. I would greatly appreciate it if you could help me to get the remaining episodes I need I'll pay whatever price or go anywhere in the world for them. I have been searching for these episodes for years, any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Naresh Sookhoo (Gargoyles fan)
Hey, Naresh. Obviously, you didn't check out the Archives. I don't have any way of providing you with what you are missing.
But ask in the Station 8 Gargoyles Comment Room. Someone there may be able to help you.
My 4 year old son abosolutely loves Gargoyles. We can no longer get him to go to bed early. He has to stay up and watch Gargoyles at 10pm. He even acts out the opening as Goliath breaks out of his stone and growls. A pretty awesome sight when you get to see it. Anyhow, my question is: were there ever any action figures made and if so, would you know how my husband and I coulf get ahold of them? Thank you Susanne Chirco
Thanks for writing Susanne,
Yes, Kenner did make action figures. Finding them these days might be tough. Have you tried e-bay? Or one of the comment rooms?
1. In "Journey" you introduced John Castaway. Would he be involved in any way, in any of your spinoffs? The reason I ask is, I know he won't be alive in 2198. (Maybe his great grandson or some relative) But other than 2198 are you planning anything more with him?
2. Since I know you only worked on one episode of TGC, would you personally (should your spinoffs come back to TV) ignore what has taken place in the remaining episodes of the TGC seeing how you were not involved in their creation? Or were some of the TGC episodes ideas yours which you were planning before your contract ran out? I don't think some episodes can be completely ignored. However I hated that in TGC, they killed off the clones. What is your take on this?
3. By the way, since the Gathering 2001 is over, may I ask if there was any petitioning done to jumpstart Gargoyles and make it TV-borne again? If so, how'd it go?
2. I've answered this before too. My current thinking, which is not etched in stone, is to ignore what I don't consider canon. Enough time has passed and any new episodes would need to stand on their own two feet anyway. If anyone's confused about contradictions between TGC and the new stuff, they can check out the internet site that we will have to clarify all this stuff.
3. I didn't see any petitions. Feel like starting one? I'd focus on DVD's for now.
Incidentally, your post here should theoretically have been broken up into three posts, since your questions were on three separate topics. I haven't reminded people of that in a while. I ignored the rule breaking this time, but don't make a habit of it.
I would like to know if Gargoyles has been released on DVD; I loved the show when it first aired and I would love to be able to own the entire series. I'm a begin fan of Shakespeare and I enjoyed how you intergrated many of his characters into to the Gargoyles plot lines. I also enjoyed all the other cultural storys you used in your stories (ie. bushido, lockness, griffins). I hope one day you will be able to create new episodes. Good luck.
Thanks. At the moment the series is NOT available on DVD. But Jay Fukuto, Disney TV Animation's VP of Creative Affairs is checking into the possibility for us. (I'm glad someone asked him at the Gathering. Sounds a bit self-serving, coming from me.)
I need 2 gargoyles for my daughters production number at dance. Either to buy or rent. I need them by Monday the latest, 3-4 feet high each. Could you help me???
I'm not even reading this until July 2nd.
And we don't sell or rent gargoyles at this site. Goliath might take offense.
(I'm guessing this person will never read this response.)
Why was Gargoyles canceled off the air?
Will it ever be on ever again?
Can I do something about this situation?
Start by taking a look at the archives for a good answer.
At this point, I might suggest that the most pragmatic thing people could do is to petition Disney for a DVD release. Politely.
When will the episodes after "TURF" be shown on Toon Disney in England? I'm a die hard fan but I need more. I need to see the journey and so on because I love the Goliath/Elisa thing. Hit me back Hun. Thanks for a great show!
I don't have any idea, I'm afraid, when they schedule anything. I don't even get Toon Disney in my neighborhood.
Will the gargoyles series ever be available on DVD?
I hope so.
Just curious, but have you ever read the the stories in the Gargoyles Saga?
No. I don't read fanfiction as a policy to protect myself from law suits should I ever get the series back on the air.
I have been trying to find a cell of Goliath in the episode "Ill Met by Moonlight". It is when Goliath and Overon are in a baron place and Overon is throughing rocks at Goliath. Goliath askes Overon if Lady Titania wants the land to beat them or him. He responds with come on then. Goliath lets out a roar and smashes the rocks at his feet. As the dust clears Goliath is in a muscle pose with wings spread and eyes glowing white. This is the specific cell I am searching for. Please assist me with any info you have to help seek out this picture/cell. Thanks TBONE
Sorry, TBONE, but you obviously haven't even looked at the archives. If you had, you'd know I don't have a CLUE where you could find this or any other cell. I don't work in consumer products or retail. Good luck, though.
A refernce to the last question: in your Encyclopedia, would at least have a mention of TGC? It was there; was it, no is it worth a mention?
The Encyclopedia, as it is now written, is largely written within the Universe. It doesn't deal in detail with the behind the scenes stuff. There's no entry on Greg Weisman or Frank Paur, for example. Content covers "The Journey". But not the other twelve TGC episodes. There is a mention of TGC however.
I recently bought a copy of the book Total Hockey, verily a ponderous tome (A big book) if I ever saw one. It has stats on every team, stats for every play to ever play at least one game, records, trophy winners, coaches, Etc; and it is 2000+ pages to boot. (I guess this is why it is the "Official Encyclopedia of the NHL.) It also talks about fans of teams, defunct teams, Stanley Cup Winners, and lots more.
1) Would your Gargoyles Encyclopedia be like this? would it have a blurb on every character little and small to ever appear in the show? IE) The three or so Gargoyles left when Demona is named, or Harvey the Ninja?
2) Would it have stats like height, weight, weight in stone, Eye Color, favourite food?
3) Would the book have stats or trivia on gargoyle mating rituals, or hints about future shows?
4) could it have info on the fan support after the fact, like the gathering?
5) OR would this book only have current cannon on Items, Places and Characters in the 66 Ep's?
1. Harvey's definitely in there, but not every incidental character who ever appeared on screen. But every character named, yes.
4. The current draft does not. But it could.
5. Mostly the 66. Whether I went further would depend on what else was going on.
I see complete sets taped off TV by people selling on ebay regularly. It's pricey though.
I am extremely interested in finding out how I can purchase the entire series on videotape; from the very first episode aired to the very last.....do you know who I can contact to find this information out? Do I have to post my request to Disney themselves or is there someone else who may be able to answer my questions and fill my request? Is my request even possible? Thank you for any assistance you might be able to give me. If I was sure this request would be viewed by only you, I would include my e-mail address and ask you to e-mail your reply directly to me, but since it won't be, I will look for your reply in the questions answered archives. I am looking forward to seeing what you have to say.....and any future Gargoyles, or Gargoyles-related projects....again, thank you.
Rebecca, if you had taken a look at that archive before posting you'd have seen that I don't know anything about how you can get the tapes, nor do I respond personally to questions posted here. This space is not a merchandise clearinghouse. Sorry.
I do know that many fans have recorded the series.
And I know that the first season was once upon a time available on video. If that info is useful, great.
Hi, Greg, I first wanna say that I think you did a wonderful job with Gargoyles. The plots were wonderful for the whole family--not just kids. It's an educational experience for sure! So thank you for bringing it to life and sharing it with all of us. And my question is this--I looked in the archives, but couldn't find where someone has asked this, so I really hope I looked hard enough, but I was wondering where I could view an the original drafts of Goliath--for example, you said that Mr. Guurr(sp?) had made the basis for Goliath's form. Is there any way to see it? I'm very curious how Goliath originally was drawn, and how he evolved into the person we see now. Thanks so much, Mr. Weismann, and I hope I haven't annoyed you. Thanks! Tazz.
Not annoyed, but I don't have any of that old development art. Disney has it. Sorry. Maybe if you come to the Gathering in L.A., will try to give it all a holiday from the archives for a bit.
So the meeting between us and Kenner happened, most likely on June 30th, 1993. They brought this document to the table. It's very enlightening, I think, as to how a major toy company thinks. You'll notice that their "main concerns" didn't cause us to alter the show at all. Save for adding in a motorcycle and helicopter here and there. There were some things that they were concerned about that we were just able to reassure them about. That the Trio would not just be silly. That Xanatos would eventually get down and dirty with his own armor, etc.
My handwritten notes at the bottom were things we discussed at the meeting, also to help aleviate their concerns. "Franken-goyle" eventually became Coldstone. "X's Metal/Steel/Titanium Gargoyles" became the Steel Clan Robots. We were trying to show Kenner that we'd have some "male villain gargoyles" in addition to Demona.
MAIN STORY ELEMENTS
* Ageless goodness and loyalty vs. modern opportunism.
* Powerful myths.vs. powerful high tech "realities".
* Goliath vs. Demona.
* Goliath vs. Xavier.
* Goliath and his five ancient gargoyles.
* Elisa and her gargoyle team; especially Goliath.
* Xavier and Demona.
* Xavier and his subordinates.
* Huge, powerful, and ugly.
* Immortal by night; inert and powerless by day.
* Ancient, decent, loyal, and wise.
* Possesses leadership qualities.
* Visual power, strength of living gargoyles.
* Day vs. night power phases of protagonists.
* Humorous possibilities of gargoyle assimilation into contemporary New York.
* Traditional good vs. evil conflict.
* Severe visual contradiction of scary/ugliness as good (Goliath); deceptively normal is bad (Xavier, his gladiators, etc.)
* Limited number of heroic characters.
* Key human ally is female (Elisa).
* Key/only evil gargoyle is female (Demona).
* Industrialist as the evil adversary is very familiar and very difficult to translate into an exciting toy. A visually more powerful and more unique enemy would be preferable or increase his powers through armorment [sic].
* Lack of significant special hardware and vehicles for both good and evil.
* Described back story (especially enduring- love/hate relationship between Goliath and Demona) may be too complex for 5-year old boys.
* Four of the six gargoyles (Trio and Dog) appear less aggressive and silly than heroic.
* Breaking the Gargoyles kills them.
[My handwritten notes on the document follow:]
* Franken-goyle & Demona
* Pack / Xavier / Scarab Corp / Vehicles etc.
* X's Metal / Steel / Titanium Gargoyles
I saw a book on Disney once at the bookstore which included a little bit on "Gargoyles" and described it as being television's first animated drama. In your opinion, how accurate is that description? That it was Disney's first television animated drama, I certainly don't dispute, but I know that there are many people who would dispute the "first animated drama" designation for "Gargoyles" on the grounds of "Batman: TAS", for example. I was wondering what your own assessment of the statement might be.
I think there are many innacuracies in that little blurb. That's just one.
Where can I get a complete videotape collection from the Gargoyles episodes? Does it exist?
Best animated series ever!!!!
Thanks. And I don't know.
After seeing He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named's request for a short summary of "Deadly Force," I thought I'd pitch something to both of you, Greg and Gore, in light of all these types of requests: Post a link to the Gargoyles Fan Website somewhere in Ask Greg. It has, of course, every episode of the series, bulleted, synopsised, and reviewed.
What is the link?
Where can I find pictures of the middle age Gargoyles?
I don't know. Where?
just wondering about the Gargoyle videos for sale on the net
on the Amazon site ...
1)did you have anything to do with them?
2)do you know anything about them ..if so do all the videos
cover all the episodes(but squashed down of course)
also do you know if they are any good?
thanks - Jess
1. I'm not sure what's for sale, so I can't answer whether I had anything to do with them specifically. But if it's the videos that Disney released from the show's first season then, yes, I was a co-producer and supervising story editor of those episodes.
2. As far as I know, the only videos that Disney has released are a cut down version of the five part pilot. And four more videos that contain the eight remaining episodes of the first season. If that's what we're talking about, I think those shows are VERY good. (But of course, I'm biased.)
Great art! How about a stained glass pattern book of various gargoyles? No pattern book is available and people are looking for one! You probably already have the connections and definately have the reputation! If you have a pattern already, I'd love to put it into glass and let you use the photos/graphics. Let me know, please. Thanks, Kelly email@example.com
No personal e-mail responses. Sorry.
And I'm not sure what you mean by patterns? Model sheets?
And I think you overestimate my "connections and.. reputation".
Is there a way to obtain detailed pictures of castle wyvern. I have plans on building an actual castle and I would like to use the castle as a guide line for the designers. I would greatly appreatiate it. Its such a beautyful castle to have. If you want to e-mail me directly you can reach me at firstname.lastname@example.org
No direct e-mail responses. Sorry.
And I don't have that info anyway.
My advise: watch the show, do your best and fill in the rest using your imagination.
IS IT MY IMAGINATION or have I suddenly gotten a TON of requests for personal e-mail responses? Like a new common thread.
What is the Gargoyle's bible?
Where could I find it?
The "Gargoyles Bible" is a document I wrote before the production of scripts for the first season (and then revised before the production of scripts on the second season) as a guide for our writers (and whoever else was working on the series). Something to help them understand character, backstory, context, etc.
I know someone's got it posted on the web. And eventually, I'll get around to posting it here too.
Hi Greg. I never got to see any of the episodes of "Gargoyles: the Goliath Cronicles" because they wouldn't air it in my area. Do you know of any place where i could get the collection?
One quick question: will there ever be a Gargoyles video game? Or is there one already?
There was one. (Or two, depending on your definition.)
I just returned from a vacation in Disney Land. (Boy, was it crowded!) So I figured that I could find some Gargoyle merchandise there; those stores have everything Disney. I walked into one, then another...and another...and another...with no luck. Not a single piece of Gargoyles merchandise anywhere in the park!!!
In one store, I asked an employee, "Do you have any Gargoyles stuff?"
He replied, "I...don't know what you mean...I don't know what a Gargoyles is."
It's nice to know that Disney employees know so much about there company's works. (And they use good grammar, too!) I have searched everywhere for Garg stuff, without luck. Where can I find it? Why isn't there any to be found; especially in Disney Land?
I don't know. It's a source of much frustration to me, believe me.
dEAR gERG, 12/27/2000
Is their anyway I can by the series on tape? Look I can't help it I'm a nut for them?
The first season was released on video, but those tapes may be hard to find now.
You might ask around in the comment room.
You made mention im a previous answer to a Goliath walkaround character that could be found at DisneyWorld.
I have several questions regarding this:
1. Can the Goliath walkaround character still be found at
2. Are there any other walkaround gargoyles Characters to be
found at either DisneyWorld or DisneyLand?
3. If so, who are they?
Thanks for your time :)
1. Don't know.
2. Not that I'm aware of.
3. See above.
That's cool, "matt". You explained yourself to the key...
Greg, I think we all should give "matt" a standing ovation for his loyalty to the Gargoyles series. What do you think everybody, huh? :)
Announcement: If anyone is looking for the entire 78 episodes, there are those on eBay selling them. They come on 5 VHS tapes. I was loyal enough to the series to get all 78 for less than $50. Good quality too.
Uh, Jim, what's with the matt obsession?
Thanks for the info.
Just want to officially state that I have nothing to do with the sale of these tapes. (Greg protects his butt.)
Hey man, do you have any pictures of the clan in south america. the snake guy and his buddies? If so let me know. Thanks.
I don't, no. Have you tried one of the many sites dedicated to the show?
where do i find a gargoyle necklace??? i'm not to familar with "surfing" the web and i have had no luck. please, please reply to my e-mail address at irishluch7@aol cause i won't know how to get back to this site. thanks!
Sorry, but I don't reply to individual e-mail addresses. No time.
And at any rate, I don't have a clue how to find you a gargoyles necklass. This is not a clearinghouse for garg merchandise.
Would I get sued if I tried to make a Gargoyles computer game for PC and Mac? Or would that be only if I tried to sell it for profit? The game will have decent graphics, sprite animation, sounds, a story, (and possibly some video clips from the show), you know that sort of thing...
But I will be sure to provide credit to the "real" creators of Gargoyles.
Why hasn't anyone done this before, besides Sega Genesis?
I'm no lawyer, but obviously if you tried to sell it for profit, you'd definitely get a letter from the Mouse. And even if you didn't, but they noticed you and felt you were infringing on a profit center or potential profit center, you might hear from them.
But as I said, I'm no lawyer. I wouldn't presume to advise you.
As for your last question, I don't know.
Where can i find good gargoyle art
The GATHERING 2001 in Los Angeles. Check out:
can you send me a good picture of the eye of oden from gargoyles please??
send them to:
No. I'm not a clearing house. I answer questions here. I don't have stuff like that to send. Sorry.
Did you try asking in the comment room?
Are gargoyles still sold in stores, if so where?
Can you be more specific? I'm not sure exactly what you mean.
But never mind. I don't have any info on that kind of stuff anyway.
Would you happen to know if there is going to be a DVD edition of GARAGOYLES: THE HEROES AWAKEN. It would amaze me if there isn't since Disney has already put a lot of c**p on DVD that I couldn't believe they did.
Not that I know of at this time.
