How many seasons would you have planned for Gargoyles and its Spin-offs to realize your own vision?
1. Gargoyles
2. Bad Guys
3. Time Dancer
4. Dark Ages
5. Gargoyles 2198
6. Heroes of Ulster
7. New Olympians
8. Pendragon
1. As many as possible until the series caught up to Gargoyles 2198.
2. As many as possible until the premise resolved or the series caught up to Gargoyles 2198, whichever came first.
3. As many as possible until Brooklyn's journey catches up to his return with his family to Gargoyles.
4. As many as possible until we catch up to the Wyvern Massacre in Gargoyles.
5. As many as possible.
6. As many as possible until the premise is resolved or until the series caught up to Gargoyles 2198.

How would Magic change in 2198 and would it be more widespread in the future?
Magic doesn't change. Whether it would be more widespread is a spoiler.
Just learned about the proposed spin-offs after all these years, and I ask:
Dude?! Seriously, why was 2198 never picked up?
That spin-off would've been awesome. I'm truly upset Disney or any other company overlooked such an amazing idea.
No other company except Disney could have picked it up. And for a couple decades after Goliath Chronicles basically bombed, no one at Disney was interested in Gargoyles.
Hi greg i have two questions.
1.If you were to bring back Gargoyles on Disney plus, how many seasons would it have?
2. Would you also attempt to do Gargoyles Dark Ages and Gargoyles 2198,and have them on Disney plus if you ever get the chance?
1. How do I answer something so incredibly hypothetical? If it were up to me, it would never end. But that kind of thing is NEVER up to me.
2. Given the chance, I'd do all of it.
What kind of relationship would Samsom and Nick (that was the name of descendant of Goliath and Elisa's adopted child, wasn't it?) have in "Gargoyles 2198"?
Brotherly.
Why did the Space-Spawns kidnap the eggs of the Liberty clan? For what reasons did they want the eggs?
No Spoilers.
Topic: Phoenix Gate and time travel to the future
In regards to Gargoyles 2198, we know the Phoenix Gate cannot allow someone to change the past as it is part of the history, but how would the Phoenix Gate and time travel work if someone from the present were to go to the future?
During planning, were there problems with figuring out how Brooklyn's presence in 2198 would relate to his "historical self" (either "disappeared" when the Gate took him; the "historical Brooklyn" never time-travelled), or did you always have it in mind that time-travel to the future from the present was also immutable - Brooklyn factus erit iam illud (Brooklyn already shall have done that)?
P.S. I apologize in advance if my Latin is off.
1. Knowing no more about what happens next than one would being someone from the present IN the present, it's more of a non-issue. If someone from even FURTHER in the future showed up, then the M.I.A. scenario is in play.
2. If I'm understanding you right, the latter. Again, a non-issue, as I knew he was time-dancing, and one of his stops would be 2198.
Since Demona is still around as of the Gargoyles 2198 spinoff, that means MacBeth is still around as well. I know you won't discuss any actual plans for the character (SPOILERS!), but can you tell us if you had specific plans for him? Or did the outline for 2198 not get that far?
I have plans for everyone and everything.
Hi Greg. Hope you're well. I'm working through my to-read pile, but I have both Rain of Ghost novels on my desk waiting. I'm glad you decided to put books out. Xanatos, Macbeth, & Puck/Owen are my favorite characters from any medium, and I recently found out my dad loves the Star Wars Rebels series. He never watches cartoons. I haven't seen it yet, but he said he enjoys it because the characters were written really well. I wasn't surprised to hear that.
Had some more domestic, trivia-type question regarding Macbeth during his retirement from the world around 2198 & earlier (pre-Invasion). Couldn't find anything in the Archives.
1. How is Macbeth occupying his time by this point? Activities, interests, etc. I'm very interested in this sort of thing because I feel it adds dimensions to characters.
2. Secondly, was there something specific that caused him to want to withdraw from the world?
3. What was it, if you're willing to share?
Respect & Appreciation,
- Daniel

Gargoyle Culture & Biology
So, in most social species there is an evolved strategy that encourages gene diversification and limits inbreeding. In lions, for instance, the males leave the pride at maturity to take over a different pride and mate with the females of that group rather than stay and have only their sisters and aunts and female cousins to mate with. In bonobos, it is the females that often leave to join new groups and find unrelated males to mate with.
Now, obviously, in the Gargoyles Universe, up until very recently there was very little genetic exchange between the surviving far flung and isolated clans. But back in their heyday, when the nearest clan to your own was well known and could be reached, was there any sort of social strategy to encourage genetic diversity or has finding a mate among your own rookery siblings always been the norm?
And now that the clans are becoming more known to each other and able to move from clan to clan more easily, will this issue cause more inter-clan mating? Does the mixing of the 2198 rookery eggs have anything to do with this or is that just a symbolic gesture of the Gargoyle Nation?
Well, keep in mind that rookery siblings are almost by definition NOT biological siblings. But there's probably a lot of cousins in there.
There will definitely be more inter-clan mating in the modern age. And ganging the 2198 rookery eggs may have had a dual purpose.
But this is definitely a topic I'm open to discussing... say at the Gargoyles Biology and Culture panel at CONvergence this summer!
Hello Mr. Weisman,
You've shared some of the pitches for Gargoyles spin offs such as Dark Ages and 2198 without potentially spoiling anything if they ever get a shot at being made. Would you ever do the same with the bibles for Spectacular Spider-Man and Young Justice? That would make for fun reading, but if they contain anything you wouldn't want judged out of context it's understandable why not.
I'm not ruling out the possibility.
About 2198...
1)Have you already decided who'll be in the highest ranks of the Illuminati by that point?
2)Does Coyote X mean that he is the model 10.0?
3)Is Samson going to find Demona to join the Resistance, or the other way around?
4)Since we know that Arthur was supposed to wake up about two hundreds years after 1997, is there a chance that he'll somehow still be alive?
1. The 2198 Illuminati is not as well-thought out as the 1997 Illuminati, but I have the basics down.
2. Maybe…
3. SPOILER REQUEST.
4. SPOILER REQUEST.
I have a question about Gargoyles 2198, specifically Demona going into space with Nokkar, Zafiro, Guardian, and LXM-1057. I suppose this doesn't count as a spoiler request.
How would Puck's spell of transformation work when there is, effectively no sunrise and sunset?
How could it NOT count as a "SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT."?
In 2198 are the Wyrd Sisters still watching Demona and Macbeth?
Do you mean still in cooperation with the Archmage? No.
By the time of 2198, how famous are certain individual gargoyles? Was Samson's leader, who gets taken by the Space-Spawn a house hold name? Samson himself? Delilah? How about Demona... is she known to the general public?
I don't know about household names, but Samson's leader would have been known. Samson, not so much. Delilah even less. Demona... NO COMMENT.
I was reading through the archives, and I noticed that when 2198 was called Future Tense and then 2158, you described Demona as being repentant, and motivated by love and redemption. When the 2198 contest ended, she seems to be described as a lot closer to the Demona we currently know. Still plotting against humanity, perhaps her final chance to destroy the human race. Not getting along with anyone initially.
I remember that you were toying with the idea of Samson being older, more statesmanlike and a widower until you revamped 2158 into 2198. So, did Demona also undergo a revamp?
Eh... Not so much. She was always someone out of the mainstream. I'll admit that my memory of the 2158 days are sketchy, but I think a more likely interpretation is that until I really sat down to DEVELOP 2198 in detail, I just hadn't focused on where Demona was.
The Gargoyles had very moody and powerful orchestral score, fitting very well into dark athmossphere which show embodied. Batman: The Animated Series had similar alike score(aside sharing some of its, writers/co-workers working on both of the shows).
However, Batman Beyond, although following in same timeline as Batman, taking place in dark future, had much more techno-metal soundtrack. Some themes similar to those heard in previous serie,s were also sometimes used, although in different instruments. Although liking of this change had been little bit mixed among fandom, i personally enjoyed this change, giving refreshing and differencing mood from it predecessor.
Somehow, i always envisioned that Gargoyles 2198, if ever reached to level of becoming animated series, would use similar kind of musical change: after all, in this spinf-off technology had expaned even beyond what we had seen in original Gargoyles, and we,ve would be seeing, thanks to Space-Spawn, alot in and out in our solar system: somehow i personally hear music like Static-x or Matrix soundtrack when thinking what this new enviroment would look like.
Do you think score would remain similar to Gargoyles, or would its future spin-off take futuristic change in not just visual but also sound?
I do understand that you dont usually like hypotethical questions, and i also try to avoid them, but this simply has been rolling in my head alot...
Score-wise, I don't think we shared any personnel with Batman: The Animated Series. Carl Johnson was the Gargoyles composer. Shirley Walker did Batman with a number of composers, but I don't think Carl was one of them, though I might be wrong.
I'm sure we'd incorporate certain Gargoyles themes, while striking out in a new direction, but I'm not interested in defining that direction now in any way.
how would a gargoyle survive in space?
In 2198 how is demona and zafiro going to survive in space with there special non-stone sleep circumstances? (i.e. demonas spell, zafiros amulet)
I'm not revealing that at this time.
This discussion has been had in Station Eight a few times, and I thought I would bring it up here. It seems to me like one could make a case that Demona is the lead character in the greater story of the GARGOYLES UNIVERSE.
If one looks at "Dark Ages," "Gargoyles," and "Gargoyles 2198" as a three act story, Demona's story is the one story arc that really plays out through the entire timeline. She is there for all three acts.
Yes, Goliath is the lead in "Gargoyles" and Samson is the lead in "Gargoyles 2198." I think Hudson is the lead in "Dark Ages," but I might be wrong. And they all play huge roles, crucial roles. But Goliath and Hudson are not in Act Three, and Samson is not in the first two acts.
Demona, without being the lead in any of the acts, is the constant presence. Sure, she may not appear in "Pendragon," "New Olympians," Heroes of Ulster," and may only have a small role in "TimeDancer" and "Bad Guys." But if "Gargoyles" is the center of the universe here, and "Dark Ages" and "2198" are both acts in that story, it almost makes me wonder if this is really her story. You've got her youth, her fall from grace, her time as the main antagonist (or one of them), and then her eventual redemption.
Not to take anything away from Goliath, because I definitely agree that "Gargoyles" is his story and that he is the most pivotal character in that series. But is his story a large piece of her story?
I'm not saying it's all about her, because it's not. I don't think that or feel that, because this is all one huge ensemble piece made up of many stories, but like I said, she seems to be the most constant character out of all of them in the Big Picture. And all without ever being THE LEAD in any of the "three acts."
It's definitely an interesting theory.
Of course, I don't actually view the Gargoyles' Universe as any one character's story, including Goliath. To me it's a tapestry with many threads...
But I'm not disagreeing per se.
In the 2198 spinoff, will the people in Avalon get involved in the fight at all? They are clearly at risk to, since the aliens have the potential to destroy earth, and Avalon along with it.
Hello Greg,
First of all, I want to thank you for the...wonderful series that you've gaven EVERYONE that has watched it.
In Gargoyles 2198 or 2158, what ever. Are those going to be...in a series? I would love for that to happen. Or is it a comic book series?
It's whatever I can convince someone to do.
Hullo, just wanted to say first of all that I enjoyed Clan Building and Bad Guys immensely, and I hope that someday we get to see more Gargoyles stories being told.
Anyway, I have a question that I suppose loosely connects to the 2198 spin-off (I'm not sure if this has already been asked; I couldn't find it on the archives). What would happen to a gargoyle if they were ever up in space? Since technically there's no day or night in space, how would that affect them?
Thanks in advance, and wishing you all the best with your future projects.
It's a good question, one which I plan to explore.
Does Brooklyn meet Katana before or after his adventures in the future with Samson and the resistance?
Both.
What is the future for Gargoyles?
2198.
It's me again. If you are planning to continue the saga of Gargoyles, would we be able to see the Space Spawn and see what is going to happen in the future?
Eventually.
which color is Samson
You'll have to wait and see.
Any chance of a big tell all double page splash in the next Gargoyle graphic novel showing us 2198, Artus, Gwenyvere etc? Giving us some hints about that series, Demona's future loves etc?
No.
Why would I do that?
In Gargoyles 2158, you said Deliah will be uncomfortable about having human genes from Elisa. How will she even know she has this since Gargoyles are raised communally?
It's Gargoyles 2198 now. You might check that archive. Beyond that, I'm not going into any details about Delilah at this time.
I have a question regarding Gargoyles 2198. You mentioned that the Delilah from that time period would know that she is descended from the Delilah of 1996. Since Gargoyles raise all the hatchlings as children of the Clan, how would she know? Wouldn't the generation gap be far enough that the members of the Labrynth clan would not care or even know?
You'd think.
Is there a squel for gargoyles or not? What is gargoyles 2198? I cant tell by the FAQ weather 2198 is just talking about an episode or a squel idea.
Gargoyles 2198 was an idea for a spin-off series. CBS was, at one time, interested in airing an earlier version of it. But then Disney bought ABC, so it never happened.

Hi Greg, I'm glad the forum's back up because I have a question that's been nagging me. On the GARGOYLES 2198 CONTEST RESULTS Ramble, you said that, because Delilah II is part human, she feels "like she's not truly a part of either (species). Upon learning of her "heritage", humans seem to react with fear and even disgust. And Delilah has never been confident that the gargoyles she was raised with don't feel the same way." If Gargoyles raise their children without knowledge of biological parents, Delilah shouldn't know she's part human, as it would require her to know she's a biological descendent of the first Delilah. If gargoyles raise their children collectively, how does Delilah know she's part human. Does the Labyrinth Clan have different customs, having been originally led by Talon, a mutate that was once human and thus having founded the Clan on human customs? Or does Delilah notice qualities about herself that are human qualities and subsequently realize she's part human?
I'm mostly inclined to leave this to your imagination for now, but suffice to say the Labyrinth gargoyles are aware of their history and origins, making some things obvious -- independent of immediate bio-parentage.
This question is in regards to the LXM Robots. How closely will they resemble Lexington? Will they resemble him to the extent that Coldfire resembles Desdemona, or to the extent that the original Coyote resembled Xanatos? If they do resemble him closely, could a timedancing Brooklyn accidentally confuse one with Lex? If they do look a lot like Lex it has occurred to me that something like that might happen. I've noticed in the wiki it says they will be five feet tall, but I have no idea what Lex's height will be when he fully matures or how tall he is if he stands up straight, so I don't know if that means they will be a lot bigger than him or about the same size. Thanks for giving any info you can!
They look like metal Lexington's -- kinda like chrome Lexington's. Brooklyn couldn't confuse one for Lex himself, though he couldn't help noticing the resemblence. They sound like Lex too.
hello greg,
im a huge fan of your show hope you make new episodes anyways ive been reading on the gargoyles wikipedia that goliath will die by 2198 and his descendant will be samson
any info on who he is cuz ive never heard of him
Check out the Gargoyles 2198 archives. C'mon, gang, please check the archives -- or at least the FAQ -- before asking questions.
Would their have been any hatchling for the Avalon Clan by 2198? I did the math and if the eggs stayed on their island their would eight or so unhatched rookeries and all of the current Avalon gargs would still be in their prime.
I've done the math too. Eggs from Avalon were brought to Queen Florence Island.
Is Nick Maza (in 2198) blood related to Nick/Natsilane from the episode "Heritage"?
If so, when or at what point in the ancestry of Nick Maza do the bloodlines of the Maza family and Nick/Natsilane meet? If you won't say when specifically then is it closer to the year 2198 or 1998?
1. Yes.
2. I'm not answering this at this time.
By the time of Gargoyles 2198, what will Demona and Macbeth's relationship be? By that I mean: Will they still hate eachothers guts, or will their relationship be more aimiable in nature?
I'm not revealing this at this time.
Do you have how the gargoyle population of the present day makes it the point it reaches in March 2198 roughly mapped out?
Roughly, yes.
We seen that Demona has a great deal of affection for her child, Angela. Since Samson is a descendant of hers, won't that affect how she feels about him? Or will his similarities affect her normal affection for her kin?
We'll have to wait and see.
The two LXM robots in Gargoyles 2198 are called LXM-994 and LXM-1057. These are the dates of the two massacres. Who named the robots, and why did they choose those names?
I named the robots, and I chose the numbers for resonance.
Ohhhhh... you mean who named the robots in the SHOW? ;)
They are factory standard. No one "named" them.
Is Macbeth still wealthy by 2198?
Is Demona still wealthy by 2198?
I'm not revealing this information at this time.
You've said that Macbeth doesn't get involved after the Space Spawn invade Earth in 2198, until some time later. Why? Surely he wouldn't just ignore his planet being taken over. He fought in WWII. Why would he stay out of this far more important war?
I'm not revealing this at this time.
For your Gargoyles Future Spinoff, was the idea of Brooklyn travelling into the future to help against the alien invaders from the old Superboy and Supergirl comics where they travel into the future and join the Legion of Super Heroes?
I can't deny that as a possible influence -- since of course I'm familiar with the Legion -- but I wasn't specifically thinking of that. The TimeDancer idea came to me before I thought to include Brooklyn in the cast of what eventually became Gargoyles 2198. It just seemed to make sense that if Brook was bouncing around, that one of the eras he'd bounce to is 2198.
If Samson is Goliath's great grandson in Gargoyles 2198 wouldn't Samson look more like Broadway since males look like their dad?
Samson isn't Broadway's son. And look, we never wanted to be rigid about it anyway. One inherits from all of one's ancestors.
Hi Greg,
Ok, this might be a bit off topic (YAY) but first I want to say a BIG. HUGHE. GIANT. Thanks to Disney for releasing season 1 on DVD!!! I'll try to get my hands at it here in Europe and just hope I can help bring the series back on screen!!! And I hope Season 2 will follow soon...
Now the question:
You often stated the large number of spinn offs occuring even after the Gargoyles-timeline (meaning Timedancer, 21** etc.). Well, that would mean that eventually, Gargoyles would have a spot where it would end in time. Wich year would this be? Around 2030?
Thank you for awnsering and for pushing so much time in all that stuff (just SOOOO excited on the DVD finally REALLY comming out!!)
CU,
J.
J,
I'm glad you're excited.
But as to your question, I'm not sure I follow your reasoning. I guess if you're asking: "Is there a point in time when the original "GARGOYLES" series would end?" I guess my answer is, "Yes, in March 2198." At which point, we'd change the name to "Gargoyles 2198" and the spin-off would become the series.
More Lex-related questions:
1) Will Lex be lucky enough to find the love of his life on his first try (I'm not counting what happened in "Turf"). In other words, do you see him going on multiple dates or having many relationships before finally finding "the one"? I know that gargoyles mate for life, but since his significant other may be of a different race, I don't know if it will still be the case.
2) You've said the LXM robots are all chrome-colored and "all but indistinguishable from each other" before the Master Matrix is stolen. Don't you think it might be difficult for the audience to distinguish LXM-994 and LXM-1057 from one another? I understand that once they begin having separate experiences, separate personalities will emerge, but visually, it might still be hard to tell them apart, especially at the beginning of the series when the two teams are still together. Do you have plans for some other way to distinguish the two (some obvious mark or voice difference or such)?
1. I'm not answering this. I've given too much away already.
2. The possibility for confusion interests me. There are ways to distinguish, but at least initially they won't be immediately obvious.
Oh, and technically these are two unrelated topics. (The fact that LXM looks like Lex doesn't actually help.) I'm only letting it slide because I'm NOT answering the first question.
B.Gargoyles 2198
1.
Will Samson search for his allies (Demona, Macbeth, Noka, etc.) or will they come to him?
2.
a)Will his biological siblings join the fight?
b)Or gargoyles from Avalon?
3.
You wrote that there are actually many races fighting against the Space Spawn, are they losing(or simply have problems), because the Space Spawn.
a)is the physically superior race in the war compared with the other races like most gargoyles are to humans?
b)has the better technology? (like the Vorlons and Shadows in B5 to the other races)
c)increases faster in number and thus a bigger population overall? (Like the Invid in Robotech)
d)are masters of war? (Like the Klingons in TNG who are just good at it)
e)are simple crueller and without mercy? (Like theYuuzhan Vong in the Expanded Star Wars Universe)
4.
What are the goals of the Space Spawn? I mean okay the want to win the war, but what want they do if they win?
a)Kill all other races?(Like the Yuuzhan Vong)
b)Making them to slaves like the Centauri from B5 to the Narn and the Cardassians from Ds9 to the Bajorans?
c)Making them to dependent colonies(under direct or indirect controle) like the Dominion from DS9?
5.
a)Are there still governments on earth?
If yes are they:
a)Relative indipendent if they don't oppose the Space Spawn's rule.
b)Directly controled by the Space Spawn(by a representative perhaps)?
c)Ignored?
1. Some of each.
2a. One way or another.
2b. One way or another.
3. They're winning. That's all I'm in the mood to reveal.
4. Mostly to expand territory.
5a. Yes.
5abc. Think Vichy.
Sorry for the last post.
1.a)You wrote Samson would be the leader of the resistance fighting the Space Spawn, wouldn't Demona be repugant to follow the orders by someone who is such young.
b)Wouldn't be the other gargoyles.
2.You wrote she would have an alliance with Manhattan clan of this time, means this she simple don't attacks them or has she helped them sometimes?
3.Did she have at any time between 1996 and 2198 any friends amongst the Manhattan clan besides her daughter?
4.Has Demona had much contact to Samson(or her other descendants?) when he was young so that they know each other at last a bit?
5.How is her relationship to her sister Coldfire, or to Coldstone at this time?
1a. Demona comes in later. She is in fact reluctant to take orders. Isn't that fun?
1b. Samson is Second-In-Command, when his leader is abducted. I'm not saying there's no resistance, but it's the system they are accustomed to.
2. Who? Demona? I wrote that? Do you mean after the attack?
3. I'm not answering that.
4. They are aware of each other.
5. I'm not answering that.
Greg:
Who's Nicholas Natsilane Maza?
The Decendant of a member of the Mazas' and Natsilane (From Heritage)?
I saw this on the Gargoyles Encyclopedia.
Not my Gargoyles Encyclopedia. I assume you mean some website.
Anyway, I think the name kind of speaks for itself, and beyond that I don't feel like revealing many more details than those already available by checking out the GARGOYLES 2198 archive here at ASK GREG.
