We're back! Here's Thailog's Birthday: Part II. Don't click if you haven't read the comics, as there are minor spoilers!

Drawn/inked by yours truly and colored by Byrdie Fae. Enjoy!

Sanchez and Choi as Quarrymen? I'd never imagined that possibility before, but it could work. I'm looking forward to seeing how much of the "ordinary citizen" element will remain in the comic (I don't think that it'll degenerate into the "nothing but professional henchmen" mode as rapidly as it did in the Goliath Chronicles).

Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

KC: The point is, they devoted an entire episode to someone who was only mentioned by name for a brief second in two previous episodes. I'm not saying that Rosario and Peter will become pivotal characters, but I wouldn't completely write out them making some sort of appearance. Greg has already proven that he hasn't lost his knack for surprising us.

Yeah.

He showed up for only one episode.

KC: yeah, both Hudson and Broadway were reading about them from the newspaper and Elisa finished their sentence, "because it was the right thing to do."

Which IS a broad enough statement to make them surprise Quarrymen an actual possibility. I definitely wouldn't rule them out.

GregX: "Avalon, Part II" I LOVE it, but yes, that episode isn't for lightweights. Even longtime fans still end up confused!

Matt> "I can't help wonder if we'll eventually see Peter Choy and Rosaria Sanchez."

It's a possibility, but I doubt it.

Weren't they the people Elisa and Broadway were reading about in the paper (I think it was in 'High Noon')?

Rosario Sanchez and Peter Choy> If they ever did actually show up in the flesh, you know what would be an interesting twist? If they showed up as members of the Quarrymen. Obviously, we don't know anything about them save that they saved a five year old child's life and were honored by the city for it, saying "it was the right thing to do." Now, imagine their motivation for joining the Quarrymen being a desire to protect their community from these fiendish monsters because, as Greg intended, the Quarrymen are not Thugs R Us.

Colbert 2008.... uh.... what do you mean it's not happening? Damn you, South Carolina Democrats!!!!

Greg B: "Deadly Force" is high up on my list of favorites, but I weighed it first. It stands well by itself, showcases the writing and animation fantastically, and showcases one of the show's fundamentals: that it's not a friendly world.

Now as far as everything else on my favorites list, they're not good candidates. Well, except maybe "Temptation." That one would definitely have potential.

Harvester of Eyes - [Minstrel75 at gmail dot com]
"Cunnilingus and psychiatry brought us to this." -Tony Soprano

BOB> Well, Greg Weisman knows.

Which two episodes to show first> Heh, I'm still of the opinion that "Awakening Part 1 and 2" are really the only correct answers. But, if there was no access to those episodes, but access to every other episode. I'm thinking "Temptation" and "The Edge". They're early on, we're still getting to know the characters, plus they show off the two lead villains beautifully. The animation is gorgeous.

"Enter Macbeth", I wouldn't show first. I like it, but the animation is pretty lousy in places, making it one of the ugliest episodes to look at it.

I definitely agree with Vaevictis that "Future Tense" is not the way to go either. A lot of people here seem to be picking just their favorite episodes instead of the episodes they think will hook the casual viewer. For example "City of Stone" and "Hunter's Moon" are my favorites, but I would not pick them first, especially "Hunter's Moon."

LOL, I think we can all agree that you wouldn't show "Avalon Part Two" first ;)

Greg Bishansky
Colbert 2008.... uh.... what do you mean it's not happening? Damn you, South Carolina Democrats!!!!

Matt >> I thought the same thing.

BOB >> Nobody knows, but my guess is that Bad Guys #2 will depict at least briefly the meeting in which Yama was exiled from Ishimura.

I've never had a gargoyles-geek-rant, and I've never tried to "hook" anybody (mainly because most of my friends were at the Convergence panel and are already at least casual fans) but my choice would depend on who I was trying to entertain. I would never choose Future Tense, because the impact of that episode depends on shaking up a universe and characters that the viewer has become comfortable with.

For someone fond of medieval/fantasy elements, I'd probably go with Awakening 1 and 2. For somebody who doesn't care for medieval stuff at all and would like more modern scenery, Deadly Force would be one pick. I'd also consider Enter Macbeth.

After reading today's TDIGUH and knowing how characters have a tendency to pop up ut of nowhere in this series, I can't help wonder if we'll eventually see Peter Choy and Rosaria Sanchez. One Day.

"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age, between all our clans, both Human and Gargoyle!!!" -Macbeth, 'City of Stone'

Two Episodes> Glad to see this is generating so much discussion. It is an incredibly artificial hypothetical for the most part. but I can see a person only wanting to commit to watching a half-hour or an hour's worth of episodes of this show her friend is so crazy about, and maybe even not wanting to do a multiparter just yet because she doesn't want to be in a postition where she wants to see more but really has to be somewhere. Plus I'm sure more than one of us started watching "gargoyles" with something other than "Awakening Part One". (I came in a little ways into Part Two.) But mainly, I just wanted to see what people would pick whe the answer couldn't automaticly be "Awakening Parts One and Two".

My first thoughts were the same as Matt's: "Deadly Force" (Season One, so not too much backstory, and definitely a great example of how the series differs from standard Disney Afternoon fare) and "The Edge" (still Season One, one of the better animated episodes, and really good at exploring Xanatos as an antagonst). But now I'm considering how feasable "The Mirror" might be. It is one of my favorite episodes and there's a lot of good stuff in there. Off the top of my head, my onlt real concerns would be that it's too much playing with the status quo (with all the shifting species and whatnot) for someone who doesn't really know the status quo and that it would kind of spoil the feeling of Elisa and Goliath's relationship having such a nice, gradual progression.

"Future Tense" is one of my favorite episodes, but I also think it's just not a good introduction to the series. Picture two people watching the episode: one a fan who's seen even episode up to this point, the other a newcomer seeing the show for the first time. The fan is shocked and excited but how woldly different everything is from normal. The newcomer just sits and smiles politely, wondering who all of these characters are, who this "Puck" guy at the end is, what's so important about a "Phoenix Gate" and why the fan is getting so excited. Except in very rare cases, I'd stick to Season One episodes that don't require the viewer to know so much of the show's history.

But yeah, if you ever actually have just a short time to show someone an episode or two of "Gargoyles" and their aren't any other restrictions, "Awakening" Part One and Two is probably the way to go.

Demonskrye

Matt> " Those are two fun episodes, but I wonder how fun they'd be for someone who had never seen the series at all. I can hardly think of any two episodes that'd be more confusing for new viewers then those."

Good point, there.

However, hypothetically speaking, if said person wanted to know where MacBeth and/or the shakesepeare element starts out in the show, 'Enter MacBeth' would be primo.

KingCobra_582 - [KingCobra_582 at hotmail dot com]
Thirty-Six. Nine.

This would be a tough call. Greg W.'s is definately a good one to go with. On my own, I'd have to say "The Mirror" for sheer fun. Toss up between "Long Way to Morning" and "Deadly Force." Either way, it looks like it's time for me to re-watch the series.
Asatira

Harvester: Thank God I live in Arizona (perhaps the remaining state in the USA not to have DST.) Unfortunately, going to school in SoCal amkes the above fact quite useless . . . .

Colbert 2008!

I think all of the choices so far are pretty good. But I'd also like to throw in "Upgrade". Thinking back now, my memories of it are a little foggy, but all the same I remember really liking this episode. "The Mirror" would probably be a good one too.
Rebel - [rebel2004nay at yahoo dot com]

I would show them part 2 and 3 of Awakenings. That way they get more of both time periods. Since Part 1 and 2 is so focused on 994A.D. If the friend is one of the people who is more into the modern time periods, they may not like it as much. But showing Part 2 and 3 with having the "Previously on Gargoyles" segment will catch them up to speed. They can see how the gargoyles were turned to stone and moved to NY.

Don't knock on Death's door. Ring his doorbell and run, he hates that.

GregW: That's exactly what I did a year ago. Halloween weekend. It was getting late and I happened to get into one of my "Gargoyle-Geek-Rants" (I'm sure everyone's here occasionally does that), and I convinced the guy to watch the first couple episodes. So we popped back into my dorm where he took the comfy seat and I popped in the Awakening episodes.

Two episodes later, it was past Midnight and I told him, "Hey, it's getting late, man." "He told me, "Oh come on! Can't we watch more??"

So we finished Awakening and moved on to the rest of Season I (I think we cut off before Deadly Force, as I wanted him to be better awake to appreciate it). It didn't take long that semester to finish off my DVDs.

However, just the other day, I convinced one of my friends to watch an epiosde of Gargoyles and I ended up showing him "The Mirror" (totally contradicting myself a year earlier). He loved it as well and if we can watch some later (after Mid-Terms).

So hey, it's probably a case-by-case basis. But I would typically start in order.

Phoenician - [<---My Kinda Useless Blog]
"The Suspense is Terrible . . . I Hope it Lasts" -- Willy Wonka

It's hard not to pick "The Mirror" and I might back that up with "Deadly Force" (in this incredibly artificial hypothetical).

BUT... If the idea is that _I_ can only show two episodes in the hopes of hooking THEM, so that THEY would want to watch more on their own. Well, then heck, I might show AWAKENING, Parts One & Two. If I can't hook 'em with those two and make them beg to watch the rest on their own, then I'm never gonna get 'em.

Greg Weisman

I suggest Awakening 3&4.
Hook her with those two episodes and show her the beginning later. Those two epsiodes are good, because we get about everything that made the series so great. Action, Adventure, Romance, Drama, Humor.
The basic background can be gleaned from the "Previously on...", but we still get lots of relevant character development and an accurate presentation of the show (set in "modern" times and not the middle ages).

"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age, between all our clans, both Human and Gargoyle!!!" -Macbeth, 'City of Stone'

Well I would definitely use The Mirror as one of the episodes. But I have to flip a coin between Deadly Force, Brother's Keeper, or Metamorphisis.

It's silly. It's a silly movie. There just isn't much there. Once you take it all apart, there's not much story, is there?- George Lucas on Spider-Man 3

Matt: That's just it. There are a lot of episodes on my list of favorites that I considered, but figured they would be even more confusing, such as "Shadows of the Past" or "Eye of the Beholder." I also thought about "Metamorphosis," but in addition to the backstory one needs to understand, that was honestly one of Xanatos's most elaborate plots. So elaborate, it was a bloody miracle he pulled it off.

I think "Double Jeopardy" might be another good possibility.

HofEyes> I considered "The Price" but figured the Mac-bot, the Weird Sisters and Demona mentions and other small things would be weird without context.

King Cobra> Those are two fun episodes, but I wonder how fun they'd be for someone who had never seen the series at all. I can hardly think of any two episodes that'd be more confusing for new viewers then those. Maybe "High Noon" or "Possession", which are favorites of mine.

I'd love to hear Greg W's response to this question. Hint, hint, nudge, nudge, Greg.

"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age, between all our clans, both Human and Gargoyle!!!" -Macbeth, 'City of Stone'

I was actually faced with a scenario like this the weekend before G'2007. My brother and I wanted to show his girlfriend an episode of Gargoyles to give her an idea of what exactly we were getting into (though I think my brother still doesn't have much of an idea. The Blue Mug freaked him, but that's another story). I recommended the episode "Deadly Force," which I think she liked. Right before the first act ended, I couldn't help but comment to her, "not something you see in a Disney cartoon every day, eh?"

The second episode I'd recommend would probably have to be "The Price."

Well, since you'd obviously want episodes that wouldn't be too confusing that limits a lot and tends to point me toward the first season. I think the two greatest episodes with the least amount of needed knowledge of prior events and are most representative of the perks of the series are "Deadly Force" and "The Edge".
Matt - [St Louis, Missouri, USA]
"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age, between all our clans, both Human and Gargoyle!!!" -Macbeth, 'City of Stone'

Fan Challenge> Here's a little question/scenario I though up earlier today. You have a friend who you're trying to get in to "Gargoyles". After a little persuasion, your friend agrees to watch the show with you. But the catch is, you can only show him/her two episodes to start with. Id s/he likes the episodes, s/he will watch more and may be on the road to fandom. Part of the deal is that you can't show episodes from a multiparter unless you choose two episodes from a two-part story. (So showing the entirety of "The Gathering" is allowed but you can't show anything else. "Hunter's Moon" Part 1 and Part 2 is out because it's three parts long.) You can pick episodes that aren't on the currently available DVD sets if you want. You can decide for yourselves whether lower quality/edited episodes might hurt your case for the series, or you can just pretend the whole series is available on DVD and quality isn't and issue. Heck, you can ecen pick a "Goliath Chronicles" episode if you really want.

So what's it gonna be. What two episodes d you use to get someone into "Gargoyles"?

Demonskrye

It made sense the first time when he was on a day that had canon events in 1996. But now, I'm a bit confused why he continues to include 1996 in TDIGUH. Probably because he so loves to taunt us.

The apparent sunset time also depends on the elevation of the point in question as well as the elevation of the terrain at the horizon. Did you factor the height of the Eyrie Building and the profile of the New York City skyline into your calculations?

BTW, I think we've reached a new level of geekdom with this discussion. :P

Antiyonder: Nice review, but it could have used some lesbian vampires. Also, where's the Macguffin?

VA: As far the sunset is concerned, maybe it has something to do with the light. But then again, it takes light from the sun eight minutes to reach Earth. So the sun actually sets before we see it set. So even if the gargoyles' internal clocks are set ten minutes after sunset, they might be accurate, anyway.

Harvester of Eyes - [Minstrel75 at gmail dot com]
"Ninjas don't kill people. Pat Morita playing ninjas kills people." -Upright Citizens Brigade.

But the time of sunset also depends on latitude, right? Is the 4:51 for New York City? If so, then the 4:50 on TDIGUH may be when the Clan awakens. Of course, we don't know that they wake up precicely at sunset. Maybe their internal clocks are set to 10 minutes after sunset, who knows.

Anyway, here are my reviews for Possessions and The Journey. Comments on my review will be helpful:

Possesions- Didn't expect to see an immediate follow up on Puck teaching Alexander the use of his powers. It was also fun to see the return of Coldstone and crew.

What helped to make the soul transfer interesting was the choice to keep Broadway, Angela and Brooklyn's voice the same. That decision payed off even more since Brooklyn's behavior was puzzling.

As far as the forshadowing goes, I'm embarassed to admit I didn't see the pairing between Broadway and Angela coming. I thought she would end up with Brooklyn.

The Journey- Definately better than the remaining Goliath Chronicles, as it was the only one of the season written by Greg Weisman. The episode could have done without the opening monologue as it can't hold a candle to the "Previously On Gargoyles" segment.

It's easy to see the differences between this and the rest of the season. One being that this is the only episode to deal with Xanatos' amoral nature (that he can't be trusted completely). This episode also brought up more of the Gargoyles continuity than the remaining episodes.

Seeing Vinnie make peace with Goliath was a nice little twist. Still where the episode fails, the comic improves.

I'm probably going to submit this in the next set of questions when the ask feature is reopened. See what Greg thinks of my reviewing. I'm kind of using the tv.com reviews to help me do better comic reviews.

Now we know when Shari told Thailog about that meeting with Coldstone. Though the part of that entry that I found the most entertaining was the "withheld" sections for the different times of day (obviously connected to events in the #7 to #9 story).

The next event on the timeline at GargWiki is the real-life return of the Stone of Destiny to Scotland, on November 15, about two weeks after Thailog's Halloween bash. This strengthens the theory that the Rock in the upcoming issues is that stone.

Scary thought thinking Thailog going there on a DNA hunt.> One problem, the spell to access Avalon has been lost for 1000+ years, aka the spell was in The Grimorium. Anyways, raiding Avalon wouldn't be easy. You would have to bring iron weapons (assumedly bells) just to keep you protected.

Todd - <Thailog moved into the Eyrie Building shortly before the present-day events of "Vows"> Only "Vows"? Heck, I'm more thinking CoS. Goliath & clan flew almost directly to the Eyrie Building almost immediately on the last night of CoS. I'm thinking about why Thailog didn't meet Demona during CoS.

Of course, now that we've reached November 1, this puts certain events from Upgrade into December.

Wingless> I don't think we need to worry about Thailog raiding the Avalon clan's DNA. He may plan for a lot, but I don't think he'll expend more energy than necessary to achieve his ends, and now he's got plenty to work with.

That and, if he knows how Avalon works, he'll know that you don't get directly back from there, and I don't believe he'd want to be subject to the will of Avalon as to his destination. He doesn't strike me as one that would allow himself to be used that way.

Which brings up something else: if the samples don't stay fresh, they won't be viable, which means they'd be worthless to him. And nothing personally portable that I know of would keep them fresh/cool/frozen indefinitely.

New revelation in Greg's "This Day in the Gargoyles Universe" feature (at least, I assume that it was a new revelation). Thailog moved into the Eyrie Building shortly before the present-day events of "Vows", and was therefore presumably living there when Goliath and Demona both showed up for Xanatos and Fox's wedding. (Obviously, Xanatos and Owen had a good scheme to keep him out of the way when the wedding took place.)

"It's been mentioned that Puck resets Owens age to the point of His and Xanatos's original 'Lifetime of loyal Owen service deal' agreement every time he transforms back and forth, from Puck to return to Owen.
But if Alex where to die and consequently Owen could never again become the Puck, would this result in Owen growing old and the Puck/Owen dying?"

Another interesting bit of TDiGUH trivia: we learn that Xanatos's decision to plead guilty to receiving stolen property was partly due to his and Elisa's mutual desire to keep the gargoyles' existence a secret.

In another answer, Greg mentions the D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths, which was my first introduction to greek mythology. (Same deal with their Norse mythology book.) In fact, my sister and I read and referenced our original copy so many times that it fell apart and we took it upon ourselves to buy a new one.

I've been doing reviews for some of my favorite programs on the site www.tv.com, and I've done one for Gargoyles (the series and the episode Possessions). That said, I've never been critiqued for my reviews yet, but I was wondering if anyone would care to comment on my review for the series. Is it too detailed in some spots, not detailed enough? Anyway, here it is:

"I probably couldn't do the series justice in my review, but I'll certainly try.

Like many, I enjoy the show for it's appealing characters and interesting stories. The show demonstrates originality in coming up with rarely used ideas or putting a spin on established cliches.

An example would be the episode "Future Tense". The episode at surface appears to be a copout as the events were a dream. When infact it serves to foreshadow future episode/comic story elements.

The show is also well balanced. While I do have a share of favorite adult cartoons, Gargoyles manages to be adult/mature without relying on adult content nonstop. It's serious without being depressing.

Here's hoping the comic will continue for a long time."

Antiyonder - [antiyonder at yahoo dot com]

Algernon> I'm no legal expert, but this is how I understand the penal system.

After being released from prison, you are usually put on probation for a certain amount of time, making sure you meet with a probation officer. They evaluate you to make sure you're on the up and up and not going to be inclined to commit any further crimes against society. While you're on probation, if you violate any laws or commit another crime, the punishment against you is likely to be more severe, in the hopes to encourage wrong doers to stop wrong doing all together.

It appears that Xanatos was ordered to serve a probationary period of three years.

Anthony Tini - [tinitinytony hotmail com]

Thanks for finding that, Algernon. I guess I should've been a bit more knowledgeable considering that I was the one who asked Greg that, though it was probably from several years ago.

So, with that stuff in mind, Lex probably wouldn't be considered a rookery father to Artus or the others because he didn't father an egg in that generation. However, he probably would participate in raising the kids and would be looked upon by them as something of a "rookery uncle" though no term like that would exist. I suppose it all goes back to the fact that a Gargoyle Clan represents one family, a family where biological relationships are meaningless. Some gargoyles would indeed be rookery parents and some wouldn't, but the whole clan, the whole family, would participate in raising the kids.

Matt - [St Louis, Missouri, USA]
"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age, between all our clans, both Human and Gargoyle!!!" -Macbeth, 'City of Stone'

Just popping by to wish everyone a happy Halloween

Matt> I was going to raise a similar point about wheatear one would have to actually contribute an egg to a given rookery to by considered a rookery parent. I searched through the archives to what Greg had to say on the subject

"matt writes...
1. would two gay or lesbian gargoyles still be considered rookery parent s to certain generations of hatchlings?

2. if a gargoyle had no mate, would he/she still be able to be a rookery parent to certain generations if he/she wanted too?

3. if a gargoyle is the biological parent to a hatchling in a rookery ,can he/she choose not to be a rookery parent and be accepted by the clan for that choice?

Greg responds...
1. Traditionally, and I'm not saying I approve, the only gargoyles who were considered rookery parent s were the ones who actually contributed to the breeding. But there are also uncles and aunts, grand parent s, cousins etc. who helped with child-rearing.

2. Again, traditionally, they were still not counted as ' parent s' but as members of the clan, they would share responsibility for raising the children. How much of that responsibility was assumed by any individual, depended on that individual's desire and abilities.

3. Uh.... This again would be beyond unusual and not well accepted or understood by the clan. Also it would take a sort of conscious statement on the part of the individual. He or she would have to be making a big point of not wanting to participate. Because given that there's a whole clan there raising each new generation, it would be easy enough to just not do all THAT much with the kids, if you weren't inclined.
Good questions, by the way."

On an unrelated note could someone please explain how this probation system works. I would have thought that after serving his time Xanatos would have been in the clear legally, but then my knowledge of the American justice system is pretty much confined to stuff I've picked up from "Ally McBeal".

Algernon
"When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up" -C. S. Lewis

Greg B> Are we sure on all that? Assuming Iago didn't father an egg in the 988 clutch, would he still be considered a rookery father to Gabriel, Angela and the others? Does being the father/mother of an egg mean you're a rookery parent or does just being in the right age range mean you are or is taking the role of a rookery parent mean you are one?

I guess what I mean is, lets say Iago did not father an egg in 988. That means he isn't technically a father to the next generation, but would everyone assume he is a rookery father? What if he just decided to take on the responsibilities of a rookery father, would he be considered one then? Or would he be considered a rookery father just for being the same age as a bunch of the other rookery fathers?

What if he did father an egg, but didn't act as a rookery father? Would he still be considered one?

It all leads me to think of Tachi. Angela and Broadwy will be too young to be her rookery parents, but I do think they'll assist in raising her. Will she see them as rookery parents? And when Artus hatches, will he see Lex as a rookery father because he helped raise him and was the right age, even though Lex clearly didn't father an egg in Artus' rookery?

Sorry if this is beyond confusing. I guess the core question here is this: Goliath has stated that when a clutch of eggs hatches they are the children of the whole clan. That is the Gargoyle Way. However, did he mean the WHOLE clan or just those that parented the eggs (either biologically speaking or simply in assisting in raising them)? Would Hudson be a rookery father to Angela or Nashville or Tachi or Artus if he conciously takes on the role of father-figure to them, or does he also need to be the right age or actually be one of the producers of an egg in their generation?

"We're not the last. We're not alone." - Hudson

Tony> Your use of the word "uncle" and "grandpa" suggests that you might be misinterpreting what we're talking about. The topic of debate is not whether or not Broadway and Angela will be good parents, but whether they'd raise their children the "human way" or the "gargoyle way". Lex, Brooklyn, Broadway and even Goliath will be just as much fathers to Artus, Gwen, Lancelot, Nashville, Tachi, etc. Likewise, Katana, Angela and even Elisa will equally be mothers to all of them.

Greg says that they'll raise them the gargoyle way, and some people are trying to reconcile that with Angela's upbringing.

Greg Bishansky

Matt>I'm pretty sure that the probation expiration is for his receiving of stolen property. So sure actually that while I'm not a gambling man, I'd wager money on it.

Greg B> I see the topic that everyone is discussing is about the way Angela was raised and how it's going to affect her in raising her children or the clans children or what have you.

What I'm saying is that it doesn't matter. She could have been raised by wolves or circus folk, but as long as there is love and understanding between Broadway and Angela, then the raising of the gargoyle children will turn out fine and won't be an issue. And with grandpa Goliath, grandpa Hudson, and Lex, Brook, and Bronx as "uncles" then I'm worried about the children being raised improperly even less.

Algernon - Welcome to this cr.

I have a few questions about the comics. Due to recent unexpected event - which will I explain in more detail on Friday - I may be in a cash flow problem for a while. Is going to be worthwhile for me to order the corrected version of issue #6 right away? Like many others, I plan on hanging onto the original version of gargoyles issue #6.

What is the expected price point for bad guys comics?

Within 5-10 years, does anybody think there's going to be some person complaining about getting the wrong version of gargoyles issue #6: either wanting the original and getting the corrected or wanting the corrected version and getting the original?

<Yes, Antiyonder you're right. I think Greg even mentioned that he planned on Renard dying soon, and I've suspected that Goliath would probably be at the funeral, since he considers Renard a friend.> Actually, at this point, if Renard's death is even within this part story arc. He hasn't been re-introduced yet and to have his appearance in the comic be the one where he dies seems to be a . . waste.

Also, is anyone dressing up for Halloween? I'm not in the dressing mood this year, but I do plan to dress up next yeat. My costume choice is Clark Kent. Bascially it means I'll wear a jacket, glasses (which I wear naturally) and a Superman T-Shirt underneath. Basically, because Superman is one of the many costume ideas, so I figured dressing as his alterego would be a fairly fresh concept (though I could be wrong). That and people say I look more like Clark Kent than Peter Parker.

Algernon> Regardless of how Post-Timedancer Brooklyn feels about Coldsteel, I am wondering if a PT Brooklyn VS Coldsteel fight is planned. Refering of course to Brooklyn's comment "And this scrawny Gargoyle will be waiting!"

Antiyonder - [antiyonder at yahoo dot com]

Just some thoughts about the Illuminati numbering system and in general:

When did the numbering system evolve as a method of greeting? We saw that in vows it had not been made the official way, as Xanatos and (I'm too lazy to find out who) simply showed their symbol to each other.

We see from Mace that members used to get tattoos. Did this used to be a greeting?

As rank seems to be very important, I'd like to know what rank (see above) held. Perhaps it is only a greeting when the higher ranking member knows that he is, as it would be rude to make the first move otherwise.

How secret is the society? They seem to have people in influential positions, but they also seem to take care only to speak business in one another's confidence. But on the flip-side, they recruit Matt even though he wants to expose them, though that is probably to keep track of him more than anything else.

As Greg has mentioned, the society doesn't need to be full. I wonder what the dynamics of the different levels are, and if there are different tiers of importance so that 33-36 are all basically the same, the only difference being time.

I'm sure we won't find out many of these things for a long long time, and I like that, but it is fun to speculate.
Any ideas/questions you would like to share?

Angela and parenting: I'd like to see more of a return to "the gargoyle way" from her, because it makes the gargoyle characters seem truly different, having a more richer, developed culture. It would also give some more insight into how and why Angela viewed biological parentage as significant. It might have been that she, perhaps like some viewers, might see collective parenting as "colder", even though it's really not.

As to fandom and that issue, yeah, I get tired of seeing garogyle nuclear families (Brooklyn's and representations of the artist's family excluded, of course) for the same reason: it takes away some of the imagination that went into creating that race. I do know that for some, it's just a matter of going for what they can relate too above all else, and I want to respect that, but part of me just wishes that they'd leave it as is.

I love the theory that Shari is Scherazarde, but I'm willing to believe that she told the story so well because of TV conventions, that in relating flashbacks and exposition, things are much clearer and more detailed in reality, so that the audience can get a clear picture

ANTIYONDER: You raise a good point. It's hard to imagine what forty years of bouncing up and down the timestream might do to a person's outlook on life and it's highly likely that the Brooklyn who comes back with a mate, a couple of kids and a dog will be a very different character then the one we're familiar with.

But I was thinking more short term, since Coldsteel will be showing up the next comic arc. Plus it seems to me that if Brooklyn felt used after being duped by Demona imagine how he must feel after being forced to watch helplessly as his own body was hijacked and used against the people he loves. I imagine he'd feel pretty violated.

Rebel> I think Brooklyn's reaction to ColdSteel could be very interesting, not so much because of his reaction itself (I think we're all pretty much expecting Brook to hate ColdSteel), but because of the underlying tensions it could bring up. Brooklyn may well feel that the reason he didn't end with Angela (and Broadway did) is because of the events of "Possession". Thus he might blame ColdSteel for "ruining his chances" with the only eligable female gargoyle in town. If Brooklyn actually voices this feeling, it could prompt Angela to counter with the reasons she is with Broadway. I'd really like to see that, not least because it would help silence anyone who still feels like Angela and Brooklyn only ended up together because they were possessed by the spirits of Othello and Desdemona.

Algernon> I'd say welcome to the CR, but if you've been lurking for a while that doesn't seem quite apt. How about nice to see you posting. Also, is your screen-name inspired by Proffesor Algernon from Exo-Squad? Great show.

Angela, Gabe and the ohers were definitly named by K, T and the M. Greg has confirmed that. And naming is addictive so I get the feeling that the Manhattan Clan will name their children. As cool an idea as the hatchlings naming themselves is, I can't see them remaining nameless until they are old enough to do so.

As for the Gargoyle Way, I think Nashville and Tachi will help Angela see the merits of it and by the time Artus hatches I think she'll see it as naturally as the human way. Plus Algernon makes a good point, Tom and Katharine may have raised The Eggs as their own children, but I'm sure the gargoyles saw the Magus as a "rookery father" also, even if they didn't use that term. So, Angela wasn't raised strictly the human way. Many children, three parents. Kinda a blend of gargoyle and human child-rearing strategies.

"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age, between all our clans, both Human and Gargoyle!!!" -Macbeth, 'City of Stone'

I believe Tom, Magus, and Kathrine named the Avalon clan. Angela and Gabriel are obvious references to angels. And being Demona's original "name" from Goliath was "Angel" and "Angel of the Night" and as far as they knew, Demona was killed along in the massacre and innocent, naming her Angela was probably a natural thing considering her mother's nickname and "death".

The other names are taken from Shakespeare and history. Boudicca obviously didn't name herself, the clan or the humans may have named her.

Hey there, my name is Algernon I'm a long time lurker at this site but this is my first post in the comment room and I just thought I'd chime in on a few points.
Firstly on the topic of Angela's approach to motherhood, it's important to remember that she and the rest of the Avalon clan were sort of communally raised themselves by Katharine, Tom and the Magus so the gargoyle way won't be too much of a leap for her. Of course in the case of Artus it may be a moot unless Brooklyn and Katana have a third child.
On an unrelated note I wonder if Brooklyn might develop a long standing grudge against Coldsteel, similar to his vendetta against Demona. In a lot of ways what Iago did to him in "Possesion" was way worst then how Demona used him in "Temptation".

Algernon

I'm sure Angela will accept the gargoyle way- I think she already has, but issue 6 shows she still notices biology. Eventually, she'll probably get over it completely. However, it's possible that she'll have an overly close relationship with her own biological children, especially the first, because he'll be the first one she meets. It's also possible that she'll have a very close relationship with some of the other eggs. While children are raised by the whole clan, I imagine that a child would often form a particularly strong bond with one parent. Not that that parent is somehow more valuable, just that (s)he relates to him/her better and they spend more time together.

Tony> Um, that is not what we're talking about.
Greg Bishansky

I'm sure it will all work out. Angela was raised by loving parents and Broadway has a huge heart, so I don't think the two will have any trouble raising the children as long as they do it with love.
Anthony Tini - [tinitinytony hotmail com]

greg B> I agree that too many fanfics (though I don't read a tone of them) just ignore the gargoyle tradition of raising children communally and too many people see "Mark of the Panther" as Goliath accepting the human view of parent/child relationships. I imagine that a big part of Angela coming around to the gargoyle way of thinking will be seeing how the tradition actually works in practice. Through talking with the rest of the Manhattan clan and eventually seeing how new hatchlings are loved and cared for by the entire clan, she'll probably come to understand and accept the radition. I can certainly understand why she intially doesn't though. She was raised without any way of knowing about gargoyle communal child rearing. And Goliath, being a first time parent in a situation he never anticipated, kind of messed things up. After Angela found out they were biologically parent and child, Goliath actually started treating her less like his daughter and more like just another member of the clan, out of fear of showing favor to his biological child. I think Angela probably equated communal raising with Goliath essentially sying "I'm not going to have a close relationship with you anymore because you're supposed to be the child of the entire clan". Once she figures out that normally, communal raising of the young means that children are loved and cared for by everyone and are allowed to form close relationships regardless of who's related to who, she'll probably accept the idea.
Demonskrye

Angela and her kids. Yes, how could she favor one hatchling over the other? Yeah, she was/is very interested in hr biological parentage, and by no means do I expect that not to continue, unless she disowns Demona somewhere down the line, which honestly is not at all outside the realm of possibility.

Part of Angela might cling to the notion of having a special bond with the eggs that are specifically her's until the eggs actually hatch, and wouldn't you know it, her maternal gargoyle instincts take over and she loves them all equally.

Personally, I am glad Greg is allowing the gargoyles to keep their own culture and traditions. Way too many fanfics out there turn them into "humans with wings" which takes away a lot of the appeal.

TTTony> Well, Katharine, Tom and the Magus definitly named Angela and her siblings probably when they were very young. But Artus, Gwen and Lance naming themselves is something I hadn't considered and that is a pretty neat thought.

Naming Topic> Maybe Angela and Broadway don't name their children, but allow them to choose their own name when they are old enough. Broadway named himself. Maybe Angela did as well, but she was raised by humans, so maybe she didn't.

Shari Topic> I'm sure Shari doesn't know all the World Tour stories, i.e. Future Tense, but if she starts telling that story then there would be something unworldly about her.

Anthony Tini - [tinitinytony hotmail com]

Rebel> They might not, but they also might. Greg's pointing out that we have no direct evidence that Broadway and Angela name their biological children, but that doesn't mean that they didn't either. We tend to assume that because Broadway and Angela have a particular connection to Arthurian legend (Broadway from the events of "Lighthouse" and Angela from meeting Arthur during "Avalon"), that they were the ones to give their kids those names. But any other member of the clan would be equally capable of suggesting those names. At this point we just don;t know.

On a related note, I wonder at what point Angela moves to the more traditional gargoyle way of thinking that children belong to the whole clan. Maybe it's from seeing how the Manhattan clan interacts and possibly having specific conversations with Broadway and realizing that it's simply not important to the rest of her clan and that they function as a family regardless. Or maybe it's when Brooklyn returns from timedancing and she's actually in the position to help raise gargoyles who aren't her biological children.

Wingless> "Travels with Bronx" by Angela Destine? ;)

Demonskrye

Greg only said we shouldn't neccesarily assume Broadway and Angela named their biological kids, that doesn't mean they didn't. But yeah, it has gotten me thinking how those kids end up with their names. By the time Lance is hatched I would think there were at least a few eggs in his rookery, and since the Manhattan Clan will continue follow the Gargoyle Way, they shouldn't even bother to distinguish their own offspring, or rather consider all the eggs their offspring. So why the name scheme for these three? Coincidence? Are all the Manhattan Clan's offspring named after legendary figures?

For the record, I can't see Angela NOT knowing that certain hatchlings are her's biologically, but I can see her ignoring it, how can she favor one hatchling over the others? Meanwhile, I doubt it would even occur to Broadway.

But if you meant main characters, then you were right. The Magus and Archmage were recurring characters but not main protagonists.

The reprint is listed for November on SLG's site but I'm not going to assume anything is finalized until SLG and Diamond both list the same date.

Yes, Antiyonder you're right. I think Greg even mentioned that he planned on Renard dying soon, and I've suspected that Goliath would probably be at the funeral, since he considers Renard a friend.

Vaevictus: Actually, as far as Canmores are concerned, we saw Charles fall to his death. Which was pretty badass.

Actually, I have a feeling that even if the Society didn't know about the World Tour, they probably knew Goliath was missing. Xanatos knew, and so did Matt, and I imagine the Society probably has ways of keeping tabs on its members.

Few Little Spoilers Ahead. Anyone still need these warnings?

Wingless> I actually thought that was one of the bettwe drawings of Angela in an issue with serveal wonky drawings of her.

Shari and the Himalayas Trip> It's possible that one or more Illuminati members have been tracking the route of the World Tour after the fact. I can see where the Illuminati would have a great deal of intrest in world traveling gargoyles circling the world in an Avalonian craft. If the canon-in-training about the higher level members of the Illuminati holds up, the organization may already know a little about Avalon and how it works. If they're aware that Avalonian skiffs send their passengers where they need to be, they would likely want to know where the four travellers were sent so they can try to guess what the overall purpose of their journey might have been. Aside from that, if Shari is who we suspect she is, she probably has her ways of finding interesting stories. It's also hinted at the end that she knows about the fate of the ColdTrio and she may also have been clued in to whatever Xanatos and ColSteel will be up to next issue.

Death> The TV series did kill off quite a few people, but we have yet to see any really major players die. The Magus was probably the character with the most screen time of the ones who met their permanent end, and by the time he died, we wouldn't have even expected him to still be alive prior to seeing "Avalon". Mind you, I'm not eager to see anyone pass on anytime soon, and it's quite unlikely given that the comic is still just getting started. But it will be interesting to see how it's handled once Anubis comes a-knocking.

VA's right, Tony -- there've been many a death during the TV run of Gargoyles, the Magus being the one major recurring character. And while most of the deaths have been off-screen/one-shot characters, you can't deny the aftermath of their deaths (the show's premise IS a massacre of 40-odd gargoyles, afterall). But to answer your question: We'll probably see another death eventually -- but only if the story calls for it.

Sorry for the double post.

Various other humans (Canmore, Kenneth II, Findlaech, Duncan, etc.) died in City of Stone. Granted most of those who died were one-off characters or nameless Goon Squad, but the Magus was a recurring character.

And we know that Greg has decided how each of the current Manhattan Clan die. If we get enough comic issues, theoretically we'll see them all die eventually.

By the way, I just read a new response in Ask Greg, which clears up some confusion we had about the Guatemalan gargoyles a while back:

"I Love Guatemala writes...

You said in the archives, in regards to the Guatemalan gargoyels, that "while the pendants are keeping them flesh by day, they age at the same rate as humans." If Zafiro II has the saphire amulet, how can he be the same age as Samson and Delilah if the pendant makes him age at the rate of a human, which is twice as fast as that of a gargoyle?
Greg responds...

As more recent archives will indicate, I've since gone with the notion that the pendants magically compensate, and the pendant-wearing gargoyles age at a normal gargoyle rate."

Rebel - [rebel2004nay at yahoo dot com]

Shari topic> She tells like the story like she was there, just like when Macbeth told the King Arthur story to Broadway, but we know that Macbeth wasn't here and it's quite possible that Shari wasn't there either. So the question still remains, how does she know and what's her purpose to know, and what is her purpose spending time with Thailog and why does she choose to tell that specific story?

In the show, no one was ever killed off. I'm wondering if in the comics we'll see someone get killed off. I wonder if Greg could ever kill off one of his characters, maybe a villain, i.e. Coldsteel.

Bob> I searched the archives and found this answer:
Greg responds...
Gabriel is the leader. Angela was his second. Now Ophelia is.
The clan chose the leader. He chose his second.

I'm assuming since Tom and Katharine are part of the clan, they probably had a vote as well.

Anthony Tini - [tinitinytony hotmail com]

does anyone know how Gabriel became leader of the Avalon Clan, did the other gargoyles vote, did he just take over, or did katherine, tom and the magus have something to do with it?

It just seems that Sheri seemed to know more than about the one trip. I could understand if one of the humans that watch the whole encounter with Coldstone said something. Then again, Goliath & crew did talk about their Avalon travel agency to Coldstone.
Wingless

Wingless: Shari probably got her information (directly or indirectly) from any of the 666 possible members of the Illuminati.

It's not hard to think that Shari got her intel in a manner similar to Mace Malone finding out about gargoyles (directly/indirectly) from Xanatos ("One of our lower eschalon (sp?) members").

So if it was an Illuminatus that informed her, which one did (if its one we know)?

But hey, then again, maybe she just found out on her own (which is pretty interesting too).

Addendum: By changing the region of a DVD drive being simple, I mean, that usually a menu pops up when you try to play a DVD of the wrong region, which informs of what is going on and gives you the option to change the region on the spot. No weird programmes or difficult setups necessary (unless you want to make the DVD drive completely region free).
Anonymous

I don't know about Australia, but in Europe it is almost impossible to get a DVD drive which can't be switched to another region five times. So if you want one just for Gargoyles, go ahead, it's usually no trouble at all to change the region of a DVD drive and it works with virtually every playing software (Windows Media Player, VLC, PowerDVD, etc). Just that you can only change the region five times, so using DVDs from other regions with that drive would be somewhat of a no-no.
(I went that route, I have a drive for region 2 DVDs and one for region 1 DVDs, no problem at all).

Or you can just search for a code to make a DVD player you might already have region free. It's not actually illegal or anything and usually is just a button combination. But in this case you have to be aware of one thing, US uses NTSC as a display format, Australia uses PAL. Your TV might not be able to properly display that, you'd get a black and white and stripey picture (unless your TV actually can switch between both formats or your DVD player can - PAL and NTSC aren't a problem with PCs).

(I recently got a DVD set from Australia. Since I don't have space for another DVD drive, I made the DVD player region free, works quite well.)
