Dear Greg
Hello! I'm keeping my name anonymous because I don't like exposing it on a public forum like this. I hope you understand.
Anyway, onto the question!
Greg, I know you personally don't have any ill intent, but why won't you listen to your LGBT+ or Muslim fans when they tell you how you handled Halo? You seem like such a decent guy outside of that, but for some reason this particular area is a blind spot of yours.
I may not be Muslim, but surely the massive outcry from Muslim fans when you had Halo publicly denounce her Muslimhood while still having her wear a religiously significant garb specific to Muslims must have meant SOMETHING to you?
I'm an out and proud member of the LGBT+ community (at least online), so seeing you dismiss all the people you hurt and refuse to actually, GENUINELY apologize for it (no, I don't count "sorry you're so offended" as an apology, that's just condescending), and to see you continue on the path that you now KNOW hurts us as if the characters you control are somehow out of your hands...that hurts, Greg. That hurts more than you can POSSIBLY imagine. I was so excited for Young Justice season 3. I was so excited hearing that you'd have an explicitly nonbinary character in the show. And then you did what you did. You really hurt your fans in the LGBT+ community, Greg.
I'm categorically not claiming that the destinies of these characters are completely out of my hands. But...
1. We can't make changes to already made episodes in response to recently aired episodes. It's just not possible for me to, for example, change episodes 319-326 as a result of what fans say about 318. So even if I agreed with the response, it's too late to make that kind of change, which many people seemed - at the time - to be demanding. And I readily admit that in hindsight I got defensive about that. We HAVE listened, however, and it did affect how we handled things in Season Four.
2. Whether you like it or not, I simply do NOT have complete control over these characters. I do not own these characters. It is ABSOLUTELY TRUE that even in 2021, TPTB have not given Brandon and myself a completely free hand with every single LGBTQ+ character on these issues. Things are a lot better than they were in 2010. A lot better. But we still do not have 100% autonomy. We just flat-out don't. Certain things we had planned for Season Three were rejected by TPTB at a relatively late date, and I do believe those choices hurt the overall balance of the series on these issues.
3. I don't know where you heard that we'd explicitly have a nonbinary character on the show in advance of Halo's reveal. Not from me. I can't - or won't - be held responsible for rumors. Now, of course, Halo stated she's nonbinary in one of our episodes, but we viewed that statement as the first step in her journey, and we'd appreciate some patience. You are, of course, not obligated to be patient with us. Maybe we've already lost your trust. And that's understandable. And I am sorry for that. But trust would sure be appreciated if you can manage to suspend your opinion for a while longer.
4. We've been working with MPAC (the Muslim Public Affairs Council), GLAAD and OUT on these plotlines. They are aware of our long term plans for Halo and have been extremely supportive. This suggests to me that the response you speak of isn't monolithic. So I'll admit it has been hard for me to apologize for things, which I believe, in the long term, will be appreciated by the Muslim and LGBTQ+ communities. Now, I may be wrong about that, but I'm trying to be honest here. I believe in what we're doing, and our advisors do, as well. In the end, we may indeed get it wrong, but we are trying really hard to get it right. And contrary to what seems to be everyone's assumption, we are not and have never been operating in a vacuum, assuming that we knew best and that we didn't need to listen to the LGBTQ+ community. We are listening, we have been listening, and we will continue to listen. What we've found is that opinions clearly vary within that community. It's admittedly hard to please everyone, but believe it or not, we are actually trying.
5. It sincerely makes me feel awful that I've "hurt my fans in the LGBT+ community". I AM truly sorry about that. But I know for a fact that I didn't hurt ALL my fans in that community. Because I've talked to a bunch of them. Not on Twitter or on ASK GREG but in real life. Some of them weren't thrilled with what we've aired up to this point. Some of them were just fine with what we did. And most (in both categories) have - once told where we were going - been actually pretty happy with it all. Now, you don't have the advantage of that inside information and most of our fans don't either. But please don't think I don't care, that we don't care. The YJ crew and I care very, very much. And I definitely apologize for being condescending and defensive in the past. That's not me at my best. I can only ask for forgiveness.
6. I've always tried to be an ally. I have very good reasons to try to be an ally, (a) because it's the right thing to do, and (b) because many, many, many people I love and hold close to my heart are a part of the LGBTQ+ community.
So I AM sorry for past mistakes. But if you give us a little more rope, I don't think we'll hang ourselves. I believe our good intentions will not only amount to good intentions. I think they'll prove out. And if I'm wrong about that, I will truly endeavor to apologize again.
How did you go about developing a voice for Ultra-Humanite?
I went down to my lowest register and roughed it up. Then we used technology to deepen it further and to futz it, so that it sounded like it was coming out of an electronic voice box.
Wow, Greg! Things are really starting to heat up with today's episode. Two more weeks!
1. How old is Trajectory?
1. As of the end of Team Year Nine, Trajectory is 15 (assuming she survives that long).
Fans pointed out some errors that I will correct here:
By the end of Team Year Zero:
Henry Fyff is 14.
Tatsu Yamashiro is 21.
Why is it that none of the League or Batman Inc. have ever referred to Darkseid by name? Having had a little contact with New Genesis and Apokolips, would not Batman and the League know by now who's pulling the strings?
Pulling the strings on what?
And are you sure they haven't referred to Darkseid by name? I feel like they have.
1. Were there any hints to Kaldur's sexuality you put in the previous two seasons? IF not, was there a moment you wanted to? If so, what was it?
2. Has Wyynde labeled his sexuality? Or does he, like Kaldur, not identify with a label?
1. I don't think there were any legit hints in Seasons One or Two. There was behavior that originally suggested the idea of him being non-hetero-normative to me, specifically his fixation on someone out of reach. That's not definitive, by any means. But it's nevertheless what put the idea into my head. Otherwise, we did what we wanted to do on this front.
2. In my mind, Wyynde considers himself to be gay. But I haven't discussed labeling with Brandon recently. So I reserve the right for the two of us to collectively de-label him at a later date.
Hi, Greg. Hope youâre well.
On the 2019 SDCC Young Justice promotional tote bag, Victor Stone was shown with the G designation G-08. While he obviously gained a B designation later in the season, this caused me to become very curious about the G-Series.
We know that Jeff, Brion and Violet make up the first three G-zeta designations, and it can be assumed that Jace and Forager got ones as well. But my confusion lies in which characters fill G-06 and G-07. I suppose it could be possible for Tara to have received zeta access before Vic, but who would the other G-series member be? Does Oracle have one? Metamorpho?
I know that you prefer to let these flow naturally from the series, but since the G-series is essentially defunct now, could you possibly clear up this confusion? Was it a mistake or are we missing something?
Yeah, fair enough...
G-01 Pierce-Comma-Jefferson
G-02 Markov-Comma-Brion
G-03 Halo
G-04 Jace-Comma-Helga
G-05 Harper-Comma-James
G-06 Forager
G-07 Markov-Comma-Tara
G-08 Stone-Comma-Victor
I'm REALLY loving this season of Young Justice! I'm glad to hear it's been renewed. One of the aspects that I've really found interesting is the exploration of how society on Earth-16 views Metas. It really makes the world feel fleshed out and distinct from our own.
1. How does the general public view non-meta heroes? Are they less popular because they are less 'cool' than the meta heroes or do people view them as inspiring underdogs?
2. Do people suspect non-meta heroes might secretly be meta humans or simply have non-apparent meta abilities? For instance, do they wonder if Batman might be a meta if he can keep up with the Justice League?
3. Is there any fears from the non-meta populace that metas may 'replace' them?
Thanks!
1. Individual heroes get individual responses from different individuals. Some people, for example, love Batman. Others are afraid of him, etc. There's no monolithic response.
2. Some might.
3. Uh, yeah!
Hey Greg! I really enjoyed the latest episode of Young Justice - Unknown Factors - and had a few questions about Bumblebee, who I really enjoyed seeing again.
1. Bumblebee's baby had not previously been named in the comics to my knowledge, was her name an invention of the writers or did DC have that information on file or help out with choosing the name?
2. Are Karen and Mal retired by season 3?
3. What are your own thoughts on Karen's choice to manipulate her daughter's genes? Do you agree with her that it was the right choice?
Thank you!
1. We had to come up with a name - and even a gender for their baby. All our research and inquiry revealed that neither Rhea's name or gender had been revealed.
2. I assume you mean as heroes, right? If so, more or less.
3. You have NO IDEA which choice she made. This has surprised me. Everyone seems to feel like they KNOW whether or not she manipulated her daughter's genes. But we left it intentionally ambiguous. I think people are confused by the flashback where Karen was manipulating her own gene sample (outside her body). To our surprise, they seem to be assuming that was her manipulating Rhea. But it's a memory that's part of her decision-making process. Then we leave her, trying to decide, before she later tells Mal that she did the right thing. I'm not saying whether she did or didn't manipulate the gene... but I KNOW we didn't show it on screen.
1. How old is Ryan Choi?
We haven't laid eyes on him yet, so NO SPOILERS.
Hello,
I want to say that I'm a big fan of the shows you've made from Gargoyles to Young Justice and I'd like to ask a few questions.
1. Are Plastic Man, Hardware and Batwoman part of Batman's team? Batwoman obviously and I think Plastic Man is due to his history with Batman.
1A. Why would Hardware be on Batman's team? Does he have history with Batman in the comics as well because I don't know him much.
2. What's Metamorpho's designation for Batman's team.
3. If I were to ask about the character designs for this season, should I ask you or Phil?
4. What was Troia like when she was part of the Team?
5. Did she ever wear stealth tech?
1. I assume, given the date of your post, you mean as of mid-season of Outsiders. In which case, the answer is yes to all three.
1A. No spoilers.
2. I don't give out designation numbers here.
3. Depends on the question, I guess.
4. No spoilers.
5. Ever? Probably. I haven't thought about it.
Hi! I have some questions about Bart Allen:
1: Does Bart have any trauma regarding his past?
2: Is the personality we see him have all the time his real personality?
3: Does Bart ever feel uncomfortable about becoming KF the way he did?
Thank you!
1. I'll leave that to your interpretation.
2. "ALL the time"?
3. He said he did. I'd take his word for it.
Hi, Greg. Hope you're having a good day.
In "Unknown Factors" we see Wyynde and Aquaman go to Granny's house to rescue Nightwing and Black Lightning.
1. Since Atlantis is clearly not near Hollywood, did they use a zeta-tube (perhaps the one seen to get Dolphin to Poseidonis) to get to the U.S.?
1a. Did Wyynde receive an A designation for this (A-43)?
2. Bonus: Do Mera and Artur have A designations since they had to get to Central City somehow for Iris's playdate?
I am having a good day, so far. Thanks.
1. Yes.
1a. Wyynde did receive an A-Designation. No spoilers for the A-#.
2. They do.
1. When did Arrowette join the Team?

5. Rocket joined the Justice League in Team Year Five.
Hi, Greg! Outstanding episode today. Can't wait till next week! Hope Season 4 is going well.
1. How old is Evelyn Fox?
By the END of TEAM YEAR FOUR...
1. Evelyn Fox is 31.
2. Young Justice: Phantoms is going very well, thanks for asking. We have 15 episodes in the can. Seven more in post. The last four are all being animated by Studio Mir. Pre-production is completely done.
In the episode "Triptych", are the two officers arresting Simon Stagg supposed to Harvey Bullock and Renee Montoya? Do you have any info on them in your lore bible, or were they just quick cameos? Stuff like how old they are, how long they've been police officers, etc? Is Renee a lesbian in this continuity? Thanks for your time sir!
1. Yep.
2. Both.
3. At the END of Team Year Eight, Harvey Bullock is 52, and Renee Montoya is 29.
4. Not going to reveal how long they've been police officers.
5. I should say NO SPOILERS to this, but it feels a bit silly not to state the obvious: yes, Renee is a lesbian. We're not going to REDUCE the LGBTQ+ representation on our series.
1. How old is Zviad Baazovi?
2. How old is Frederick DeLamb?
By the END of Team Year THREE...
1. Zviad Baazovi is 23.

3. J. Anson Schwartz is 68.
4. Celia Windward is 16.
5. Patrick Maguire is 45.
Hi, Greg, hope you're well. I was just browsing the unanswered questions queue when I saw a bunch of valid questions that had all been crammed into one post. Since it violated the guidelines, I'm pretty sure it'll get deleted. So just in case, I thought I'd split 'em up and ask them myself.
As of the start of Season 3 (or January 1st, Team Year Eight, whichever way you measure it):
1. How old is Bash Bashford?
2. How old is Bethany Lee?
3. How old is Scorpia A'Daire?
3a. How is Scorpia related to Whisper?
4. How old is Angel O'Day?
As of the END of Team Year Eight...
1. Bash Bashford is 41.
2. Bethany Lee is 27
3. Scorpia A'Daire is 23.
3a. No spoilers. (What the hell? They're sisters.)
4. Angel O'Day is 14.
Are Dale Gunn and Casey Klebba married in the Earth-16 universe?
Yep.
1. Dumb question: what happened that led to Bear punching Metron?
2. Given how he feels about Kaldur being Aquaman, is it possible that Black Manta might not approve of his sexuality either?
1. No spoilers. (But have you met Metron?)
2. I don't see any connection between those two things. But whether or not Manta approves would be a spoiler.
1. How long has Jefferson Pierce been fighting crime as Black Lightning prior to Season Three?
Black Lightning debuted as a hero in Team Year Two.
I've been curious about this for a while, since we know that Garth showed up to fight off the Reach in the S2 finale, but were Garth and Troia still operating as heroes by the end of Season 2? Or were they already UN ambassadors? Because Dick implies in S3 that they left the Team to become ambassadors, and they were both gone by S2.
I don't think that was instantaneous.
How old is Gilotina?
By the end of Team Year Nine, Gilotina is biologically 16.
In "Princes All" when Batman quits the Justice League with a few fellow members, Wonder Woman yells out "Bruce, please!" to the entire room.
1. Does this mean that everyone present (Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Captain Marvel, Red Tornado, Doctor Fate, Plastic Man, Black Lightning, Zatanna, Rocket, Aquaman (Kaldur), Hardware, Katana, Batwoman, Steel, and Miss Martian) was already aware of Batman's secret identity? Or are several Leaguers now just aware of Batman's first name?
1. They were all aware.
1. How did you decide on Wyynde for Kaldur's romantic interest? Were you set on it being a former Atlantean purist?
2. I'm curious as to when Kaldur first started to realize when he was attracted to more than just women. Do you picture him struggling with it or was he very open minded about himself from the beginning?
3. When you were writing season 1 and 2, was there a storyline or character you wanted to showcase Kaldur's sexuality with, but couldn't?
4. How did Wyynde and Kaldur meet? Who asked who out? If you're planning on showing this at some point then I get the #NoSpoilers
1. Brandon and I discussed it, and Wyynde seemed like the right choice.
1a. That was one factor, but not the only one.
2. Brandon and Khary and I have had many discussions about this. We think, generally, that Atlantis is way more open-minded than the surface world. But as for Kaldur's story (and mindset) specifically... NO SPOILERS.
3. Not particularly. We were playing the long game with Kaldur. He was in love with Tula. He and Raquel dated briefly between Seasons One and Two. But it would take time for Kaldur and Wyynde to find each other as a couple.
4. Well, they met at the Conservatory of Sorcery. They were classmates there before Kaldur became Aqualad. As for the details of how they became a couple... again, no spoilers.
i know it doesnt matter but where was garfield during 3x20
I'll leave that to your imagination for now. Otherwise, no spoilers.
Hello, Greg.
I want to ask how old is Joan Garrick? You had previously said that she was 88 at the end of Season 1. However, recently at SDCC, you said she was 98, when she died.
If I said that at SDCC, I misspoke. Joan died at age 95 or 96 - that is, she would have been 96 by the end of Team Year Eight, had she survived that long. I haven't set the actual day and month of her birth.
R.I.P. Joan Williams Garrick.
How old is Courtney Whitmore?
At the end of Team Year Nine, Courtney is 16.
Mr. Weisman,
In "Quiet Conversations," we see the Source Wall for the first time in the Young Justice universe. Considering what happened to it in "Dark Knights: Metal," how can it still remain intact on the show?
We're a different (DC Universe-16) continuity.
Blown away by this episode, Greg! Great job!
1. How old is Cullen Row?
2. How old is Unnamed-Meta-Teen-A41?
3. How old is Gabrielle Dau's mother?
4. How old is Gabrielle Dau's cousin?
By the END of TEAM YEAR NINE...
1. Cullen is 13.
2. Delphis is 19.
3. Madia Daou is 35.
4. Samad Daou is 20.
Hey! So what was that spell Zatanna used to transport Klarion to the Tower of Fate? As in, the non-reversed form of the words? I couldn't catch it.
"Rehtaf, ediug ym yenruoj hguorht Sâetaf Yloh Hkna!"
How old is Lia Briggs?
At the end of Team Year Eight, Lia is 16.
After Season 2 was over, you confirmed that the designations 27 and 28 were assigned shortly after the season came to a close. We know that there are well over 28 Leaguers by the time we pick up with Season 3, so...
1. Are the characters you intended to give those designations to in 2013 the ones who did end up getting them when you revisited the series canon for Season 3?
If so, 2. Were you always planning for Kaldur to join the Justice League shortly after Season 2 concluded?
1. Yep.
2. Yep.
Hello Greg!
I wanted to ask a couple questions!
1) Why did Zatanna choose Artemis as the person to go with her to see her father?
2) How long has Zatanna been in her magician career and weill we ever see it on screen?
Thank you!
1. They're close friends.
2. Since before her dad became Doctor Fate.
2a. No spoilers.
this isn't a question but in nightmare monkeys when gar ask the monkey god why he sound like wally he should of said im no therapist but if i have to guess you never head me talk and you mind came up with a person that you close to
That's as good an interpretation as any.
Hi, Greg. Hope youâre well.
Because of some of the issues surrounding the Captain Marvel name, we know that Billy Batsonâs alter ego has had to be credited as Shazam in the later seasons, despite being Captain Marvel on Earth-16. Do these name issues affect your ability to be able to use Lieutenant and Sergeant Marvel on Young Justice? Do you purposely stray from the Marvel family so as not to upset pre-established canon?
The word "Marvel" is currently off-limits to us. This definitely threw us for a loop in Season Three, but we think we've since come up with a rationalization for Cap's name change. So whatever plans we have/had may proceed.
I always admired YJ for its diversity and was very excited to see a character like Halo, someone who's close to my ethnic background, represented.
But I have been utterly disappointed. More than that, I'm disgusted.
The way you guys have graphically killed her several times on screen is appalling. Yes, I realize she comes back, but to see a WOC go through such violent trauma again and again is damaging to audiences - particularly those who are like her. It is a common trope to violently traumatize and kill women and POC in comics and I thought YJ would be above that. Apparently not.
And then to find out that the actual Arab girl has really been dead since episode 1 and she's nothing but an empty husk for the motherbox...so she's not actual representation at all. She's not a real person.
I was one of the fans who rallied for YJ to return for years and now I will never support this show again. This honestly broke my heart a little.
Glad you got to feel progressive for using a woman in a hijab. I'm sure you're patting yourself on the back for it and won't actually care how people of that background feel.
I'm truly sorry that the character doesn't work for you.
I wish you'd continue to give us a chance throughout the end of Season Three and into Season Four. By July 24th, 2019, Halo's story was far from over. We probably did overdo it on the violent deaths. But the long-term plan was to show a girl (of color) who went from being a victim to a hero. I think we ultimately succeeded in that, but if it didn't/doesn't work for you, I understand.
As for Gabrielle being dead... well, that was built into the character Halo that we adapted.
But again, her story isn't over. And her hijab wasn't an arbitrary or cynical choice. In fact, the only thing in your post that seems unfair to me is your presumption that we were patting ourselves on the back in some cynical manner. We do care. We may fail. But that doesn't mean we're not trying. We've been working with the Muslim Public Affairs Council on Halo's character and others. They seem pretty happy with where we're taking the character long term. Maybe we didn't get there fast enough for you. But, again, I'd love for you to give us and Halo a second chance.
In young justice outsiders episode 19 it is said that beast boy is a emancipation minor . Why did his stepdad Steve Dayton let Garfield become a emancipation minor ?
Gar sued to become an emancipated minor. We don't know whether or not Dayton fought him on this, but if he did, he clearly lost the case.
Greg, what are Traci Thruston/Thirteen powers do they only cause bad luck or does she have greater mystical abilities?
I think what you see on the show speaks for itself.
By the time that you see this question, season 4 will probably have concluded, but I'll take my chances. I love Young Justice - thank you so much for this amazing show!
I have a few questions about "Elder Wisdom", which has just been released on DC Universe:
1) Is Troia an Amazon by birth or is she from man's world? She bears a strong resemblance to Wonder Woman and she referenced Hippolyta ("Mother") so I'm guessing that the former is true, but I wonder if you could confirm this now that she has had a prominent appearance in Young Justice, please.
2a) Does Troia have the alias Donna Troy in Young Justice?
2b) Has she *ever* had this alias on Earth-16? Troia is quite an unusual name so I wonder whether it stems directly from the name Donna Troy somehow, even on Earth-16.
3) We've only ever seen Garth in one outfit, even when he was Tempest in the Young Justice: Legacy game. Likewise, we've only seen one look for Troia at this stage, but is it also her costume from her time as a member of the Team?
4) I hope it's all right if I ask this question as well, please: do you still have plans to include Mary Bromfield in Young Justice? I know that you've said that you wanted to introduce both her and Troia in season 2, so that's why I'm asking about Mary even though this is a spoiler request. I hope that Mary will still get her due, whether it's in the final stretch of season 3 or in season 4. Hoping for some Marvel/Shazam Family love at some point in Young Justice.
Thank you so much for reading my submission! :)
Well, Season Four hasn't dropped as of this writing, though we do have fourteen episodes in the can, seven more in post-production and five being animated overseas, with all pre-production complete.
1. No spoilers.
2. As of Season Three she isn't using the name Donna Troy. No spoilers as to whether she ever did.
3. No spoilers.
4. It's not a spoiler to say that we still want to include her when it makes sense to.
You've always said that when adapting a character you like to make sure you stick to their core identity and values. What about Halo is sticking to her core character, since the Earth-16 version isn't really like the comics version.
To our thinking, our Halo is just like the comic version in every significant way. What seems different to you, beyond the obvious of her being Quraci and the fact that we exchanged her Gabrielle Doe/Daou and Violet Harper names?
