I watched "Misplaced" yesterday morning and let me just say that it was simply awesome. I truly love Young Justice. Now, I have two questions about this episode:
1. When I saw Teekl transform into that huge saber-teeth behemoth, I expected Wolf to come down and attack. Seeing only Superboy face off with the cat didn't disappoint me, but it did leave me wondering about Wolf's wherabouts. Where was he and why didn't Conner bring him along?
2. So in one scene, Nabu seems to be losing his stability because the helmet has been split, and we know that since the item in question was shown to be present in both worlds. So just out of curiosity, what would have happened if someone in the adult's dimension had worn it and kept it on AFTER the two worlds merged back while Zatanna did the same?
1. Uh, maybe Wolf was on his own mission. (Honestly, the episode was just already crowded enough, don't you think?)
2. Any consistent reader of this site knows I'm not big on hypotheticals.
Hi Greg,
I was wondering how much can be shared between your show and the WB DC direct to videos. For instance, as the movies "Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths" and "Justice League: Doom" share an executive producer and lead character designer with Young Justice, could you theoretically utilize character designs from those two movies? I imagine that even if you could, you would prefer to tailor unique versions for the show; but I'm curious what can be reused.
We can - and occasionally do - reuse elements from past WB productions (usually things like cars or paper clips or other props, but also the occasional background design or pedestrian), as long as they fit the style of the series. This is done to save money and time, so that our designers can focus on elements that are more unique to our series.
Hi Greg.
A couple of questions about Misplaced:
Nabu desired Zatanna as a host because of her youth and magical ability.
Zatara persuaded Nabu to take him instead with his comment that he was at his peak of ability. Would Nabu's ideal host be someone both young and powerful? As a Lord of Order, would a potential host's virtue or goodness make a difference in his decision? Do youth and virtue/goodness amplify Fate's power?
With Captain Marvel, I liked your emphasis on Billy and his qualities of intelligence, determination, bravery, and loyalty. Cap is a powerhouse, but has shown the playfulness and enthusiasm of a child, not to mention a love of junk food. Billy is a child that showed the maturity of an adult, not to mention a love of the ladies.
As Billy ages, can the Wisdom of Solomon and Courage of Achilles bridge the gap between him and his alter ego? In other words, could those gifts somehow carry over to Billy without his transforming?
Thanks for taking my question.
Youth probably mattered, but to an immortal entity the difference between Zatanna and Zatara's ages may have seemed insignificant.
I'll leave the goodness question to your interpretation.
As for Billy, SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
Hi Greg,
I've been wondering about the inception of "Young Justice." Specifically, when was the show named? Was there any point at which it was "Untitled DC Animation Show" or was it "Young Justice" from the get-go? And did you choose the name "Young Justice," or was the project given to you with the name already in place?
Relatedly, did you consider at any point having The Team on the show be called "Young Justice," or was that always meant to just be the title of the show?
Thanks!
This is MOSTLY ASKED AND ANSWERED, but, yes, the project was handed us as "Young Justice" though I suppose if we had wanted to change it, we might have had the opportunity to suggest alternatives. But none of us wanted to change it.
We did have a discussion about whether the Team should be called "Young Justice" - but Sam, Brandon, Kevin and I all agreed that it would be cooler to make that ONLY the title of the series and not of the Team. At least, given the tone of our series.
Okay, just curious about this based on suspicion? In the episode "Infiltrator", was the the cafe girl in the Wayne Tech building a n existing character?
Not that I know of.
Hey, just wanted to say that that new episode was amazing! I watched it over and over aagin. I couldn't find many complaints about it. But one thing i wanted to ask was: at the end, some of the team reunited happily with their parents. They did not show Robin and Batman. :( could you maybe confirm if they had a talk or something that wasnt shown? Or is that too emotional for the big bad Bat? Also, were Robin and Artemis seriously injured in the fight? I mean, they were knocked out for most of it and when Robin woke up, he was holding his side and talking as if in pain. But back at the cave, they were both carrying boxes. Just wanted to know if their injuries were something we'll see/will effect them in the next ep (broken ribs etc.)
Thank you, and this is one of the best shows i have ever seen!
1. There just isn't room to show everything and everyone. But you can be sure that both were very glad to see each other.
2. Not seriously. Though of course, most super-hero shows play a little fast and loose with that sort of thing.
Someone already asked how old is Hawkman, so I'll ask:
How old is Hawkwoman?
How old is Felix Faust?
How old is Blackbriar Thorn?
How old is Wizard?
Also, what happened to the opening sequence in Misplaced?
As of the end of Season One:
1. Hawkwoman is 28.
2. I didn't set an age for Felix Faust, but he's older than a normal human lifespan.
3. Ditto for Blackbriar Thorn.
4. Ditto for Wizard.
5. Our main title has been truncated to make room for those fun DC shorts as part of DC Nation. (And before you ask, it does NOT upset me. I think creating a destination around DC Nation more than makes up for the loss of our main title.)
Do you think there's a way Disney and Marvel could be convinced to consistently pay royalties (including royalties paid to estates of deceased creators) on reprinted material like DC Comics does?
Horror comics legend Steve Bissette publicly announced that he is boycotting all Marvel products due to Marvel not paying any money to Jack Kirby's family (and keep in mind that Steve has noted that DC still pays him royalties for reprints of his Swamp Thing stories, and that he and John Totleban got paid when their co-creation John Constantine was adapted into that movie with Keanu Reeves.), there's been speculation that reprints of Alan Moore's Marvelman/Miracleman have been held up by by the fact the artists (included Rick Veitch, who has had trouble with Marvel in the past) didn't sign away their rights, and I think Don Rosa of Disney Ducks comics fame has refused to work for Disney again because they don't pay him royalties for reprints of his works.
Any ideas on how to get Disney/Marvel to remedy these situations?
First off, I can't confirm or deny any of your statements. I have no idea what Marvel and/or Disney and/or DC is or isn't providing royalty-wise. Second of all, I'm not a lawyer.
One might easily argue that I should be more educated on this subject, but one can't deny the fact that I'm NOT. And I'm just not going to speak to issues I'm ignorant of.
Hi! I love Young Justice, and I'm glad it's finally back. I don't even mind waking up earlier on Saturdays than I normally would. I think it's especially wonderful how you can see Superboy's development through the little things he does, like smiling at the little kid with the Superman shirt. It's subtle, but it's noticeable enough to be very effective, and I think it's good that the extent of his development isn't all in the things he says.
I have a couple of questions, too.
It might be more obvious to someone who's read more comics than I have, but on Earth-16, is Black Canary Dinah Drake or Dinah Lance?
Also, I noticed that in Misplaced, the opening was shortened even more. That made me kind of sad, and I figure it wasn't your choice, but Cartoon Network's. Maybe because of the DC Nation shorts? I was wondering if you think it'll be a permanent thing, but I understand if you have no idea either.
Thanks! :D
This Canary is Dinah Lance, the daughter of Larry Lance and Dinah Drake Lance.
hey :) :)
first off i want to thank you for all the great episodes of young justice. they are all so fantastic :)
i just have one quick question, right now how fast can kid flash run?
Fast, but not nearly as fast as the Flash.
I'm not asking if the backstory with Zatanna's mother is the same in Young Justice as it is in DC Comics, just asking if you're aware of what it is in DC Comics (i.e. that she's dead and was a witch named Sindella).
Yes, I'm aware.
In "Misplaced" when in Paris the timezone said CEST, but Daylight Savings Time ends in France in October, not November. So shouldn't the timezone have been CET? Or do the nations on Earth-16 observe Daylight Savings at the same time?
I did very careful research on the timezones and the dates and when they switched over. I'm not denying there's a possibility I messed up. I have before and I will again. But it seems VERY unlikely to me that I made an error, given how careful I was being. So are you sure about ALL your facts?
This is a Gargoyles a question.
Where did the Canmores get their resources for their weapons and technology? Obviously, they amassed wealth over the centuries, but how did they do it? What businesses? The original Hunter was an Assassin for Duncan. Did any of the other Hunters do assassin/mercenary work since it involves the same skill set as hunting gargoyles"
After Gillecomgain, the Hunters were members of the Royal family. Beyond that, SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
First off, huge fan of Gargoyles and really impressed that you're still so invested in the show.
Right, now the question - I've had a poke through the archives and can't seem to find anything quite like this so: Do other mythological creatures (eg dragons, manticores, unicorns, etc) exist in the Gargoyles Universe, or are the legends simply related to various Gargates or Children of Oberon.
As a follow up, if any of these species do exist are they intelligent, or just animals?
Generally, the answer is the latter, but the question is too big to be answered definitively. It's hard to answer something that gives examples, but still asks me to answer in theory with a single yes or no to simultaneously cover each and every fantasy species ever.
Hi Greg! I just watched "Misplaced" and it was amazing!
When I first read the Synopsis I though of the Justice League Unlimited episode "Kid Stuff", but your take is so much more interesting; I particularly liked the twist in the middle with the dual realities.
Second, thanks for finally answering the question on the League knowledge of Billy's dual identity (I knew Batman knew!) and I admit I Was looking forward to the Team to find out Billy's real age, hopefully they will star treating him better.
Third: Poor Zatanna, I think it's worse when you have to mourn someone that isn't actually dead.
Fourth, I like Riddler look, pretty nice, and pretty low key compare to other versions, although I Will miss the Bowler Hat. And the Light has Starro now, gives me goosebumps.
And Finally the date: November 5th! That's my birthday! Lots of things seem to happen in my birthday (remember, remember, the 5th of November).
Anyway, thanks for an amazing episode, and I can't wait for what's next (I've read the synopses, You Are Amazing!)
Thanks! (Of course, I had a lot of help.)
Hello, Greg, I would first like to say you are doing a fantastic job on Young Justice, but I have a couple questions:
1) You have stated before that the Riddler is not in Arkham Asylum as he is not insane, is this your opinion on the character in general, or just the Earth-16 incarnation?
2) Why did you decide to start with such an enormous threat as The Light for the first season of YJ, where a single one if the leaders could easily be the big threat of the season on their own? This isn't a critque, just curiousity.
1. I can only speak for the Earth-16 version, but obviously the opinions that Brandon and I held about the characters walking in, influenced how we chose to depict them.
2. We have a story to tell.
could you tell me a little more about the young justice video game? (without spoilers)
Not really.
I CAN reassure folks that we're working with the makers of the game to assure it's in continuity. That it tells an important story from during the five-year gap, but that everything you need to know to enjoy the television series will be within the series itself. But if you ENJOY the world we're building, then I encourage you to pick up the game (when the time comes), as well as our companion comic book. Both media will help to fill out the world and tell more exciting stories with the great characters from the television series.

I know I'm probably forgetting some folks, and I REALLY apologize! If you send me a reminder, I'll pimp you in another post!
more of a comment. brilliant twist halfway through YJ's "misplaced"!
Thanks!
#1. First of all, misplaced is great. There are many parts of this that I absolutely adore. You never end to amaze me, the quality of the show is awesome. I'm truly grareful for this show.
#2. This is a question about Disordered. I know its a little late so im sorry. When Robin had his therapy session, Canary didn't say anything. Thought what was she thinking?
#3. Thank you for all the hard work you put into this show! Its the one show on tv that I actually like.
1. Thanks.
2. I think I'll leave that to your interpretation.
3. Thanks again!
I was going to ask if the team knew Captain Marvel was really a 10 year old kid, but it seems last episode answered my question. It's like you guys are psychic. But here's a question that's been on my mind for a while, did Riddler's escape his own doing or was his escape the actual goal of the attempted breakout?
One of the (more important prioritized) goals.
Heya Greg! I know your focus has been on Young Justice lately (as it should be) but hopefully you wonât mind kicking it a little old-school and reading fans gush about Gargoyles. This is more of a ramble than a question but hopefully you wonât mind.
I have a good friend that lives in another state that is fairly arduous driving distance away so we only see each other in person every couple months. Naturally one of our main ways of staying in touch is talking via IM. And one thing we do is choose shows one of us has never seen (mostly her, but occasionally me) and watch episodes at the same time we talk to each other, so weâre watching âtogetherâ even if weâre not actually together. We actually have a standing list of things we want to go through this way. And a short while ago my friend chose to start Gargoyles. We blew through all five parts of Awakening in one session and I thought you might get a kick out of seeing some choice bits of our conversation. (And yes my friend did give permission for me to share this with you.) Thereâs going to be more of what she has to say than me because I feel like reading me responding to her reactions with, âWhy yes that IS awesome and part of the reason I love this showâ would get old after awhile. The âchoice bitsâ are still pretty long, but hopefully you wonât mind too terribly.
Quick background. We are both of the female persuasion. Iâm 24 and have a B.A. in English and am going back to school in the fall for a Library Science degree. Sheâs 20 and a Creative Writing major at a University that feels there is very clear divide between âliteratureâ and âentertainmentâ and that all genre fiction falls into the latter category by default.
Needless to say, since both of us are fans of Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Animationâ¦we disagree with that. A lot.
Iâm going slightly out of order, starting with her reaction to seeing the theme song before getting into the actual episode stuff. Iâll use [] to indicate me making a comment or an edit after the fact. âJâ indicates my comments. âMâ is my friend.
J
Oh and THEME SONG OF EPICNESS
M

J
Awesome visuals are awesome
M
Hey wait a minute
I've totally heard this before

Redhead needs a haircut
I really like their relationship though so far
It seems rooted in a mutual respect

M
"You are the betrayer?"
"All of my kind are dead"
M
"YOU LYING SCUM!"
Uh o

"Pay a man enough and he'll walk barefoot into hell."
M
He has a HELICOPTER

J
I think the goatee and ponytail are sexy. So clearly I love him more than you do and should have him.
M
Heeeeeeeeeeeeee
I'll take his tech guy happily
J
Yeah you can't have him either :P
M
Awwwwww

J
I can't tell you :P
No spoilers remember
M
Heeeeeee
Because if I don't I will cry
M
This may be an off guess but are any of the present-charries descended from the past-charries?
But you can't answer that either
J
No spoilers LOL
This is fuuuun
M
:P
Seeing all my wild guesses
M
Ooooh

M
This show has been really good about engaging right from the pilot
So far it hasn't really been talk-heavy
[Episode 3]
M
Owen is totally Magus
J
I think they're both voiced by Jeff Bennet
M
They're totally related in some way
J
Elisa is quipping a la Buffy before Buffy
M
But Goliiath wil save her
I love the Gargoyles
It's a nice deviation from what you'd expect
J
How so?
M
They're very respectful
M
And not all grrrrr
They have morals and principles they go by and they're fairly peaceful
M
Heeeee hundreds of spells
On a floppy
M
My 1TB talisman can kick its ass

I really really like this show so far
M
AND IS THAT THE REDHEAD LADY?
I saw poof
I'm so confused
M

Honestly I didn't think I would.
J
Am I not awesome at showing you things you'd like?
M
I mean I didnât think I'd hate it
Heeeeeee
You aaare
M
Detective lady is wearing mom jeans
M
I really like that concept
J
Which concept?
M
Of not having names for things
M
And they utilize a large cast very well by having a few characters around at a time and having their different reactions ot the same world
M
We get expositoon that way and viewers aren't bogged down or feel the need to spread their interest too thin
Just "oh hey going on a NY adventure"
[When the Trio fight off the gang after saving Brendan and Margot]
M
Oooh interesting
That the guys react with fear initially and then charge
This show is really well-crafted
M
I mean you could just classify this as 'low-brow kids' entertainment' but it's really more than that
It's a beautiful work of art and storytelling that's fun and fanciful
J
Exactly.
J
There's so much work put into it and it shows.
M
And it has layered, deep conflict
Oh yes
J
IMO it's art
M
It's wonderful
Yes.
Exactly.
Very good, show!
Tranqs take a while to take effect
M
But yeah [censored] 'high art.' This is art
J
It's got all the complexity of a Shakespearean drama. It just happens to be animated and feature fantastic elements.
M
Oh yeah. I agree 100%
[Episode 4]
M
This show handles exposition beautifully
J
It does
Seriously Greg Weisman is the MASTER of set-up and payoff.
M
It really works.
M
THIS IS WHAT I SHOULD BE LEARNING IN FICTION CLASS
DARNIT
[Re Elisa hiding from the goons]
M
Uhhhhho oh
Way to make the tension rise
That's beautiful
M
THAT'S HOW YOU DO PACING FICTION CLASS
M
I rather like the music for this show too
M
I'm still kind of enamored by the whole show
It does action sequences very well too
M
Greg Weisman is incredibly talented and I bet my fiction prof would hate his guts
J
Oh yeah. The physicality is great. Not overdone and very realistic.
[Re Demona and Goliathâs reunion]
M
That's an evil smile
I don't like that
Awwww wing hug
M
That's so BEAUTIFUL
SEEE LITERARY FICTION?
SEE WHAT YOU CAN DO?
M
SEE THAT THIS IS NOT BULL[CRAP]?
J
I totally wrote a paper for a Shakespeare course that involved Gargoyles. I got an A in that class. :)
M
You are amazing
J
They said KILL
M
THEY DID
J
Whooooo!
[Episode 5]
J
Do not mess with old guys and dogs
Especially if they're Gargoyles
M
Hee
J
And hi G-rated version of Lethal Weapon line
M
TRAAAIN
M
And that is why you back up your files
[Re the Blimp being on fire and falling]
J
And that would not be a scene post 9-11
M
No it would not
J
I think there'd be a lot less stuff blowing up in general
M
Yeah
[Again re Demona and Goliath]
M
THIS NEEDS TO BE THE MODEL FOR FICTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
GOD WHY IS THIS SO AMAZING
M
Awwwww Goliiiiath
J
Look at Lexington his laptop
M
Heeeeeeee
J
That has like 250 MB memory LOL
J
Hi Demona
You want to marry her too yes?
M
No
J
Really?
M
I don't like her hair :P
*is shallow*
J
Aside from the hair :P
M

Hopefully that put a smile on your face. We will be watching the rest of Gargoyles, and eventually W.I.T.C.H, Spectacular Spidey, and Young Justice.
I did want to ask, would you be interested in reading more of what we say as we watch?
Subsequent conversation snippets will probably be shorter, but I understand youâre very busy and that Ask Greg can get backlogged. Iâd only want to continue sending this kind of ramble if itâs something that you would enjoy reading, as a small way to pay you back for the excellent entertainment you provide. Iâd never want it to be a chore or something you feel you have to slog through.
So yeah. Hope you enjoyed! Please continue making awesome shows so we can keep watching. :)
I would be interested - though even admitting that fact makes me sound conceited. It's like, "Hey, post praise!" But basically, what I mean to say is, "Hey, post praise!"
But of course, in the interest of accuracy, I should point out that in your responses to her you really give all the credit to me, and that's, well, silly. Michael Reaves wrote all five scripts that you were praising. Frank Paur supervised all the storyboards and editing. (And those two talented guys are just the TIP of the Gargoyles iceberg.) I'm not saying I didn't contribute. I like to think I contributed a lot to both script and picture, but it was NEVER a one man show.
The world premiere of YOUNG JUSTICE: INVASION (i.e. EPISODE 201, "Happy New Year") airs tomorrow morning, Saturday, April 28 and repeats on Sunday morning, April 29.
If you've been enjoying the series up to this point, you do NOT want to miss the start of the Invasion. Big doings. Bigger revelations. New characters. New voice actors, including Mae Whitman ("Arrested Development", "Avatar, the Last Airbender") as Wonder Girl, Michael Trucco ("Battlestar Galactica") as Adam Strange and Tim Curry (too many credits to name) as G. Gordon Godfrey. Seriously, on YJ:I, things start hot and never cool off! Don't miss a minute.
PLEASE NOTE: On some (but maybe not all cable services) the show HAS officially been retitled "YOUNG JUSTICE: INVASION", so be prepared to set your DVRs accordingly. Check local listings for times, etc.
has the Big Bang actually occured yet? You know, Dakota's big gas explosion that created hundreds of super heroes or villains? Seeing as Dakota is appearing....its a good question
SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
Dear Greg, why does Harm speak in third person?
Thanks, Chelsea
He's kind of a freak.
Has lex luthor or bruce wayne ever been mayors of their cities and does lex have an criminal record?
1. No.
2. His record is clean.
First I want to say that I love Young Justice but I have few questions
1. Will there be any completly original heroes and/or villians
2. Will there be any character that have only been animated and not in the comics, for example See-More from the Teen Titans series
3. What exactly are rocket's powers
4. Is the team a strictly sidekick team or can idividual teen heroes join
5. We have seen the covert, snow, and regular suits for the team are there any other suits
1. Terror Twins, anyone?
2. There are certainly characters that originated in cartoons. Can't be sure if they've all made it into the comics or not.
3. Flight and force fields.
4. There are no rules in that sense.
5. There's the 70s disco versions.
I'm not exactly sure if this is a spoiler question, but here it goes:
Dick appears to be slowly transitioning into the role of leader of the group, stepping up to lead the team when Aqualad was felled to the "invaders", reassuring Zatanna when she doubted her abilities in "Misplaced", encouraging a fearful Artemis during the bout against Red Volcano. My question is this:
1) The look that Robin gives Aqualad when he vehemently denies that any of his team members are traitors - is that suspicion or shock over his naiveté?
On an unrelated note,
2) In "Misplaced", when Billy utters the name of immortal Shazam, does the plane teleport into another dimension, or is it merely destroyed?
1. It's the seeds of doubt.
2. Neither, at that moment. He is transported to the adult dimension. The plane stayed right where it was, i.e. moving through the air of the kid dimension.
Hey Greg, I have to admit seeing Billy's uncle a little worried/scared was the best part of Misplaced for me. After seeing him act a little cold towards Billy on Alpha Male, but show that he really cared for Billy, honestly, satisfied me. 1. By the way, why did you guys make Billy "not homeless" anymore? Thanks for your time and keep up the good work.
I don't know where you got the idea that Dudley was cold to Billy in "Alpha Male". I certainly didn't get that at all.
1. Urchins in the old fashioned sense don't exist. You have to go someplace pretty dark to have a homeless kid on his or her own in today's world. Billy doesn't seem THAT dark to us.
Klarion can be kill only his cat kill
I... uh...
Chaos can't be killed.
Why did Chad Lowe took over Rob Lowe as Captain Marvel?
Rob was no longer available, and Chad - with Rob's blessing - kindly stepped in.
Paraphrased Antiyonder's appeal from the Comment Room:
"The Young Justice Wiki (http://youngjustice.wikia.com) incorporates info from Ask Greg, such as the often repeated age questions. So if you're (just talking to folks in general who tend to do so) going to ask for an age, look at the character articles on the wiki to see if it's there."
Good plan.
A question about Atlantis:
Have you wondered that in a land with names like Orin, Orm, Mera, Tula, Kaldur'ahm, and Sha'lain'a, the name Garth sticks out like a sore thumb? Unlike any of the former names, it sounds so un-Greek (or un-Atlantean).
PS: I really like this incarnation of Garth. I hope to see more of him in future episodes.
I don't know what does or doesn't qualify as Atlantean except what I learned MUST qualify based on the sources. Does Garth sound more or less "Atlantean" than Ronal or Blubber or Lori? I guess that's up to the ear of the beholder.
This is an addition to my previous post - I accidentally missed my first paragraph when I copied and pasted it:
To begin, I wanted to say that I really like "Young Justice" and what amazes me about the show in particular is how heavily serialized it is as an animated program. That is to say, very few US animated series attempt the same level of continuity and on-going storytelling. So, my questions here will mostly be about the serialized nature of the show.
Uh. Okay. Thanks.
First of all, Iâve noticed that the approach as a whole is to make standalone/arc episodes. In other episodes, nearly every single episode so far has a self-contained storyline that additionally builds on the longer running plotlines.
Why did you choose to approach the series in such a way in particular? Was there perhaps talk that the series might become too complex for audiences to follow?
During the showâs development stages, was there ever consideration of making the show a more standalone show in general? Or of making more two-part episodes that tackle a single standalone/arc plotline?
Or conversely, having multiple ongoing plots unfold over the course of one episode without resolution, leading to a cliffhanger ending and necessitating more episodes to bring everything to an end (I think itâs referred to as the âflexi-narrativeâ structure)?
Has there ever been any pressure (from the network, DC or outside forces) to de-serialize the show and make more standalone episodes that don't connect to the main arc of the season at all?
Do you ever feel that having only 22-minutes to tell a story hurts the quality of an episode, or forces you to rush through material?
Do you know pretty much every major plot beat of the season when you started writing the episodes or are certain key plot points figured out along the way?
Have you ever been in a situation where you decided to take the main story in a bit of different direction and so had to go back you to earlier episodes and re-write them to make sure everything fits together seamlessly?
Given that the first season so far has begun many different plot points, can we expect all of them to be resolved by the end of the first season or will certain threads carry over to next season and beyond? In other words, are the arcs self-contained or will they span multiple seasons?
In the future, please NUMBER your questions.
1. I think it's the best of both worlds to have coherent stand-alone adventures (great yarns) that still forward an overall arc. That way anyone can enter at any time and pick up what's going on.
1a. I pitch my shows as "Episodic but Sequential" because that's how I prefer to work. No one's forcing me to do it this way.
2. No.
2a. No.
3. No.
4. No.
5. Not to rush, but we almost always feel like we're leaving out things that would add richness to stories and characters. I'd love to do hour episodes, which is NOT the same as doing two-parters.
6. We work it all out in advance.
7. Occasionally, we go back and adjust little details here and there.
8. Almost everything is on-going. But I hope episode 26 left everyone with an appropriate amount of open-ended closure. Also some things will be addressed in our companion comic-book.
Dear Mr. Weisman,
Thank you for all the wonderful work you've done from Gargoyles, to Spiderman, to Young Justice. Been a fan for years.
1) From your experience, what was more enjoyable to work with? Working on a show that was completely yours to control - Gargoyles - from character development, plot, and storyline? Or Spiderman and Young Justice where the basics has already laid out?
2) Was there more pressure to succeed working on Gargoyles because it was original and the creativity was your to control? Or was there more pressure to work on an adaption on Spiderman and Young Justice because the bar has already been set?
1. They're different. Gargoyles is my baby. But in terms of the actual work, I don't think I had any more or less fun working on SpecSpidey, W.I.T.C.H. or YJ.
2. I think the pressure rises with each series, but I blame the internet more than anything inherent in the series. (I blame the internet for a lot, which is not to say I could go back to living without it.)
I have a few questions pertaining to Roy Harper.
1. Since he's 18, is he a high school senior? Or a college student?
2. What languages can he speak?
3. You metioned earlier that out of the orginal sidekicks, Roy was closest to Kaldur. What is his relationship with Robin and Kid Flash like?
4. This is more of a confirmation, actually: Artemis can speak Vietnamese, French and knows high school Spanish. Correct?
1. He graduated high school and is now taking a year off.
2. English, obviously. Otherwise, I'm not sure.
3. Cordial and friendly. Even fraternal.
4. ASKED AND ANSWERED.
Hey Greg, so I was up late watching Conan (This is going somewhere I promise) and I saw that he had gone to the studios to make himself into a superhero and then he was put into the show as a little parody. Did you have anything to do with that? It was very good humor.
I had just a TINY bit to do with it. I kibbitzed. That's all.
Hello,
1. My first question: How old is Zat-
Just kidding
2. My real question: In the episode Alpha Male, The Brain makes a comment about Captain Marvel having Achilles' courage, and states that it would have been better if he had his invulnerability instead. Was this a reference to the "Trials of Shazam" mini-series, where Achilles' courage was in fact swapped with his near invulnerability?
Thanks for your time!
1. Why, you little-- Oh. Never mind.
2. Nope. Haven't read that one. But it is something that struck me years ago.
Hello Greg! Thanks so much for the great show! It's currently my favorite on tv and solely responsible for getting me back into comics again so DC should give you guys a cut of all those DC comics I buy now. Homefront has been my favorite episode but loved Schooled (for rewatchability) and all the rest too. Anyway a few questions!
1. I think the motorcycle Zatanna rode in Secrets (that was consequently blown up)was Robin's. A. Can you confirm this? B. Did she ask permission? C. Does Robin know it's fate? D. Will this be addressed in the comic or mentioned later? (I thought it would be mentioned in Misplaced, that's why I waited before asking this.)
2.A. Do you guys have any plans to attend New York Comic Con this year? B. If so, will there be a Young Justice panel? (I want to go to one and live on the East Coast so entirely selfish!)
3.A. Do you have any say or input on the type of merchandise that gets put out? B. If we fans have requests or suggestions is there someone/somewhere you can point us? (I want something other than Action figures. A mug, keychains, or a magnet set would be nice...heck! Even t-shirts!)
4. Are Superman and Batman best friends in this universe? (Sorry if this one is already answered, I did go to the archives but only got so far!)
That's all I can think of while I got you! Thanks for your time and great show~! I totally love Robin, Wally, and their bromance and look forward to more with them along with the rest of this great cast I fall more and more in love with! Billy! Zatanna! NUUU!
Oh, also wanted to mention I'd totally throw my excitement behind any podcast, youtube vids, or commentary you happened to do for the episodes!
Thanks again!
Summer
1a. I honestly don't remember.
1b. I'd think she'd ask permission, but she is a bit mischievous.
1c. You're assuming it's his bike. I'm not confirming that.
1d. No, I have no plans to address this. Our guys live dangerous lives and do dangerous work. Batman supplies the bikes. I'm sure he knows that a little property damage is part of the gig. A bike is replaceable. Lives are not.
2a. Not that I know of. If that changes, I'll announce it here.
2b. Don't know.
3a. Say? No. Input? Yes.
3b. I wouldn't even know whom to point you to. Maybe Warner Bros. Consumer Products?
4. They're good friends. I don't know about best friends.
Hi Greg, just watched "Misplaced." I thought it was a great episode!
1. Why were the faces of The Light not "lighted-out" at the end of the episode, the way they were in their first appearances?
2. Was Sportsmaster's getaway driver the Riddler?
3. Do the five evil wizards featured in "Misplaced" all have different specialties and, if so, what are they?
4. It seemed like Zatara was unaware that Billy Batson was Captain Marvel. Is this true, and if so, did anyone else on the League know about Captain Marvel's secret identity prior to the events of this episode?
5. The Team didn't send out a signal asking other under-18 heroes to join them. Are they aware of other young heroes, specifically Rocket? Is the Justice League? (Seems like if the Justice League knows Icon, they probably know of Rocket)
Anyway, thanks so much for a great and for taking time to answer fans questions.
1. They were communicating with people who already knew their identities.
2. No, but Riddler's getaway driver was Sportsmaster.
3. I'm sure to some degree they do, but I haven't worked them all out. But Blackbriar Thorn is a druid. Felix Faust is an alchemist. Wotan is an immortal Viking sorcerer (at least in his latest incarnation. Klarion is a Lord of Chaos. Wizard is a wizard.
4. Only Batman.
5. I'd guess they were aware of Rocket's existence. But Rocket and the Atlantean heroes were also busy. They were on their own. (The rest you probably know by now.)
Hi Greg. Just curious, but if you HAD to diagnose Bruce Wayne with a mental illness, what would you diagnose him with?
A. I wouldn't.
B. I'm not qualified to do so, even if I were so inclined.
Dear Greg
Is new york close to Metropolis?
Will we ever know what superboy was doing in Metropolis in schooled?(i thought it would be in the comics)
1. Fairly close.
2. He was hoping to see Superman.
Hi Greg, thanks for taking the time to answer questions! :-)
In your gargs timeline, who dies first, Goliath or Elisa? And are they still a couple until then? Lastly, will you give a clue about what you had in mind for their deaths?
(Sounds macabre, but I was curious... ;-P)
Thanks!
MASSIVE SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
1. What is Artemis trained in besides archery and martial arts?
2. What are Artemis's parents day jobs?
1. Her father made sure she had experience with a variety of weapons and fighting styles. Strategy, ruthlessness, etc. were also on the agenda.
2. Paula's currently on disability. Crusher's day job is as enforcer for the Light.
Hey Mr Weisman!
1. Is Zatanna's Mum dead?
SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
Hi, a fun question about Misplaced:
What do you think happened to pregnant women or babies that were being born during the split dimensions?
Just to make you think :)
It depends on Klarion.

I know I'm probably forgetting some folks, and I REALLY apologize! If you send me a reminder, I'll pimp you in another post!
Well, if I haven't disgruntled every one of my fans yet, I'd hope you'd all want to tune in to the Season One finale of YOUNG JUSTICE on Saturday, April 21st (with a repeat Sunday, April 22nd) on Cartoon Network, inside the DC NATION block. (Check local listings for times.)
This is a big one. Lots gets answered. Tons of action. Humor. Romance. Edge of your seat stuff with the Team, the League and the LIGHT!! Plus a chilling event that will launch us into next week's world premiere of Season Two, a.k.a. YOUNG JUSTICE: INVASION!
And while you're at it, pick up the latest issue of our companion, in-continuity YOUNG JUSTICE comic book, available at comic book stores and on-line. It's Aqualad, Superboy, Miss Martian and all your favorite Atlanteans vs. Ocean-Master and the Purists!
TODAY, a disgruntled fan posted at the Station 8 Comment room: http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/comment/index.php.
Here's the post in full, and my response will be below it:
I posted this message on AskGreg but it was censored. I guess only sucking-up messages are allowed. Here it is:
Dear Greg Weisman,
I would just like to express my deepest outrage for what happened today (April 17). I'm talking about, off course, the new 5-questions-per-post limit you've pulled out of thin air with complete disregard for your most loyal followers. Yes, I realize AskGreg is not a right, but a privilege, like Greg Bishansky so well put it on the comments room (though he goes out of his way to kiss your ass on every turn), but WE are fans. YOURS, no less.
Basically, up until today the rule regarding the quantity of questions per post one could ask was TEN (http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?rid=925). Changing it after one month worth of answers seems like foul play. And this new limit comes off as a rather draconian and disproportionate edict, because there's no direct correlation between the number of questions and the required time to answer them. Say there is a post with 30 yes-or-no questions and another with only one that demands a more in-depth response. The former doesn't comply with the 5-questions limit, whilst the latter does. However, would the former really take up the same time to answer as the latter? How do reviews and rambles (that sometimes only prompt a three or five worded answer from you) get precluded from this? Don't they consume more of your time than answering 10, or even 20 short questions?
Also, it seems that forcing posters to spread their questions won't solve the problem, but only add to it, because instead of making one big post with 30 questions, they will make six. This will simply increase the influx of posts.
While I believe this to be illogical, logistically speaking, I understand it may seem like a good solution in theory (though I think I've just disproved it) and you feel the need to try something out. But what's really unfair is to enforce this rule as a blanket for all the approved 10-questions-posts that predate it. Those actually complied with your initially established 10 questions limit. How is this fair or even rational? Some posters ask stupid, shallow questions, but others actually take their time to think and write insightful queries, and, not unlike essays, those take time, and throwing them with such careless disregard is very disrespectful. Particularly so when those conformed to the policy, have been stewing for ONE MONTH and now have to be distributed into different posts and take the back seat at the end of a two months' waiting (or longer) queue. Wouldn't it be more logical to close the queue as you've done before so that you can clear it?
I do realize that this very post can be axed under the auspices of some new made up rule to cut down the number of questions, even after and if it gets approved. In case this does get through, I'm sure you won't see it until the next couple of months, and when you do, I'm sure you'll write some well composed answer making me come off as an ungrateful and obnoxious douche, and you'll have the last word, because I won't have a chance for a timely reply. But I felt like I needed to share my disenchantment for what seems to be a gross disrespect of your FANS. You know, the people who watch your shows, buy your merchandise and keep you on a payroll.
Sincerely,
Disgruntled
A disgruntled (former) fan.
posted @ Fri, Apr 20, 2012 12:46:02 pm EDT
MY RESPONSE:
Dear disgruntled (former) fan,
I agree with some of what you've written. Among other things, this post should NOT have been deleted by the moderators. And I'll make sure they know it. Comments, positive or negative, are fair game here. Always were and always will be.
And it's true, of course, that sometimes a post with many questions can be answered more quickly than a post with a single in-depth question, but I have NEVER wanted the moderators to judge or try to guess in advance the length of my response to anything, let alone gauge the time it takes me. Setting a question limit seems like a reasonable way to make things manageable.
I also, as I've stated before, see the unfairness in me reducing the limit from ten to five without warning and applying the rule retroactively to posts that contained 6-10 questions. As I've admitted, I screwed up there. I thought I had said five in the past, and instructed the moderators to erase all posts with more than five. By the time it was pointed out to me that I had said ten in the past, it was too late to recover those questions. TOO LATE. We don't keep a record of disallowed questions, so that's it. I screwed up and admitted it, but it's done. So from here on out, the max is five. And some posts were lost unfairly. And that does suck. And I do sincerely sympathize with your frustrations and disgruntlement, up to a point.
But here's that point: you don't seem to get or acknowledge (or perhaps care) that I'm currently on the verge of shutting down the site entirely. ENTIRELY. You don't have to praise me, my work or Ask Greg, but I'm trying to take measures to make me want to keep doing this AT ALL. Some of these measures, are indeed, as you've noted, 'draconian', forcing you to - horrors - repost your questions and wait even longer for the answers you do seem to feel entitled to. But again, the alternative is you NEVER get your answers. EVER. Now if this response, makes you "come off as an ungrateful and obnoxious douche" - well, I don't know how else you would expect me to respond. But this doesn't have to be the "last word". Normally, I only occasionally stop by the S8 comment room, but I promise for the next week or so, I'll stop by there every weekday and at least once on the weekend, which should give you "a chance for a timely reply". Any post there (like this one) that seems relevant to the current conversation will get pushed right to the front of the line and be published here at ASK GREG in a ramble (like this one).
That's my compromise. It's probably less-than-satisfactory, but it's the best I can offer at this time.
[I also want to state, that you've NOT been privy to the discussions between myself, Gorebash, Masterdramon and Todd. I have RESISTED taking even more draconian measures suggested by them and/or by others at Station 8, because as much as possible, I'd like ASK GREG to remain the open free-flowing forum it has been for like a decade or more now. The measures we are taking, draconian as they may seem, are still less draconian than they might be. But if I am forced to truly make the site rigid, then the fun will go out of it for me in the other direction, and I'll still wind up shutting it down anyway.]
Obviously, I'm not in the business of taking fans and making them "disgruntled (former) fan[s]", but I'm hoping you're a fan of THE WORK I do, more than a fan of me anyway. I mean, face it, you don't know me. I could be an axe-murderer. But if you like Gargoyles or W.I.T.C.H. or Spectacular Spider-Man or Young Justice (or whatever), then the work is the work is the work, and I'd hope you'd remain a fan of that work whether I'm a big of a jerk or not, whether Ask Greg existed or not and certainly whether or not I get to the answers to your questions in one month or six. I mean there have been times when I've been TWO YEARS (or more) behind in answering questions. This lag is nothing in comparison to that. But somehow the discourse associated with the whole thing seems... meaner. And I'm really, truly trying to keep my desire to maintain this site below the boil-over point.
