I know you've thoroughly addressed your reasoning behind choosing Dick Grayson for Robin; and I'd assume the choice of Wally West for Kid Flash vs Bart Allen mirrors that to a degree. Moreover, I'm sure ethnic diversity amongst the team played a role in the choice of Kaldur'ahm for Aqualad. However, I'm curious what specifically drew you to Superboy, Miss Martian, and Artemis.

I'm aware that Wondergirl wasn't option at the time due to legal reasons, so that took one teenage hero equipped with both super-strength and a connection to the league (via Wonder Woman) out of the equation. The other leaguer that occupies the same niche as Wonder Woman is Superman. If you were going for a 'sidekick' of sorts to Superman then you'd have Superboy and Supergirl to choose from - what drew you to him in contrast to her?

What about Artemis was special? I don't necessarily mean in juxtaposition Arrowette or Speedy (Mia Dearden), though I'd love to hear your thought there to, so much as out of all of the DC girls you could have chosen what drew you to her?

Finally, what drew you to Miss Martian? Assuming you wanted an alien character on the team's rosters, you'd have a vast assortment of DC characters at your fingertips that fit that mold.

In conclusion, I want to say that I adore Young Justice and it's characters. This inquiry was purely out of curiosity.

Thank you for your time!

Greg responds...

These are all valid questions... that I'd be way more open to discussing AFTER Season One ends. For now, there's almost no way I could get into the topics without SPOILERS. So, NO COMMENT.

hey Greg, i was wondering, season 2 of Young Justice... is titled Young Justice: Invasion which most likely means the kids, the league, and earth has to deal with an alien invasion, however episode 16 of season 1.. which will be shown soon, "Failsafe" has an alien invasion as well.. well episode 16 sort of tie in to the Season 2 invasion.. or are the 2 separate invasions.... seperate?

Greg responds...

SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

(considering Young Justice)As a teenager, i know that teenagers curse a lot. So if you were given the chance to let a few curse words to slip from the characters mouths, would you? And it's fun to see them say a few "dirty" jokes that a younger audience won't understand but teenagers understand.

Greg responds...

Eh... I'm not writing Deadwood here.

Greg, do you have any favourite DC couples? I'll tell you my favourites. My favourites are Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon as well as Traci Thirteen and Jaime Reyes.

Greg responds...

Dinah and Oliver is the big one for me. Then probably Bruce and Selena.

Others I've enjoyed (depending how they were written) include John and Kathy, Arthur and Mera, Barry and Iris, Cameron and Bette, Clark and Lois.

This is all historical. NONE of the above should be meant to imply anything about our plans for YOUNG JUSTICE. And for that reason I've intentionally NOT included any couples I've liked involving teen heroes.

Are there any spin off concepts for Gargoyles that you've not revealed to the fandom?

(I'm not trying to get specifics, a yes/no/NO COMMENT is more the ballpark I'm asking about).

Greg responds...

No. I'm not hiding spin-off concepts. I've named all the ones I've thought of to date.

Hi Greg,
Big fan here. And I mean BIG fan. Like, Blockbuster-sized-big fan. This is definitely one of my most favorite (was there a grammar mistake somewhere in there?) shows ever. EVER.
I don't really have any questions about the team. I think you've portrayed them all fabulous, all the way from M'gann's naivety about Earth in the beginning right down to Robin and Wally's amazing BFFosity.
But I do have some questions about the League, since we haven't seen a ton of them yet.
I am a huge fangirl, so...
I was wondering if...
1. Is Hawkwoman with Green Lantern or Hawkman on Earth-16? Neither?
2. Is Batman in a relationship with Catwoman, Princess Diana, or neither?
3. Any other relationships? (Besides the given ones, like GA and BC and Barry and Iris.)

Urgh, pointless question in pointless. Well, thanks for taking the time to look at this. It means a ton to us fanirls everywhere!

Buster.

Greg responds...

1. Hawkwoman and Hawkman are spouses.

2. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT... except that if you check out issues 11 and 12 of our companion comic, you can see the status of his relationship with Talia al Ghul.

3. Sure.

Tom writes...

I've always appreciated that the show you create feature so many diverse characters with agency. It's great to see Elisa and her family, to finally seeing Spider-man in New York that features so many people of color in his cast, to having Aqualad and Artemis as such important, interesting characters in Young Justice. I love that your shows aren't engaging in the tokenism the way a lot of other shows (for kids or otherwise) do. And having strong women is a huge part of that--I remember friends in 4th grade fighting over who got to be Elisa or Demona at recess. So thank you for that!

I think with shows that are adapted from comics, there's this predicament of wanting to pay homage to decades of comic book history while not carrying forward the inherent racism and sexism of the eras when they were written. I think The Batman botched that when Detective Yin was replaced by Commissioner Gordon--closer to the comics, but axes a female, minority lead for a white male.

Not to mention the pressures from other areas. I remember hearing Dwayne McDuffie say that even in the height of its popularity, companies had no interest in making Static Shock toys, for example.

So, how do you handle this? Whether it's selecting minority/women characters from comics, creating new ones, or changing characters races like in Spectacular Spider-man, what's that process like when you make your shows?

Greg responds...

Um... mostly... I just try to reflect the world I see. I'm a sheltered white boy, but even a sheltered white boy would have to be blind not to see that the world is populated with more than just sheltered white boys. So putting in strong female characters and strong characters of color seems natural and easy, frankly.

If you're asking for process, though, it's very much case by case. We don't sit there and go, "We need 2.5 minorities on the Team with 23% females." Instead, we build a diverse cast of characters, character by character. When adapting a property (as opposed to creating one from scratch, like GARGOYLES), we DO pay attention to tradition. But some characters are certainly more iconic than others. So Robin, Kid Flash and Superman's clone remain Caucasian, and there was never any thought of changing them. But by using Garth's Tempest identity, it freed us up to create a new Aqualad, as the son of Black Manta - in part, to demonstrate the alternate Earth idea, i.e. this is Earth-16, and one decision changed the course of it's history (continuity) from what we're familiar with in the comics. As for Artemis, we felt she was obscure enough to make her half-Vietnamese, without fundamentally changing what mattered most about her. Likewise, her mother Paula Brooks-Crock seemed obscure enough to go ahead and make her the Vietnamese Paula Nguyen-Crock, as that also helped us make her Cheshire's mother, since Cheshire has always been the daughter of a Vietnamese mother and a Caucasian father. Maybe "obscure" isn't the right word, but I think you get the idea. As for Miss Martian, well, obviously she's a Martian, but I suppose we could have made her Megan Morse identity a minority too. (We portrayed her uncle John Jones as African, after all.) But again, we're not trying to meet quotas, and as you'll eventually see, we had reasons for the choices we made with Megan.

2:What are the Teams favorite dishes?

Howdy Mr. Weisman,
I tried checking around your archive, but didn't find this question or a couple of others. For starters, I LOVE Young Justice, you guys are doing an awesome job with it! So, my interrogation is this.
1- In the episode Bereft, Miss Martian restoring Superboy's memories show a clip of her in her human form a the local Happy Harbor High School cheerleading practice attire, but they hadn't went to high school yet. At first I thought it was probably an airing mishap of the episodes, but then on the episode Targets when they went to school, the Sphere was present. I'm confused. I also noticed a farm present when Miss Martian and Superboy's minds connected, could this farm be Smallville? I thought Superboy didn't know Superman's identity since in Targets the suggestion of the name Kent made them think of Dr. Fate and not Clark Kent. I confused again...

2- I noticed the dates of the missions have been promptly kept up with and I was wondering does this mean there will an episode in the future showing the team celebrating the holidays?

3- I noticed since Wolf hit the scenes, we haven't seen the Sphere. Do they get along?

4- Miss Martian is in cheerleading, does that mean Superboy will be participating in any extra-school activities or sports?

5- What's the martian bioship's weight capacity?

6- With 10 episodes left of season 1, will be seeing any headway (instead of glares+ignoring) in the Superman + Superboy relation status before season 2?

Thanks SO much for your time. If you can answer any one of these I will be so very happy! ^_^

Greg responds...

1a. She was NOT wearing Happy Harbor cheerleading attire.

1b. You saw a farm or you saw a corn field (like the corn field from 105)?

2. By now, hopefully, you've seen our Halloween episode.

3. Yes.

A few questions on Red Tornado's family...I knew next to nothing about the characters until they showed up on Young Justice so I turned to Wikipedia and Comicvine and have a few question. It seems Red Torpedo and Firebrand were Golden Age Quality Comics properties that got bought in total by DC. The reappeared in the 80s but set in their original WWII and shortly after time period.
1. Do you have rough ideas of their heroic days in the YJ universe?
If so...
2. Red Torpedo seemed to have founded some scientist paradise floating city after his heroing days. In the cartoon continuity did he die instead?
3. The original Firebrand was a rich man without superpowers. When he was brought back in the 80's he was injured (or killed?) and his sister who had or was soon to have superpowers discovered his secret and took over the identity. In the YJ version is she the original Firebrand, or is she also in some way sister to the first one with a similar backstory?
4. Assuming wiki is correct- she also had cocustody of her late ex fiance's daughter (mother of Atom Smasher) and later was killed, along with her husband by a supervillain. In the YJ continuity did she have the daughter and/or husband?
5. I missed it while watching the episode, but comments refer to the flashback of her death set at the 1939 World's Fair. Was she a pre-WWII hero in the YJ continuity instead of a WWII era one as in the orignal comics?
6. Last question- a plain old in reference to the episode question: Did the JLA make any sort of announcement about their deaths fighting Red Volcano? Or any sort of Public or private memorial? There were no bodies to bury, but they did deserve honors. And, though elderly, there would seem to be folks around who would still remember the 'beloved' Firebrand.

Greg responds...

1. Yes.

2. See issues 14 and 15 of the Young Justice companion comic.

3. Red Inferno was the second Firebrand. As to her connection to the first: SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

4. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

5. Actually, there was some understandable confusion there. Her "death" took place at the SITE of the 1939 World's Fair - which was also the headquarters of the All-Star Squadron - but it actually happened in 1945.

6. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

2. Do all magic users speak the same language when they use magic or does is vary from person to person.
3. How strong is Superman?

Greg responds...

1a. Busy.

1b. Are you sure he didn't appear? I don't have the episode in front of me to check, but I really thought he did.

2. It varies.

3. Strong.
