Hi Greg! I have a question about Young Justice.
1. In "Agendas" how long was Superboy in a trance for? After Lex said "Red Sun" and he zoned out. The background changed to night time but it didn't say when.
Off the top of my head, I can't remember exactly. But it was long enough for the sun to fully set.
How did the parallel universe/Earth-16 approach come about in the development of Young Justice? Was the decision to set the show in an alternate timeline influenced by the discovery that you couldn't use Donna Troy as one of the Team's founding members? Obviously there was no way you'd have followed the comics to the letter even if you had used Donna and Garth, but maybe not being able to use all the founding Titans was what prompted you to 'embrace' the series as a parallel universe show - since that was one of the first big statements made about the show when it was announced back in 2010?
No, it had nothing to do with any specific characters.
We knew that we'd be doing some stuff different; we knew we wanted to surprise our audience. We could have just done that without labeling it. But since (at the time) DC had 52 Earths, we figured we could - in our way - be IN continuity with their multiverse by choosing an unclaimed Earth (which is what we thought Earth-16 was).
Greg, do you have any plans to post ANY of your scripts online? Your writing is clear, and structurally, they're a fantastic resources for writers trying to break into animation. The way you use sfx as action is a illuminating!
Currently, the ONLY way to see one of your scripts is to go all the way to The Writer's Guild in Los Angeles, and even there, you're not allowed to copy the script. Even if you feel uncomfortable showing the whole script ( just an act or two is all we need), posting it as a media resource on the site - perhaps as a .pdf so it is difficult to copy - would give peace of mind? It doesn't matter if the script is from YJ, Gargoyles, or Spider-Man...

I find all three interesting. You'll find - as others have - that ranking things isn't big on my list of stuff to do. Just not the way my brain works.

I don't think I made myself clear in my previous post. I honestly didn't have a distaste for the show's version of Wally West from strictly a character standpoint (personality/behavior/etc) aside from him continuing to sit things out after the end of "Darkest" (which I thought took the heroic aspect away from his character). The character itself was likable and well rounded for the most part. More so than on other shows he has been a part of. I had absolutely no problems loving Wally on Young Justice. If I did, I wouldn't have bothered commenting in the first place, and most likely wouldn't have continued watching the show as I did. But just because a character is a "clear fan favorite" doesn't necessarily mean that the show's treatment of the character and/or their story always "worked" for those fans.
And I actually really liked the ideas that the show was presenting to me in regards to Wally. I mentioned that I was always a fan of Wally & Dick's friendship in the comics. I loved Artemis, and liked the idea of her and Wally together. And I thought Wally's inferiority to Barry (and later Bart) could have been interesting and meaningful. But I ended up thinking that the show's execution of those things was lacking.
I won't get into too much detail this time since I know we disagree, but I just never felt that Dick was ever shown to be a true and loyal friend to Wally on the show when it mattered. Nor do I think that Artemis was ever shown to like any of the things about him you mentioned in your breakdown of their relationship on the show itself. I just didn't feel there was any real substance when it came to their side of things. And if I don't buy that Wally's relationship with Artemis and his friendship with Dick was a mutual thing, then their treatment of him goes a completely different direction.
So things like the show saying that Wally needed and deserved to be with someone who was only shown to ridicule him, hit him, and generally tell him how awful he was unless he was propping her up ("Bereft" and "Insecurity") like it did in "Denial" was a big negative to me. As was Artemis singling him out as the reason she wouldn't tell the team about her family during her therapy session. It also makes Dick routinely going out of his way to make fun of Wally, sometimes even hitting on the points that Wally was supposed to be insecure about, seem incredibly cruel. And I don't mean to say that Wally was perfect at all when it came to these things on the show. But there were moments where I felt he acted like a true and loyal friend to Dick (like during their conversation in "Performance") when it mattered. And Wally practically gushed about how great Artemis was and stood up for her for the majority of "Insecurity" when she needed it. His side of things was balanced out in my opinion.
Also, I will admit that I'm clearly biased when it comes to how the show handled Wally's inferiority since the story of him becoming the Flash in the comics was always a big deal for me. So the show having him admit to being humiliated (when he needed Barry/Bart to carry him away from Neutron's blast because he wasn't fast enough on his own) and having Bart openly mock him ("Cause you don't have the Allen eye!") for not being on Barry/Bart's level in "Bloodlines" was hard to watch from that standpoint. And while I knew Wally was a goner the moment Bart showed up (Wally eventually disappearing for nearly half the season only reinforced that idea), I was hoping for at least a satisfying death. Instead, Wally was killed simply because he was the one speedster that didn't belong on the show. A fact that the show dedicated an entire episode to pounding home earlier in the season (in mostly a comedic fashion no less). It's just really hard to say that Wally was worthy of being part of the Flash legacy when the show does that. And I don't mean to say that there's anything wrong with not making Wally the Flash, but I felt the way the show handled it (humiliating/mocking/killing him simply for being an inferior speedster) ultimately disrespected a story that was very important to me and a character that I loved.
Okay, well, like you said: we disagree. I get that you didn't like how we handled things. (I got it some time ago.) But this just seems like more of the same to me. An interpretation without nuance.
I don't feel like we humiliated Wally at all. We mocked him, sure (in a good-natured way, I believe), but he mocked himself (in a self-deprecating comedic way), and he mocked others and others got mocked and good-natured mocking went on all around, and I see ZERO evidence that Wally got it any worse than anyone else.
I also don't see his lack of speed (relative to Bart and Barry) as being even vaguely relevant. Wally was MORE of a hero for fighting the good fight with less speed. From DAY ONE, Brandon and I saw his relatively contained powers as a BONUS for his character. From an action standpoint, writing and boarding for Barry and Bart was WAY more difficult, I can tell you that for sure. Wally was way more fun to choreograph and utilize in action.
I think you missed the entire point of "Bloodlines". Pretty much completely. Wally & Jay wind up saving Bart & Barry just as many times as Wally himself was saved. But your interpretation ignores that, because it doesn't fit your preconceived notion that he was being humiliated by Bart. Which is FLAT-OUT not the case. You also ignore the conversation that Bart and Wally have in "Summit," which indicates clearly how much Bart respects and admires Wally.
And frankly, as I've said before, Wally is my FAVORITE SPEEDSTER. With Jay in second, Barry third and Bart fourth. So the notion that we disrespected Mr. West is just flat out untrue, whether or not you like how we handled him.
We believe Dick loved Wally as a friend. We believe Artemis loved Wally dearly and with all her heart. We believe that M'gann, Zatanna, Conner, Kaldur and all the rest, cared for and valued Wally. We think we showed that Bart and Barry and Artemis and Dick and Wally's parents and the others were devastated by his HEROIC SACRIFICE. And we do see that death as being an Heroic Sacrifice, not at taking place "because he was the one speedster that didn't belong on the show." I don't even know what that means. Wally, who was safely up on the Watchtower, joined the other two of his own free will. And carried on right through to the end, despite the fact that he KNEW it meant his end. Choosing to view his death in any other light is frankly mind-boggling to me.
But, AGAIN, I'm not trying to change your mind, because it's way beyond clear that I can't. And you're clearly not going to change mine. So can we just let it drop now, please? We're just going in circles.

Well, by now, you've probably viewed everything. (In any case, I hope you haven't been waiting six months for this response, as there are many other resources where this information is available.)
A couple episodes did air out of order the first time through. But the DVDs are all in the correct order.

In your ramble on "Future Tense", you commented that nowadays you wouldn't be allowed to do such a story, where almost everyone gets seemingly killed, even if (as happened in "Future Tense") it was revealed to be an illusion at the end.
In the "Failsafe" episode of "Young Justice", you got to use such a concept - almost all of the main and supporting cast is killed, and again it turns out to be an illusion. Did you have any difficulties with Standards & Practices over the numerous deaths (and deaths which, as I recall, showed the characters even being reduced to skeletons before being completely disintegrated), even when those deaths were revealed to be an illusion at the end? (I wonder if it helped, not only that it *did* turn out to be an illusion, that: a) the characters hypothesized for a while that the disintegration victims were really being teleported on board the aliens' spaceship and b) "Young Justice" airs on cable rather than on regular broadcast television.)
You're more or less answering your own question here.
We definitely were questioned about it.
It definitely helped that for a good chunk of time, the cast (and maybe the audience) think that the "deaths" were actually teleportations.
By the time they figure out otherwise, we were then very close to the reveal that it was all just a psychic conceit.
And, yes, it at least helps a little that the series is on cable. Most kids cable networks abide by FCC guidelines voluntarily. But they have more discretion.
How old is Adrian Toomes in Spectacular Spider-man?
If I ever set a specific age for him, I don't recall. I did not create an entire timeline for The Spectacular Spider-Man the way I did for Gargoyles and Young Justice. Mostly, because SpecSpidey was more contained and easier to keep track of.
Spider-Man question. Why didn't Spidey just tell Eddie and Gwen he was going to die on the streets if he didn't have the money to pay off the bills from the pictures of the lizard and spidey fight?
"Die on the streets"?
Gwen knew about his financial trouble, and ultimately forgave him. Even Eddie was willing to forgive him at that early stage. But neither felt that that excuse justified how he behaved.
In the Young Justice:Invasion episode "Runaways" what was the contents of the duffle bag Virgil Hawkins had when he and the other runaways escaped from Star Labs?

Is/was Young Justice in the same timeline as Batman: Under The Red Hood. There are so many similarities and the little glimpses of Jason todd resembled the one in BAtman: Under The Red Hood.
I love the show young justice. I watched it online and was really really sad when I found out there were only two seasons. Once I finished the last episode I cried for an hour because you killed him!! How could you do that he was the best character ever!
It is still my favorite show but I was devastated.:'(

I'm not sure if that was an actual question or rhetorical. In some ways, we're glad that you cared enough about Wally to BE devastated. It means we did our job.
I don't know how to ask what I want to ask the way I want to ask it...If that makes any sense. But here goes...
First a little exposition. I am a gay man in my early 30's who was an active-duty Army Infantry soldure in Afghanistan in 2003-4, and currently in the National Guard.
That being said.
Many more years ago than I'd care to admit, you mentioned that one of my all-time favorite cartoons from my teenhood had a gay character...and I was, to say the least, esthatic (on the inside).
It ment that there was a great writer somewhere out there who knew that there was somebody like me somewhere out there.
An inteligent individual who was also a fearless warrior to boot...Despite what you may think, I am am not refering to Lexington (although I do love the character), but to Owen.
You see...I AM Owen. The witty, low speaking "straight man" (So to speak...not literaly of course...and, yes, I do see the irony). I'm also an attractive blond man who looks stunning in glasses (If I do say so myself. Which I don't. Other people say that).
I've just just always imagioned Owen as gay. For no particular reason other than, well, that's me on the screen there (These days I'm also an assistant to a general manager to the largest company you've never heard of).
I guess what I'm asking is...am I simply reflecting? Or is there somebody (specifically named Owen) in the Gargoyle reality who reflects me? (Besides Lexington, whom, as I've said, I love...but dosen't reflect me at all).
Owen is asexual. I don't know if that's disappointing or not. Puck is bisexual (at least). Of course, if you want Owen to be gay in your mental fan fiction, that's still totally cool.
Need some advice because I just became a screenwriter for a Television series based in Hong Kong. How much should I charger per 24 minute episode?
I'm not sure how to advise you. The short answer is get as much money as you can squeeze out of them.
Animation Guild Union minimums are just over $7K per 22-minute episode, if that helps. WGA minimums are much, much higher.
1)So far, you've said this Wildstorm character was included in a 'stealth way' and appeared in Young Justice season one. While it's been fun rewatching season one, it's been a challenge looking for this character. Could you please offer up another clue and who or where this character is?

2. The architect was probably John Stewart. I'd lay odds, Wayne Construction won the bid to build the place, with some (top secret) work done personally by the Lanterns, Superman and other Leaguers.

Spectacular Spider-Man Blu-Ray box set got announced yesterday. If we make those sales skyrocket, is there any chance we can bring it back or are we done? Let us fans know and we will get on it.
Let me put it this way: if the BluRay set doesn't do well, that's another nail in the coffin.
I have to admit I'm a little confused about the explanation as to why Wally wasn't helping out for most of the alien invasion during the second season of Young Justice. You say it was because Dick told him what to do, but didn't Dick take a shot at him for not helping out in "Darkest" when he told Wally that all he cared about was his 'stupid souvenirs'? I mean, it was clear that Wally didn't want anything to do with the hero life anymore. He did nothing but complain when he helped out in "Bloodlines". He was adamant about leaving 'the life' behind in "Depths". He told Bart that he and Artemis were planning to go right back into retirement in "Summit" without even talking it over with Artemis. If it didn't have to do with Artemis or his family, he appeared to want no part of it.
Of course there's nothing wrong with wanting to retire. But I thought it was clear that Dick resented Wally on some level for doing so based on that comment. But if Dick was the reason Wally wasn't helping out with the invasion, then Dick telling Wally that he only cares about his souvenirs makes absolutely no sense to me. Dick interrupted Wally's life knowing that he and Artemis were trying to leave the hero business behind. He just allowed Wally's little cousin to be kidnapped for torture. And he nearly got Conner killed in the process. So how can he have the nerve to tell Wally that he only cares about his souvenirs after all that if he's responsible for Wally not helping out in the first place? And for that matter, how does Dick continue to have complete authority over what Wally can and can't do with his life after that?
Also, I don't see why Wally had to play the part of the "mourning boyfriend" for months to make Artemis' death believable during an alien invasion when Artemis was shown to have moved on with her life and rejoined the team two weeks after Wally died. Were we supposed to believe that Wally was incapable of doing that? Even during a time when the fate of the world literally hung in the balance?
Really, I don't see any believable explanation for Wally not helping out besides him simply not wanting to do that. But you've mentioned multiple times that that was not the case. So it seems like you guys just didn't want to use Wally (or couldn't find a way to fit him in) as it didn't make any sense from either a story or character standpoint that he wouldn't help out.
In "Darkest," Dick takes a "shot" at Wally out of defensiveness and insecurity. He KNOWS Wally doesn't give a damn (in this context) about his souvenirs. He KNOWS this. And Dick doesn't resent Wally. Dick's simply unsure of his own position, of his own plans with Kaldur, so he lashes out at the person who's confronting him with fears he already has.
Dick doesn't have complete authority over Wally. Never did. But Dick is in charge of the Team, and Wally respects that. If Dick felt (rightly or wrongly) that Wally needs to hang back for now, maintaining the notion that he's out of the game - and maintaining his distance from Artemis/Tigress, then Wally will respect that, especially since there's not much he can do to help otherwise, beyond simply being another hero, something they have no shortage of. Dick is intentionally holding Wally in reserve for when he's needed and when his appearance will catch the bad guys off guard. See "Summit." (And, yes, Dick is also somewhat nervous about Wally coming into contact with an undercover Tigress, as he's not sure how either would deal with that situation. You can argue that Dick worries too much. But not that Dick doesn't respect his BEST FRIEND.)
As for Wally, in my mind, he's hardly adamant about staying in retirement, he's simply trying very hard to stick with a resolution that BOTH he and Artemis made. He knows - as Artemis knows - how seductive the hero life is. So he's trying very hard to be strong. Sure, in "Bloodlines" he has some attitude about Impulse, certainly, but he absolutely is NOT complaining through the whole episode. And he doesn't bitch about being called in by Nightwing AT ALL. NOT ONCE.
In "Summit," he does tell Bart that he and Artemis will retire again, because he's assuming that's what they both want. It had been a long, hard decision for both to decide to retire. He's simply trying to abide by that decision. But one look at how he behaves when he's back in costume in "Bloodlines," "Summit" or "Endgame" shows that he's far from absolute over the issue. And a conversation with her could have swayed him, as is fairly obvious in "Endgame" even without the dialogue we trimmed out where he flat out states that maybe they could both start being heroes again. (NOTE: We cut that dialogue both for time and because it seemed to big a clue that one of them was going to die.)

I have to say, it seems to me that you're interpreting events (and qualifying them) to suit your already existing interpretation instead of the other way around. So I bought Young Justice: Legacy and played it today. I'm going to be blunt, Greg. It was awful. I played 2 missions and stopped. I can't really come up with a single compliment. The graphics, the gameplay, movements, everything was awful. And the initial (joke?) Kid Flash dialogue about asking if the archeologist was rich made me cringe. I know the story must have been better, but I just can't see myself playing through this game.
I know this is not your fault AT ALL, but I just find it very unfortunate that a series I love so MUCH like Young Justice has been tainted by this awful awful game.
I was wondering if I would have appreciated it more had it been a mobile game, but the fact is I found the whole combat system completely counter-intuitive, I really don't know what Little Orbit was thinking.
I know it was a low budget game, but maybe Little Orbit should've tried making a side-scroller instead. This game tries to be X-Men Legends/Marvel Ultimate Alliance, when it is obvious that it doesn't have the resources to make a comparable game.
I really hope YJ is resurrected some day, but NOT like this.
Well, I'm not sure what to say. I'm not a gamer, myself. I have no experience in this area. Other folks seemed to have enjoyed it well enough. But I can't judge. I'm still proud of the story, and I think the game is worth supporting for the story if nothing else, and because supporting ANY official YJ product is a vote for bringing the show back.
I have another little question.
We know that the Guardians are directly selected by the Oracle for specific reasons: was there any plan to reveal the specific reasons for the C.H.Y.K.N.'s selection (in particular Nerissa)?

It wasn't shown, but you saw what happened to Arthur's skiff. The same thing happened to Goliath's. Since the skiff/Avalon "knew" it was the last stop, it sank away and returned to Avalon. Recycled, don'tcha know.

Obviously, at this point, Artemis is 'dead', and Tula is actually dead.

1) Has Deathstroke ever served in any branch of the military? If so, what was his rank?
2) In the comics, Slade was given superhuman abilities (healing factor, enhanced speed, strength, etc.). Is this true for Earth-16's version as well?
3) Sportsmaster was on a first-name basis with Slade. How long have they known each other?
4) Does Slade have a wife or children?
5) How did Deathstroke lose his eye?

I'm honestly not trying to have an "ah ha! Gotcha" moment here (although it may seem like it after I ask my questions), as I am honestly curious and a little confused.
You've said that Odin was able to circumvent Oberon's rule of not stealing Avalonian artifacts from mortals because he felt that it belonged to him.
My question is:
1) Why does he believe the Eye still belongs to him after he gave it up willingly (i.e. not stolen from him)?
To put it in "mortal perspective," if a woman gives up her baby for adoption, and for whatever reason the adoptive family decides to give the baby to someone else, and the birth mother takes the baby back, thats kidnapping (i.e. theft)...even if the birth mother feels justified, reasoning that this new family isn't who she agreed to give the baby to and doesn't like how they are raising the child, if the authorities caught her, she would be punished the same as if she hadn't given birth to the baby - as she gave up all rights to the child in the first place.
Now, in Odin's case, Oberon is the authority and Odin was able to "bend" Oberon's law because he "felt" justified:
2) Does Oberon agree with Odin, that he is the rightful owner dispite having given it away a long time ago?
3) Why? Does he not see contractual agreements with mortals binding?
4) Was Odin punished for breaking the law or forgiven? (If this is a story for another day, I'll understand if you do not feel like answering this one).

Plus, if you gave your baby up to adoption to someone specific, I'd lay odds that in many adoption contracts, there may in fact be a clause that gives the birth parents the option of getting the child back instead of it going to an unapproved third party. But in any case, Odin is a god (from his point of view). He sure as hell wouldn't think much of your analogy.

Before I get into my questions, I would like to say I appreciate the effort you and the creative team put in for your sensory and background details on Young Justice. Personally, what keeps me coming back to Earth 16's universe is how you and the creative team have a well thought out timeline and detailed analysis to make sure where and how things occur in your show. From Justice League political relations to the structure of galactic communication to mystical dealings, these little sensory details were honestly what made the show seem more grounded to me than say any live-action superhero movie I've seen(with the exception of The Dark Knight). Of course it still requires to hold some suspension of disbelief, but rather than creating situations from coincidence with no consequence was very effective way of handling how superheroes affect their world. Of course superheroes and extraordinary crises are the forefront of any superhero media interpretation, but what engulfs me completely is realizing the writers know how their world works from inside and out. Your answering fan questions and creating a personal timeline for your DC universe is something I wish to aspire to if ever I can head stories either of my own or retell a version of someday.
And since I'm very fond of the occult and all things mystical, I would like to ask you a few questions on how pantheons affect their domains.
1. Are the various pantheons of Gods on Earth brought into being through faith, worship, and prayer, or are they born through other unspecified means?
2. Is sorcery not an earth-bound phenomenon and can be practiced on other planets? I assume that is the case, given L-Ron's recognition of Zatana's powers.
3. Do other planets with civilizations have their own Gods that are corporeal? As in their existence is proven, similar in vein to Wonder Woman's Greek pantheon and other biblical-based figures on Earth.
4. To what extent are the ramifications of pantheon crises? Their effects wouldn't extend outside of the planet, would they? I am usually confused with the way DC cosmology is structured. In the Sandman, everything seems pretty much simple as everything in existence seems to have its own system. In Lucifer and various other comics dealing with Judeo-Christian religion, it is implied their actions put the fate of the entire universe at risk. Not to insinuate that your universe follows any similar guidelines in regards to other media representations, but I would just like to know some form of clarification on this front given your exceptional talent at making almost every element from DC Comics fit.

So I was wondering, that while the concept of Venom Symbiote makes perfect sense in the universe full of Cosmis beings, time travel, made-up science, magic and whatnot, it kinda sticks out like a sore thumb when you place it to Spidey's more down to earth (pun not intended) "personal universe." So were there ever any plans (even in very early development) to update Venom something more realistic?

if so, how does he view his relationship to Hudson, since they cant technically be rookery brothers? (like cousins mabey?)
