I saw your latest episode today "Alienated".I was wondering if Kaldur'ahm and his dad are both called Black Manta or is Kaldur'ahm under another identity.

Greg responds...

There are times when Kaldur is intentionally posing as/standing in for his father, in which case, he's actively trying to fool the opposition into calling him Black Manta (or Manta for short). Other times, no such subterfuge is being attempted, and he's generally referred to as .... drumroll... Kaldur'ahm, i.e. his name. Some folks still refer to him as Aqualad, of course, which is natural.

Superboy Fan writes...

Quick question what made you decide to make superman and superboy's relationship like brothers instead of father and son; no problem with it it just seems odd, since it changed the already established "father/son" dynamic? In season 1 batman says to superman "the boy needs his father" and in alienated superman calls superboy "little brother" and in the comics they were played off as 'Cousins'.

Greg responds...

I can't speak for the comics, at all.

But I think the whole father/son thing was part of the problem for Superman. When he readjusted his thinking (sometime during the time skip) to regard Superboy as a little brother, it all straightened out fairly easily for both of them.

Ultimately, I believe in a Superman who isn't perfect, but is deep-down, fundamentally, a good guy. He may not have been ready to 'parent' a clone that was created without his knowledge or consent, but he could be a big brother to that clone.

Mr. Greg Weisman,

This posting is about my thoughts on the May 12th episode of YJ:Invasion. If you see questions, you'll know when you see it.

I watched "Alienated," and I still can't believe Aqualad became a traitor. According to his claims, he blames The Team for the death of Tula. He also blames Aquaman for not telling him about his relationship to Black Manta. I'm surprised that Aquaman knew all along in this Earth-16 continuity. When Aqualad tries to escape, Nightwing and Superboy try to take matters into their own hands and attempt to stop him on their own, but the distraction of the bomb complicated things. It's worth nothing, as I'm sure you've seen on the episode, that it seemed like Aqualad personally wanted to fight one-on-one with Nightwing (since he said "Just you and me, old friend"). He obviously didn't get a chance this week, but I have a feeling that their personal showdown is inevitable.

Otherwise, this has been a great episode this week. We got to see Wonder Woman and Wonder Girl team up. We got to see the entire Bat Family (sans Jason Todd) in action. We also see Superman's relationship with Superboy greatly improved as they treated each other more like brothers rather than as father and son. Was it my imagination, or was Superboy called Kon-El?

The sad part, beside Aqualad being a traitor, was the fact that the accused members of Justice League (along with few that are joining them voluntarily) had to leave for trial since they now found out what they did. I hope everything goes well in that trial on whichever episode shows up in the future.

Oh, and another thing, since Black Manta is replacing Ocean-Master (who's oddly been disgraced for unknown reasons), is he filling in his former position in The Light?

Thanks for taking the time to read this posting.

Greg responds...

1. It was not your imagination.

2. I'm not sure what you're asking - unless you answered your own question.

Absolutely loved this episode! I was AWSOME!!! I especially loved the interaction between Clark and Conner; when he called him "little brother" I couldn't have been more happy!! I was all AAAWWWWWWWWWWWWW! ^_~

Also Blue Beetle doesn't fail to bring a chuckle to me with everyone constantly thinking that he's talking to himself...

Question regarding him though; I know this series is different considering that this is another Earth, but in the comics the scarab was against causing physical harm to living things, even almost getting Jamie killed sometimes. Yet in "Alienated" it sounds like the scarab wanted to vaporise the Krolotaian.

1. So is this scarab different in this way?

Also I noticed a young African-American boy with dreadlocks in the Hall of Justice looking at what I guess were a pair of Cheshire's katanas?

2. Was this a young Virgil Hawkins?

One of the many things that I love about this series is that it's like a "where's Waldo" of DC comic book characters.

Keep up the good work! Hope you get a season 3! I'd love to see this show continue past this season.

Greg responds...

1. Apparently.

I am a big fan of your work, in particular Gargoyles, Spectacular Spider-Man and Young Justice, and as an aspiring writer, your technique of plotting, use of foreshadowing and Chekov's Guns are a big influence on me.

Here are a couple of questions:
1. What is your approach to plotting a series?
2. And who are your influences as a writer?

To end this off, I would like to thank you for all of your excellent work in every field you have participated in, and I hope to see further projects from you in the future.

Greg, DC should let you do a Justice League series based on the New 52. I like the way you write and have a healthy respect for all characters and development of them feels more authentic than anything I saw even in the JL/U series. Anyway, just one question: You guys were permitted to continue with Season 2 : Invasion around the beginning of Season 1 I think. So if you hadn't been allowed a Season 2, would Season 1 with a different, finite ending? And once you were granted with S2, did you have to change a lot of plans?

HI GREG!

I heard down the grapevine you're a fan of Joss Whedon.

1.) Have you gotten to see the Avengers film yet?

2.a) If so, did you draw any inspiration from it, seeing as it's in the same "super-hero ensemble" genre you write (so well) for?

2.b) What modern works (be they film, television, literature, art, or not at all) do you draw inspiration from? Or just like?

3.) Over your career, you're written generally high-concept stories. Now more than ever, it seems like high-concept stuff has entered the mainstream (aliens, super-heroes and giant transforming robots running around everywhere). Since everyone's playing in the same sandbox artistically, does that make it more difficult to come up with original ideas? Without subverting or straight-up parodying the genre you're writing in?

4.) How do u rite so gudd? What would you recommend to new, ambitious writers, to help us learn to write with confidence and voice and stuff?

5.) Your decision to skip ahead 5 years (in YJ) shocked me, upset me and piqued my interest. I've never seen a show jump so much time, so I'm very excited to see how you all bridge the two season together. How did you let the studio powers-that-be let you take such a big narrative risk? Was it a big struggle?

Thanks for (presumably) taking the time to read and answer my questions. I love that Ask Greg makes it so easy to reach out to an artist I admire, whose work I respect. I'm the biggest fan ever of everything you've ever done, yadda yadda more accolades, etc. But really, you are an inspiration.

Greg responds...

1. Yes.

2a. We were WAY done by the time I'd seen the movie.

2b. Check out the "INFLUENCES" archive here at ASK GREG.

3. I'm not sure you're defining "High Concept" correctly. I think you mean "genre" has entered the mainstream. In any case, I just don't think in those terms. I'm just trying to tell good stories.

4. READ the classics. WRITE a lot. Proofread scrupulously. Get yourself VERY educated. Read newspapers. Etc. Or check the ASK GREG archives for a more complete answer.

5. No struggle. Everyone loved the idea.

Hi There Greg!!
Here is my question.
I'm guessing that the reason why you guys put WW's age into the 80s was to emphasize
the fact that she's immortal, which was a great move.
I know that Superman is in his 30s on your show, but i've read and seen in multiple portrayals of Superman (like Kingdom Come, DCAU), that while he's not immortal, he has a much, much longer lifespan than normal humans.
Was the reason why you chose not to give him a advanced age, was to emphasize the fact
that inside, he's more human than alien?

Greg responds...

I'm not confirming or denying that Superman has a longer lifespan. Nor am I confirming or denying that Wonder Woman is immortal.

In any case, your premise regarding Wonder Woman is incorrect. She's older because she first came to "Man's World" during World War II.

Thanks for all the work you and your colleagues put into such a great series!

I was curious if this universe has a system for dealing with the property damage that comes with the existence super powered heroes and villains, it's always something I end up thinking about watching animated series.

In terms of..
a. Is the league expected to help the general public repair neighborhoods and cities?
b. Is money privately and publically budgeted for expected damages in high risk cities? (The typical home areas of all the different heroes.)
c. Has it ever become an image/PR problem for the league? Or does the status quo put lives before property and accept it as an inconvenience/blame the bad guys?

Very excited to see where Invasion is going. :) Unexpected but interesting twist.

Greg responds...

a. "Expected"? That depends on who we're talking about. But I think they do help when they can.

b. Perhaps.

c. Mostly the latter, but things ebb and flow.

I have the feeling there are entire industries on Earth-16 (insurance, certainly) dedicated to this stuff. In fact, I'll make up one such on the spot: LexSure, a division of LexCorp.

Hello Greg Weisman, thank you for this interesting opportunity. I'm a big fan of Young Justice and it's great to see another great DC show around. I'm sorry to say this is the first show by you that I've watched (I should fix that). Snappy writing, fun undercurrent of mystery, and from what I understand is a staple of your shows, not assuming your fans are incapable of following an ongoing plot line.

I love the fight scenes in the show. Very fluid animation; and I enjoy in particular when the "normals" get to cut loose and drop some martial arts on each other. I also find it fun when Superboy gets to utterly wail on people.

Anyways, I have a question that has been plaguing me in recent years. I'm not sure if the answer varies from show to show but here it is. How much say do the writers get in the crafting of the action scenes? Do you guys lay down some guidelines for what must happen in a fight or do you ultimately leave it up to the animators and/or artists?

Well, there's my question that quickly devolved into a multi-question, I'm sorry. But, please, keep the awesome coming man! I hope this show keeps on keepin' on! Six seasons and a movie!

Greg responds...

Every series is different. On YJ - and most of the shows I've produced - I make sure that the script spells out the action in real detail - in part to attempt to assure that we're not winding up with an episode that's too long or too short. Having said that, I then am happy to have our board artists, directors and my fellow producer (on YJ that's Brandon Vietti) go to town and PLUS the action and visuals. But I do get approvals on all this to make sure we're staying on point with our story and not doing stuff that's out of character or off-tone for our series. Then you have the timers and, of course, the animators contributing too.

4. Were there any other laws like this that affected superheroes or superhumans?

5. Who passed and replealed this law?

I honestly don't know what you're referring to here. A "regrastion act"? I mean I realize "regrastion" is a typo, but I can't figure out what it's a typo for. So I can't answer any of your questions.

I've got some questions about Iago, Desdemona, and Othello.

1. Was Othello's flashback in "Legion" real? Why was Desdemona so upset?

2. Do you plan to do your comic that goes more into Iago, Desdemona, and Othello? I'd love to see more of their story!

3. Since Coldstone flies with rocket power, as do Coldfire and Coldsteel, would they ever run out of fuel? What powers them?

4. Did Iago really love Desdemona, or does he just want her because she's taken?

Greg responds...

1. Wow, you're really testing my memory. I think it was based on "real". Desdemona, as I recall, was upset because Othello believed Iago when he accused Desdemona of having an affair with Goliath.

2. There are no current plans for more comics, though I'd jump at the chance if it was offered. And, certainly, we'd have more on the ColdTrio.

3. Fair question, but I haven't given much thought to it, I'm afraid.

4. I'll leave that to your interpretation.

First let me say i really enjoyed the first season of young justice and couldn't wait to see the second season of young Justice!!But i wouldn't be honest if i didn't say that i was surprised and shocked at the changes that were made, the time jump of five years, the focus changing from the seven members from the first season and the big shock, Miss Martian and Superboy breaking up!!

Even those i could see that coming not because they weren't a good couple. A lot of things have turned out to be the same as the first young justice comic book series, you changed the way they get there, plus it seems everybody wants superboy to be with wondergirl like in the comics. As for me, i like Miss Martian and Superboy as a couple and hope they get back together in the future but that just me!! That being said, i did enjoy the first two episodes from season two! My Questions,

1.How tall is Miss Martian in her true form?
2.Did Miss Martian have anything do with Superman finally accepting Superboy?? She seemed to know he was coming!!I guess what i'm asking is did she talking to him.

Greg responds...

1. Pretty tall.

2. She was facing Superman and saw that he was heading toward Superboy. So she made herself scarce, so the two of them could talk. For more on the Superman/Superboy relationship - including what role M'gann might have played in it, check out our Young Justice companion comic (issues 20 (on sale now) through 25). This is a major subplot of the story.

In the comics, Bumblebee could not use her suit to shrink, nor did she have a relationship with the Atom, but in Young Justice she can shrink and is the Atom's sidekick/lab partner/student something (as of my asking this, only Earthlings has aired). These two traits wouldn't happened to be derived from another bee-themed superheroine owned by a certain other comic company, would they?

Greg responds...

Our show was NOT the first time Bumblebee shrunk. We got it from existing sources. So you'd have to ask the creators of those sources if Wasp was an influence on them. We are - as far as I know - the first to make Ray Palmer her mentor, but that mostly fits in with the dynamic of our series, and has nothing to do with Marvel's Wasp, who was in a romantic relationship with Hank Pym, not a mentor/protegee relationship.

I was quite suprised with the implication that Delilah might take Malibu on as her mate, as his mental development would in line with a child right?

Could there be somewhat sinister Demona-eque reason for Delilah remaining with Malibu and the other clones? You've mentioned, or at the very least it's on the wiki that she's the natural leader of the clones given her education. Does Delilah has Demona's urge for power and leadership? It would seem that Malibu would be a far more passive mate than Thailog and no threat to her attaining leadership of their clan. Or am I perhaps judging her too harshly?

Greg responds...

No. Malibu lacks education. There's nothing wrong with his mind. Which renders the rest of your question moot.

I was looking up the Marvel Gargoyles comic. If you wanted to use to use any of those characters are they considered marvel characters or Gargoyle characters? It's probably a non issue but I am curious. Venus seems like such an obvious character to deserve a parody, although Delilah probably already fills that role.

Greg responds...

I'm not really in the business of parodying Gargoyles' characters. (That's really more of an Edmund Tsabard thing, and even that guy went out of business.)

I don't know what the legalities are, but I'm not to interested in importing non-canon characters into the mix.

Hey Greg,

I know a lot of people consider Gargoyles to be an anti-Disney show due to its dark tone, but I think it actually has a lot of similarities. Both Gargoyles and other Disney films adapt mythology and famous stories in their own ways, while featuring strong emotions and conflicts(okay, those might be a bit general).

My question is, did Disney storytelling have an influence on the making of Gargoyles, and the eventual integration of different mythologies?

Greg responds...

I'm sure it did, since I grew up on Disney movies. But we weren't consciously trying to either DO DISNEY or NOT DO DISNEY. We were just doing GARGOYLES.

Hey Greg,

You mentioned that you received a list of pretty much every teen hero in the DC Universe, from which you and the rest of the creative staff picked the show's line-up. Did you ever, upon learning about a character, think "Wow, what a stinker! This guy is crud. Yeah, we're not using him/her." I'm NOT asking you to name specific characters obviously, but did you ever have that reaction at some point in the process?

Greg responds...

No, that's not what I 'mentioned'. I didn't 'receive' a list. I put the list together myself.

I'm making a big point of this, because I see this happen all the time. I write something, however innocuous. And then like a child's game of telephone it moves through the fandom - on one board or another - and soon enough people are posting (with TREMENDOUS CONFIDENCE, mind you) that they know X is going to happen because "GREG SAID SO." When in fact, I never did. (Heck, sometimes I said literally the opposite.) Trust me, I see this over and over and over again. Sometimes, it's amusing, sometimes annoying, sometimes infuriating.

So I think it behooves us all to STICK TO THE FACTS and to KEEP THE FACTS STRAIGHT.

Now, back to your actual question: there are obviously some characters that are more interesting to me than others. Sometimes because I'm more familiar with them. Sometimes because they suit our needs. Sometimes because they're just flat out cool. And there are always going to be others - in a universe as big as DC's - that don't grab me as much. But there's honestly not one character on our teen hero list that I'd rule out absolutely. As I've said before, if we can make Professor Ojo kinda cool, there's little I'd be afraid to take on with this crew of talented folks on YJ.

Wow! I was watching Young Justice: Invasion episode two and I must say, that was awesome!!!! But what caught me off guard, was when Adom Strange was talking about Alice and wonderland characters, such as the jaberwock and the bandersnatch. (sorry if I misspelled the names) I find it funny how he used that as a distraction. :) Why is it that many DC Universe characters are affiliated with Alice and Wonderland? (Characters such as Artemis and Adam Strange)

Greg responds...

Um... probably my fault. I have a fondness for the works of Lewis Carroll. Not on the level of my Shakespeare obsession, but I'm a fan.

On the other hand, Nicole Dubuc wrote this script, and I honestly can't remember if the Jabberwock stuff was her idea or mine.

Icon was identified as a type of alien called a Terminan. Beyond that, nothing else is known about him on Earth-16. I wish to ask more about him, but knowing how sensitive your updated guidelines are, I’ll just ask some simple stuff.

a. If Icon has a secret identity, what name is he called by?
b. Being that he is a Terminan, I suspect that Icon must have quite a longevity, but how old is he exactly?
c. Since he currently lives on Earth, what is Icon’s given age under the guise of his secret identity and according to Earth-16’s U.S. government records?
d. What was Icon's purpose for coming to Earth in the first place, assuming there WAS one?
e. In regards to Icon's voice actor, who is well-known in the Final Destination franchise, why was he specifically chosen for this role?

Greg responds...

Icon was not identified as a "Terminan" on our television series. So you don't even know that much about him on Earth-16.

a. Augustus Freeman.

b. Who said he's a "Terminan"?

c. I don't know.

d. Assumes facts not in evidence.

e. I've always admired Tony Todd's voice. But the truth is, voice director Jamie Thomason and I were having lunch at Taste Chicago in Burbank, and we saw him there. That reminded me how I'd always wanted to cast him in something. Then when Icon came up, he seemed perfect. Timing is everything.

K. As much as I loathe Season 2...
I have to say/ask:

1. Some of you love Season 2. Awesome. Good for you. Some of us hate it. Loving the new season doesn't give you the right to tell everyone else to "get over" anything, keep their opinions "to themselves" or to not post their feelings here. It's not your board. It's Greg's. Some negative reactions have been "approved". That tell you anything? It should. Yours is not the only acceptable opinion in the world or in YJ fandom (former or otherwise).

2. Liking/missing the relationship aspect of season 1 (and asking what happened?) does not make someone a "shipper". Stereotypes are just that. I moved out of my parents' house when I was 16. Got tattooed. Got into fights. Lived on the streets. Pulled myself up by my bootstraps, so to speak. I now have a good life. Have always had an active "intimate" life and have decent social skills. But? I LIKE COMIC BOOK MYTHOLOGY. See? Not a "geek" or "fanboy", etc. So much for being able to pigeonhole people based on what they like. Relationships are part of the story. Like costumes, to a degree. If Robin started wearing clown shoes, a ball-gag and a pirate hat, somebody might express their displeasure. Does that make them a "'stumer"? No. This isn't the "Big Bang Theory", so let's not entertain these insipid stereotypes.

3. WHY DO YOU PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW HOW OLD CHARACTERS ARE!?!? Every other question is "how old is Alfred?" "how old is Sphere?" "what is Batgirl's hat size?" Does this really matter... to anyone, on any level? Does not knowing Blue Beetle's exact age, Teekl's high school locker combination or Hawkgirl's bra size really keep you awake at night? If you enjoy season 2, just watch it, enjoy the ride and stop sweating the small stuff! Some of us are backside hurt over the time skip and quit watching after season 1! You're lucky if you're not one of us! Just be happy and enjoy the show.

Greg responds...

1. So you came onto MY board to tell others off? Fun times.

2. I really think you're posting this stuff in the wrong place.

3. So, you want the right to ask and/or comment on whatever YOU want to ask and/or comment about, but it bothers you that other people are doing the same? People have different interests. How does that take skin off your back?

Look, I'm sorry if you feel 'backside hurt', but you posted this after - at most - the second episode of the season. We didn't ditch out on relationships, even vaguely. You just lacked, what's the word I'm looking for? Oh, yeah. ANYTHING RESEMBLING PATIENCE. And I think your somewhat defensive, not to mention hypocritical post here demonstrates that.

Having said all that, I'm basically shrugging here. There's no law that says you have to like ANYTHING, let alone Young Justice: Invasion. But the exact same creative team worked on both seasons, and care deeply about all the characters. If you liked Season One enough to care this much about it, you might have given us a little trust and taken the chance that maybe, just maybe, we had a plan, and the characters you loved and the relationships that help define them, would not be left out of the mix. Just a thought.

Dear Greg,

Watched Earthlings today, very nice episode. First off, I gotta say I like Adam Strange and Beast Boy, you did great with Gar! I think I like him more in this than on Teen Titans. And I like you answering some questions about Megan & Connor, while bringing up more. And damn, Megan lobotomized that one! Nice. Now onto a question I didn't see in the queu;
Why did Adam Strange (or yourself) choose the Jabberwock poem? I heard that and went "Whaa??"
Awesome episode, keep it up!
PS-Got the YJ free comic book day issue. Nice!

Greg responds...

It seemed to fit the situation on multiple levels. Provided dialogue that was nonsense (to some degree) in ANY language, epitomized the feeling that Adam had that he was down the rabbit hole or through the looking glass to Wonderland, etc.

For what it's worth: I'm sorry the majority of your fans are too emotionally invested in YJ to realise that the very thing they love is something you give them. And that AskGreg is a privilege... not a platform to express a lack of gratitude and sense!
1. I'm writing the plot for a comic, and I've hit writer's block. Do you have any suggestions as to how to overcome it?
2. I mostly write on inspiration, as that's when I can create the best stories. When not inspired how do you continue to work on a writing project?
3. What type of people do you bounce ideas off of or have read over your stuff?

Greg responds...

1. Write anything. Market lists. Daily Journals. Whatever. Just get back in the habit of writing. Focus off the problem that blocked you for a bit though. The answer may come to you in the shower or something.

2. The characters tend to tell me what happens next.

3. My partners on any given project. (I rarely work in a vacuum.) Kevin Hopps, whom I've worked with for years and years now, is probably the best sounding board I've ever had.

It's creepy and insidious what she does and I am thinking, Conner's instincts are leading him the right direction because she feels dangerous to me. This ability to invade minds...it bugs me.

I don't think as well, her being a shape shifter justifies her being with Conner as said by Alana. Dude needs to move on...no, cross that. He needs to allow himself to grow and experience the world. He is 5 year old kid. Kudos on Conner's emotional/psychological growth too. He seems less angry too and more in control.

And as for Lagoon Boy, why is he already slated as the "jerk"? He looks like a fish and acts no different to any boisterous teenager. This was the same thing said about Wally. I like underdogs. I feel sorry for him in a way. Anyway, I can't wait to see what the JL got up to in the 16 hours they were off world!!! Great, suspenseful, intelligent writing!!! And gorgeous crisp animation!

Thanks.

Hi Greg - Thanks for answering our questions.

I love Wonder Girl in Young Justice. She's awesome!! I think shes my favorite character now!!
But I was wondering about her strength?
Because Superboy is the product of Superman, (and he's stronger than everyone!!!)
Does that make Wonder Girl second strongest in the Team after Superboy?

from

Greg responds...

Yes. And a sorcery-powered puffer-mode Lagoon Boy is going to give her a run for her money too. But she's young. Give her time.

I have a question about Gargoyle genetics and cloning. Apologies if this makes your head hurt, it's made mine hurt.
In Marvel comics, when they cloned X-23 they used just Wolverine's X chromosomes as the Y sample was damaged and a male clone wasn't viable.

I was looking up reptiles, as Gargoyles as I understand it are closer to reptiles than mammals. In reptile genetics it's the females(ZW) that have two different chromosomes not males(ZZ). So if Sevarius had a sample of say Angela, but only the Z was viable would he'd still be able to create a male clone of her, right? Females clones for Gargoyles would be the trickier of the two?

Greg responds...

Gargoyles are NOT closer to reptiles than mammals. They are GARGATES. So your entire question is pretty much moot.

Hey Greg,
i have absolutly fallen in love with Young Justice. Lex Luthor has always been my favorite DC Character and I love the way he is portrayed on your show. So I have a couple of Lex centric questions.
1) In the Young Justice universe is LexCorp one of the world's leading scientific organizations/companies? Similar to Wayne Enterprises and Star Labs
2) In Agendas Lex states "I'm the new chairman of the board for Project Cadmus, was that just to gain Superboy's trust or does the Light consider him the head of that particular project?
3) Again one more Lex type question, was Lex and the Light involved with the founding of Cadmus or did they just take over an existing organization?

Greg responds...

1. We think of Star Labs, differently, but yes, it's similar - theoretically - to Wayne Enterprises.

2. He's definitely the head. It was the word "new" that was bologna.

3. They founded it.

I posted questions up here before that you answered, so thanks for answering them. Loving season 2 so far, the new characters seem fun and I hope the older charaters get some of the spotlight.
I only really have 2 questions so far, both relating to Miss martian.
1.) so, I didn't really get the design change until ep 2. is the reason for her change of appearance because she looked like Beast boys mom, and she changed her appearance so he wouldn't feel like she was trying to replace her. btw, love their relationship.
2.) She acted really dark. was that darkness the reason superboy broke up with her, a result of the break up, or just a new attitude she developed after 5 years as a superhero and seeing what most villans will do.
Really liking her character. I never disliked meg, but she was probably my least favorite in season 1, she didn't grow on me till failsafe. Keep up the good work greg, and thanks for giving us this series....MY LIFE NOW HAS MEANING.
ps. loved mae as wondergirl <3
unrelated to the show, did you watch avatar the last airbender, and if so then did you cast her because you liked her in it?

Greg responds...

1. I'm going to leave this to viewer interpretation.

2. Ditto, though by now you should have enough info to make an informed interpretation.

3. Thanks... but if YJ is what gives your life meaning...

Beast Boy Fan writes...

I just saw episode 2 of season two that explained a little about Beast Boy, Superboy, and Miss Martian; and I have to say I did like this episode more than episode 1. The one thing I am curious about is Beast Boys appearance. I really liked the way Beast Boy was portrayed in the show Teen Titans, an easy going young teen who is a bit of a jokester but is a sensitive person to his friends, and from what I have seen so far you are continuing that very well. I will however say that when I first saw his appearance, prior to episode 1 airing, it was a little off putting, since he mostly resembled a humanoid chimp; but after I saw him animated the appearance didn't bother me as much. However, when I saw episode 2 and I saw the scene when he changes back into his "human form", albeit with green hair and skin; it made me wonder it maybe his Beast Boy "form" was really a shape shifted form that he just stays in similar to M'gann's green martian form. It could be a way of of him escaping the fact that in his normal human form he couldn't do anything but in his humanoid chimp form he is free to be himself again; similar to how M'gann doesn't roam around as a white martian. I was just wondering if this is true. My reason may be my own I just wanted to know if he decides to stay in a permanent shape-shifted form similar to how Miss Martian stays in hers.

Also on a side note, I hear rumors about upcoming heroes that will be added to the show, besides the ones that are already confirmed, and I believe Raven is one of them, though I may be wrong. I hope that she can fit in well with this universe and still has a relationship, somewhat, with Beast Boy. No response it needed for this, I would just love to see the whole Raven Beat Boy relationship again.

Greg responds...

For the record, we're NOT continuing anything from the Teen Titans television series. Since we're all operating off the same source material, there's bound to be elements in common in our portrayals. But that's it. To be clear, I'm not claiming any superiority. Just clarifying that YJ is it's own... Beast.

Beast Boy's monkey-boy form is a choice - but I'm not going to go into how CONSCIOUS a choice it is. I'll leave that to the viewers' interpretation.

Can you edit the site so there are different sections for questions? One for "Gargoyles", another for "Young Justice", another for "Spectacular Spiderman", another for "Young Justice: Invasion" and a final one for "Other questions"?

Like that, you could answer the questions in a more organized manner. Plus, you could answer the types of questions you want to answer whenever you want (i.e. You're sick of YJ questions, so you'll start answering Spiderman ones)

Overall, I think you should implement this or a similar system so the archives and unanswered questions can be easier to navigate for you, for the mods and for the fans.

Greg responds...

The archives are ALREADY broken up exactly that wayr. What other 'organized manner' is required? First come/first serve seems fair to me. And I don't have any particular preference as to which show I'm answering about.

Basically, I am not having any navigation problems. Neither are the moderators. And if you've spent even five minutes looking at the site, neither would you or any other fan. Navigation was never the issue.

I don't know. You'd have to have retroactively isolated them to know. They definitely seem more 'at one' - and thus less dependent on language.

Mr. Greg Weisman,

On this posting, there will be no questions. However, it seems only fair that I’d tell you something that I feel you may want to know. You may recall from at least two postings that I telling you about the post-Flashpoint DC multiverse. My suspicions were correct; DC Comics appeared to have cleaned the entire DC multiverse and are starting fresh. Here’s what I do know thus far and wish to share with you:

THE NEW DC MULTIVERSE THUS FAR (Post-Flashpoint):
a. First, we have our mainstream DC universe (aka. DCnU), but we still don’t know if its designation still remains as New Earth/Earth-0.

b. We have Earth-23, which was introduced in Action Comics #9. The Superman of this Earth seems to be modeled after our current President. His Kryptonian name is Kalel (and that’s how it’s spelled within the comic), while his human name is Calvin Ellis. I’d like to tell you other things I found out about this Earth, but I not that good at explaining it in great detail. Also, other parallel Earths were shown in that comic, but unfortunately there were no designations shown.

c. The last one is the re-imagined Earth-2, which is introduced in the new title, “Earth 2.” Just like the first Justice League story arc when the relaunch started, the first issue took place five years in the past. Apokolips is the threat once again, but here, Steppenwolf, and not Darkseid, is leading the invasion. Earth-2’s Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman die stopping the invasion, while the Supergirl and Robin of Earth-2 (who become Power Girl and Huntress as will be shown in “Worlds’ Finest”) follow an unknown person through a Boom Tube and end up stranded in the mainstream universe (at which in this point in time the events of the first arc of the relaunched “Action Comics” was taking place). Also, we get see the new younger versions of Alan Scott, Jay Garrick, and Al Pratt before they became the heroes they are supposed to be.

This now leaves the place of at least two pre-Flashpoint parallel Earths within this new DC Multiverse in question (or at least, in my mind, it does):

a. Earth-16 is the first one. While this world was introduced with existing information post-Infinite Crisis, this world was never touched upon again until you “rebooted” it for the setting for “Young Justice.” I might say that was the best decision you’ve ever made. You may recall from an earlier posting that I asked if you or your co-workers have ever confirmed with the higher-ups at DC Comics on whether or not your interpretation of Earth-16 still exist within the new DC multiverse. I’ll probably find out your response to that particular posting when it comes.

b. Earth-1 is the second one. This parallel Earth is the setting for DC: Earth One graphic novels. It’s hard to describe, but what I can say is that it’s sort of like the equivalent of Marvel Comics’ Ultimate Marvel universe (by way of being introduced to new readers, among other things). I think J. Michael Straczynski was the guy who started this parallel DC universe.

Hope you didn’t mine me telling you all this. I just felt that you needed to know what’s been going on in the new DC multiverse.

Thanks for taking the time to read this posting!

Greg responds...

Thanks. I haven't always had time to keep current. None of this effects episodes of YJ, which was all locked long ago.

Hi Greg

As someone who is interested in writing episodic stories, I was wondering if you could share your approach on how you write a season for a series like YJ. I remember seeing an image on Brandon Vietti's blog where he had post-it's on a board mapping out all of season 1.

1. Do you start with the season's overall story first, eg. "The Light wants to take control of the Justice League and Red Arrow is the mole who will help them" and then do you just come up with plot points/events that move the story forward and scatter them across episodes?

2. Do you come up character development separately or in tandum with the story? I ask because in my own writing I have growth of some characters mapped out but have struggled to come up with plots to tie that growth in with the overall story arc.

3. If you're able to recall, would you be able to share some of the content on the post-it's from a particular YJ episode?

4. And what are your thoughts on "filler story episodes". My interpretation was "Secrets" and "Performance" were filler, in that they didn't drive the overall season story forward, but did have character development. Do you think it's important in writing for a series to give the audience a break from the story arc at regular intervals?

Thanks for your time Greg on sharing your writing process.

Greg responds...

1. Yes, more or less. (For example, I'm not sure Red Arrow was the FIRST thing we came up with, as your example implies, but it was pretty early on.)

2. In tandom. Though we have a pretty clear idea of who all the leads are when we start.

3. Okay, first, not post-its. INDEX CARDS. Second, that board came down to make room for the Season Two board some time ago. And when I moved offices, even the Season Two board came down. That stuff's all boxed at the moment. But I do have issues #20-25 up on the board now. And since issue #20 has seen print, I'm willing to spoil THAT one here. Now the comic is slightly different. Particularly within this truly jammed-packed six-parter, my index cards literally broke things down page-by-page, and everything is color-coded to make it easier for me to refer to where a particular sub-plot left off:

I'll transcribe it all here, exactly how it's written on the index cards:

PAGE TWENTY - GREEN - Br Ship - Orb-One sends First Leader Ks' go ahead to Br. Reveal Br. Logo, Title, Credits.

4. There's no such thing as filler episodes on any series I've ever done. There ARE change of pace stories, but even they wind up playing into the larger tapestry. For example, one could easily view "Targets" as a change of pace, focusing as it does on Red Arrow, Sportsmaster and Cheshire with just a little Aqualad thrown in at the end, but obviously, it wound up being crucial to the season as a whole. Neither "Secrets" nor "Performance" were filler in our minds. Both advanced the overall story, the arcs of multiple characters, the dynamics between those characters AND held clues to what was still to come. They clearly drove the season forward. Having said all that, I do think it helps to have 'breathers' in there, where some plotlines and/or characters are rested, to allow time for growth, to build suspence, to let off-screen events take place, etc., etc.

Hey Greg, I remember from one of your answers about Artemis that you’d discuss the question on why you made the creative choices with Artemis AFTER season 1 was over. And since I can’t find any question similar to this I’ll get this ball rolling on my 2nd favorite character on the show (Wally’s the first):
1.)What inspired you and your team to take Artemis Crock who was pretty much a villain in the comics and revamp her to being a hero and pretty much filling Arrowette’s place on The Team?
2.)How did you come up with the idea of making Chesire her sister, in this canon since she wasn’t in the comics?
3.)At what age did Sportsmaster start training her daughters?
4.)You can just respond yes or no to this question, but was there a specific incident that caused Artemis to NOT want to follow in her families villainous footsteps and walk a more heroic path?

Greg responds...

1. We liked her parentage and the opportunities that presented in terms of her having secrets to keep and lies to tell.

2. Seemed to fit. Cheshire - in the comics - has always been trying to figure out who her father was. Why not Sportsmaster? And again, it created a very interesting relationship and dynamic between her and Artemis. Plus we knew we wanted to add ethnic diversity to the Team, so by folding the Eurasian Cheshire into the family, it made it natural to make Artemis half-Vietnamese, half-Caucasian, as well.

3. Probably from birth.

4. Yes and no.

Greg responds...

I really only had two lists that I actually TYPED UP, one for teen heroes and one for possible Light members or allies. But keep in mind, I also have literally decades of DC Comics trivia in my head, plus two complete iterations of WHO'S WHO on my shelves, a DC encyclopedia and e-mail access to the incomparable John Wells, DC expert extraordinaire! Plus, you know, my contacts at DC: Ivan Cohen (formerly), Geoff Johns, Mike Carlin and Sean Ryan - all of whom were VERY helpful. Plus most of the staff -and half the cast - are bigtime geeks also.

Of course, AFTER we went into production, I started new lists of characters that we were actually using. But those are broken down by episode, not by hero and villain.

1. I'm not UNhappy with how it turned out.

2. I believe so. That is, we knew we were going to use Lagoon Boy. We didn't make a final decision on Yuri until just before we began auditions for our Season Two cast. That's not meant as a reflection on Yuri AT ALL. We simply didn't discuss who would be playing what until then, at which point Jamie Thomason and Brandon Vietti and I sat down to figure out which characters we'd need to hold auditions for, and which we were already good with, which of course included Yuri.
